Présentation de l'éditeur

London, 1859

Engineer Winifred "Wink" Hadrian has been in love with Inspector Liam McCullough for years, but is beginning to lose hope when he swears to be a lifelong bachelor. Faced with a proposal from a Knight of the Round Table and one of her closest friends, Wink reluctantly agrees to consider him instead.

Because of his dark werewolf past, Liam tries to keep his distance, but can't say no when Wink asks him to help find her friend's missing son. They soon discover that London's poorest are disappearing at an alarming rate, after encounters with mysterious "mechanical" men. Even more alarming is the connection the missing people may have with a conspiracy against the Queen.

Fighting against time—and their escalating feelings for each other—Wink and Liam must work together to find the missing people and save the monarchy before it's too late...

4.0 étoiles sur 5 I really enjoy this series 10 février 2013

I hate writing book reviews, as you know if you've read my other reviews, because I find it extremely difficult to avoid giving away plot without giving away how much I liked the book (or vice versa)...

However! It's a steampunky romance with dynamic, likeable characters who are sometimes too noble, but I'd rather have too nobel than a scoundrel as the main character...I like liking my main characters.

It's a pretty short book (I was able to finish it in an afternoon, but I'm a very fast reader...) but enjoyable nonetheless. If you like themes of Victoriana, steampunk, romance, light magic, engineering fantasy, etc, you'll probably love this book.

I got this book from the publisher and netgalley for an honest review. Winifred "Wink" Hadrian is a smart woman who knows what she wants. What she wants is Inspector Liam McCullough a family friend. The problem is because he had a bad past and believes he may carry bad genes like his father. Being a werewolf is bad enough but he doesn't want to take he chance that he may turn bad on Wink. His solution is to set her up with one of the Knights of the Round Table. The problem is people are disappearing and they have to work together together to solve the mystery. They will have to try to stay safe and fight their attraction to one another at the same time.

Wink is a girl who loves to event things and isn't the normal woman 1859. She is stubborn knows what she wants and will do anything to save her friends and the ones she loves. Liam has a dark past but it just makes you want him more. I love him and all the things he will do to fight his attraction to Wink. There is so many great characters in this book that I can not wait to read more about.

I haven't read the other books in this series but that didn't face me one bit. I wasn't lost and really enjoyed this book. I will pick the others up to read more of this exciting world. This book combines steampunk and paranormal together in an amazing blend. You have werewolves, vampires and so much more. The inventions are amazing and i could picture them in my head. You are kept guessing to the end who is behind the disappearing people, what is happening to them and what will Wink and Liam do. These two belong together you can tell and you really want to shake them sometimes to get them to see what you as you are reading can clearly see. I can't wait to get the rest of this series to see the other characters stories. The author does a great job in writing this book.

Moonlight and Mechanicals
Gaslight Chronicles Book Four
By Cindy Spencer Pape

Wink Hadrian does not like being in "high society" she would much rather stay in her garage and tinker with her inventions. She is in love with a werewolf, Liam McCullough and has been for years however after she is proposed to by a dear friend and Liam pronounces that he will never marry she gives up hope and looks toward the other man instead. When Wink goes to visit the woman who took her in when she was a child back in Wapping and finds out that her son has disappeared. She quickly turns to Liam who works with the police. But Liam soon discovers that people are disappearing at an alarming rate all of Wapping.

There is so much going on in this book, first you have the steam punk aspect which is amazing and reinforced by Wink who inventions are truly fascinating. Then you have Vampires and Werewolves Oh my!, Liam is actually a werewolf and we get to see that side of things with a firsthand perspective when he goes through the change. Now we also have a couple of side story lines such as the world is dying out, wish there was more on that, everywhere that anyone goes they must wear a filter over their nose and mouths because the air is so unstable, really wish there had been more on that. This is an amazing book and Cindy Spencer Pape has done a remarkable job. I have yet to read any of the other books in this series but the author brought to life Wink and all of her siblings so spectacularly that I am dying to find out what will happen next.
I was sent a free copy of this book for an honest review.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Werewolf falls for engineer 27 juillet 2013
Par Vilia - Publié sur Amazon.com

Wink is all grown up and while she is an engineer who has sound ideas on the uses of electricity, everyone seems to want her to get married. Her suitor Connor is a dear friend but there is no spark between them. The man she really wants, Liam, claims he doesn't want her. Wink is thrown together with Liam as they try to find what happened to the scores of people and dogs that have recently gone missing in London and how to protect the Queen from a villainous plot.

I liked Wink in many ways as she is independent and has a way with machines. She refuses to be pigeonholed as either a society chit or a blue stocking and makes her own path. Obviously her adopted parents' wealth and her revised background have made this easier. Wink was originally fairly well to do but when her parents died, she ended up thieving on the street. Since she has been rescued from poverty, she has been given room to develop in whatever areas she wants. At times Wink's views were just plain odd, especially when she described her first sexual experience. I thought it was tragic rather than an amusing anecdote. A dab hand with both a rapier and a spanner, Wink is quite unusual and she needs an unconventional husband to suit her.

Liam might be a well-respected Inspector at Scotland Yard but he's a bit dense in the romance stakes. He suffers from `I love you but I'm not worthy of you so I'm going to throw you at some other bloke and wallow in self-pity' syndrome. He's afraid his werewolf genes will mean that he will be cruel to whoever he marries, just like his father was to his mother. His repeated attempts to throw Connor and Wink together are a bit heavy handed. I'm still not entirely sure what made him give in as he had been resisting Wink for years. I was left wondering though whether it was all worth it given Wink had to work so hard to seduce him.

The novel's strength is the way steampunk has been incorporated in and around a romance. We get passing references to all manner of mechanical devices and the mechanical men plot was genuinely interesting. I do think the cast of thousands could have been reduced as many just popped in to say hello, revealed a clue or recapped past events and then disappeared. This spoiled the pace a bit and drew attention away from both the romance and the mystery.

This was a fairly enjoyable read and there are enough recaps that you don't have to read the others in the series if you don't want to.

The protagonist is Winifred "Wink" Hadrian, 24-year-old adopted daughter of the Hadrian family. The Hadrians, a motley crew of orphans and stepchildren, are part of the Order of the Knights of the Round, descendants of King Arthur's legendary group. The Order fights threats to England, whether those threats are supernatural or technological. Wink makes numerous mentions of having fought vampires in the past, but only one shows up in the story and is quickly dispatched.

Getting back on track--Wink has always been in love with Liam McCullough, Scotland Yard inspector and reluctant werewolf. Because of his bestial nature and the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father (and far worse beast), he is firmly convinced he would make a horrible husband and father, and so does his best to see Wink married off to eliminate the temptation to bed her. Meanwhile, the heroes investigate a series of bizarre and seemingly random disappearances and whether or not they have anything to do with a group of angry young men supposedly seeking revolution in England.

Moonlight and Mechanicals is a good story featuring compelling and likable characters, and excellent formatting and editing. While most of the book deals with Wink and Liam trying to come to terms with their feelings for one another, when they finally do the story really picks up steam (pun intended). A word of warning, however: This one's not for kids. It contains the most detailed sex scenes I've ever read, so parents be warned. If, however, you're not bashful about this sort of thing, this book is well worth a read.
