Présentation de l'éditeur

Montessori at Home or School: How to Teach Grace and Courtesy is a bit like "Montessori meets Miss Manners." In Montessori, grace and courtesy is seen as an important part of a child’s education and an important part of meeting a child’s inner needs. The Montessori method provides a framework that can effectively be used with one child or a group of children.

Part I talks about grace and courtesy for preschoolers and elementary-age children. Suggestions are given to help parents and teachers feel comfortable teaching grace and courtesy. Part II gives rules of etiquette in many situations for preschoolers through age 12.

Sections include "Using the Montessori Method to Teach Grace and Courtesy," "Why Use the Montessori Method?" "The Preschool Child," "The Elementary-Age Child," "Introductions," "Greetings and Farewells," "Conversations," "Saying 'Please,' 'Thank You,' and 'You're Welcome,'" "Saying 'Excuse Me' and ‘I'm Sorry,'" "Coping with Problems in Public," "Bathroom Manners," "Cleaning up after Yourself," "Having Friends Visit," “Being a Guest at Someone's House," "Table Manners," "Telephone Manners," "Letter Writing," "Games and Sports," and "Showing Respect."

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great primer on teaching manners and appropriate behavior for any parent / teacher 12 janvier 2014

I would recommend this book to any parent / teacher. As a homeschooling mother of 3, I found this book beneficial as a refresher for myself on manners(!) but also helpful for teaching my children because it breaks each concept down into discrete steps. To test how my kids would receive the information, I read a couple of brief parts aloud to my them, and they have been talking about it since! In the future, I plan to take a topic per week and review information, then practice and review the topic during the week. Topics include:
Introductions,
Greetings and Farewells
Conversations
Please, Thank you and You're welcome,
Excuse me and I'm Sorry
Coughing etc in public
Bathroom Manners
Cleaning up after yourself
Having Friends Visit
Being a Guest
Table Manners
Phone Manners
Letter Writing
Games and Sports
Showing Respect
I don't know any parents who haven't struggled with at least one of these issues with their kids. In our family, it is amazing to me how many things I realize are problems AFTER they occur, many of which could have been addressed by explaining the task in advance to my children using the step by step approach outlined in this book. I anticipate that being proactive about these topics will pay dividends and I am excited about that!! Deb supports the benefits of her approach via a brief description of her research in a daycare center in the UK. I see this book as a real gem that I will reference often throughout the years. I wish I had a hard copy to keep on the shelf.

Superb book for any parent or teacher responsible for helping a child learn to get along in this world successfully. Virtually every social situation is covered, along with many excellent tips on how to teach children just about anything. A book you will refer to for years as your child grows and encounters new situations. Destined to be a go-to work on this important topic in child rearing. Highly recommended.

It is a good book, and it has helped many.

However, I hoped to have many examples/methods on teaching and reminding children to use grace and courtesy. Much of the "How to" part of the book simply speaks of the Montessori philosophy, and not so much applying it to this topic. Her "Research" part of the book spoke of her experience teaching in a classroom, but was more statistical and less practically applicable. More than half the book is etiquette, which is wonderful if I had more examples on how to teach them. 3 out of 5 stars. I had really, really hoped to give this book 5.

My favorite quote in the book:
"Dr. Montessori realized a young child has a deep sense of personal dignity. We can crush that sense by reprimanding . . . without teaching a child first. The sense can be protected and enhanced through exercises of grace and courtesy."

Ages 2 and 1/2 through 6 are the perfect time to emphasize the teaching of grace and courtesy. The author says, "During those years the child has a special receptivity to the learning of manners." The child will enjoy learning about manners, as well.

This book is an excellent resource for parents and teachers to read, and later have on hand to use prior to different social events. What to do when meeting people, gift exchanges, formal dinners, casual dinners, having overnight visitors, and everything a child experiences is covered. Everyone is more comfortable knowing these manners! Even adults!

I really like the elementary section can be read by the students themselves, as it is written to them. Those parts can also be read by adults, so the wording is right there to use with children.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic Resource for Montessori and Special Needs 26 décembre 2013
Par Lisa Nolan - Publié sur Amazon.com
I am a 3 to 6 and 6 to 9 Montessori trained teacher and a Montessori mom to a special needs child. Deb Chitwood's Montessori book on how to teach "social grace and courtesy" to children is comprehensive and invaluable! She covers a wide range of subjects and areas of need with practical activities and lessons and easy-to-follow directions. I wish I had this book last spring when I began helping my special needs son at home learn more in depth about manners, politeness, and the consideration of others! (Better late than never!) I highly recommend this book to parents, educators, homeschool, Montessori, and special needs.
