Revue de presse

"This introductory guide to music mixing provides theoretical and practical information on the technical aspects of sound engineering, as well as discussion of the creative aspects of the art. Beginning with a section on concepts and principles, the bulk of the work focuses on specific tools and their uses, while a final section provides walk-throughs of simple mixing projects based on music genres. Chapters include numerous illustrations and an emphasis on technical versus creative lessons is stressed throughout."--Reference and Research Book News

"Praise for the first edition: Absolutely first rate. The standard of writing by Roey Izhaki, as well as the examples on the CD are just superb."--Mark Mynett, Senior Lecturer, Department of Engineering & Technology, School of Computing & Engineering, University of Huddersfield

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Note from Focal Press 6 décembre 2011
Par Anais Wheeler - Publié sur Amazon.com

I'm the editor of this title at Focal Press.

As other reviewers have mentioned, there is NO DVD with the new edition of Roey Izhaki's Mixing Audio. The audio examples are available via a companion website, which requires a login using a hint from the book. The website is found at mixingaudiodvd dot com. If you have issues with the website, you can contact us at Focal Press through our website (focalpress dot com, click on "Contact Us" at the bottom of the page).

I'm sorry there has been confusion about the DVD. Because it's impossible to provide discs with e-books, Focal Press is now providing companion materials via website, wherever possible. We are trying to streamline this process to our greatest ability.

Roey Izhaki has written a great new edition of his already excellent book Mixing Audio, and provided even more audio clips.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic BOOK (for goodness' sake, stop whining about the old DVD) 5 décembre 2011
Par Mark Pfaff - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
The first edition of Mixing Audio was fantastic reference for mixing music, and the 2nd edition makes a number of notable improvements. The replacement of the DVD with downloadable content is a much better choice for a number of reasons (reducing costs, more content, ease of updates, etc.) so I have no understanding of why the previous two reviewers here are taking away so many stars merely because a physical DVD wasn't included. If they ordered it online from Amazon, they've got access to the internet and can download it (yeah, it may take a while, but do it once and get on with life). Sorry, just a little frustrated that short-sighted folks are maligning a fine text for such ridiculous reasons.

In any case, if you're looking for a strong reference book for mixing music, this is one of the best. If you're looking for something more comprehensive than just music production (e.g. mixing for post-production, broadcast, etc.) then this may not be the book for you. This is specifically about music, and perhaps the title could have been altered a bit to reflect that. Mixing music has its own set of constraints that don't apply well to mixing ALL audio. That said, Roey does a great job of getting down to the critical operational details of mixing (the listening examples are very valuable here), which is invaluable. Too many books repeat canned recipes for how to process guitar or drums, without describing the relevant variables (both creative and technical) that the budding engineer needs to learn to listen for. For example, I have seen so many students utterly baffled by all those knobs on a compressor, paralyzed by the fact that they may know that attack and release, set wrong, may lead to something called "pumping and breathing" and yet don't know why it happens, what to listen for, or how to remedy it. This book provides one of the only sources I've seen for the level of step-by-step detail to develop their ears and their conceptual understanding of the process. Highly recommended, especially for the price (compare to other widely used audio production books, like Alten's Audio in Media for 3x as much).

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Not for the beginner but PACKED with good info 28 février 2012

First things first: I'm a hobbyist musician, recording music at home for my own pleasure. My equipment is modest at best (and that's being generous) and my skills as a producer, mixer and engineer are wanting. I record stuff for fun; that's it.

This book is not aimed at people like myself.

So does this book have anything to offer a guy like me?

YOU BET. While author Roey Izhaki sets his sites higher than slacker amateurs recording bedroom demos for fun, that doesn't mean those of us who fit the description won't pick up on a wealth of valuable tips, information, and data to help us create better recordings.

Mixing Audio is essentially a textbook. It's arranged that way. Designed that way. And best used that way. It's darn near exhaustive in its completeness, delving deeply into audio theory, technology, and more.

Izhaki seems to have a broad understanding of music, too, recognizing that you're not going to record that three-piece punk band in the same way you would a six-piece jazz outfit or the pop vocalist. That means this book will have use no matter the kind of music you specialize in, and will help you understand when and how to switch approaches depending on what you're recording.

The author also understands that these days, people are recording on a VAST array of software and equipment. Therefore, his lessons take many approaches into account. So do the charts/illustrations, which cover many popular software suites.

Keep in mind, a lot of this material goes right over my head, delving into highly technical detail that is great for a pro or semi-pro but is maybe too high-end for the casual hobbyist.

But saying that the book is TOO comprehensive would be an absurd complaint, wouldn't it?

Even if we disregard the high-end instruction here, the book is jam-packed with useful insight into concepts and theory that will have you producing better audio.

I'd say that for anyone ready to dive into the world of mixing audio, this book is an essential purchase.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Exceptionally Good Book! 31 décembre 2011
Par Andrew Woodard - Publié sur Amazon.com

I have been involved with audio recording in one fashion or another since I was in my early teens (and I'm 54 as of this writing). I have made a career in Electronics Engineering and Technical Support (LOTS of hardware!) as well as being a semi-professional musician and Audio/Recording Engineer, so I'll step forward as a qualified expert in the field to review this book.

I bought this book not for myself but for my 16-year old son, now a musician and apprentice Audio & Recording Engineer, himself. I was looking for a straight-forward and comprehensive primer to the science of recording, and this book is a perfect match.

Not only is the information accurate and concise but it is presented in an order that one would normally learn from the ground up without the "hopping and skipping" that can be common in technical texts.

Moreover, the revised edition stays up to date on trends in software-based recording systems as well as hardware-based systems more well known to us older folk.

The requisite knowledge is also covered thoroughly as exampled by the extensive section on EQ (equalization), arguably the most critical aspect of recording. Other areas are, likewise, covered in much detail.

I am always very hesitant to give anything a top score, and I 'm not claiming this book will give you a degree in Audio Recording Engineering, but for the core of the science it is an exceptionally good book.

Whatever you choose, read well and read often. Enjoy!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I can't imagine a better resource 24 décembre 2011

Another Focal Press direct hit on a science/technology (and in this case mixed with art) topic.

High quality (heavy, glossy, well illustrated) publication. Mixing is discussed from music appreciation and theory all the way through to specifics - like all aspects of equipment, board operation, useful "tricks", and even reference data like frequency and time delay charts. Very well organized, accessible and learnable. This 2nd edition does not use a companion DVD, but rather refers the user to a companion website. No glitches there.

I don't even own a decent board yet, but am interested in mixing as a way to participate in music, while having little musical talent myself. This book has it all and I am encouraged. To master these contents (and I have so far to go), will be to master the art and science of mixing (in my estimation).

I can't imagine a better resource for a novice to start their trek. Likewise there seems to be much here that an experienced mixer can readily apply as well.
