A Piglet's Adventures in the Sonoran Desert10 juin 2013

Jean Craighead George's Thirteen Moons is a wonderful series of books for children in the middle grades. Each book deals with the life of a particular kind of animal in his natural environment during a given month of the year. In this book the environment is the desert, specifically the Sonoran Desert of Arizona; the wild pigs are peccaries; and the month is July, the hottest and driest month of the year in this desert. The book follows the adventures of a piglet who was separated from the clan of peccaries when they bolted to escape a thunderstorm. Along with him, the reader travels down the arroyos and past the saguaros and meets the creatures of the desert, including a rattlesnake, lizards, a Gila woodpecker, a pack rat, and an elf owl. The book is illustrated with ten spectacular full-page paintings by Paul Mirocha which beautifully show the desert and its inhabitants. This 46-page book has something to offer to anyone, and I would definitely recommend it.
