Format: CD

HASH(0x9b3e2c00) étoiles sur 5 ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CD'S 23 mars 2001
Par MOVIE MAVEN - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is truly one of the most beautiful CD's I own. I first heard of it about 15 years ago, before I owned a CD player: I read in a British classical music magazine that Moravec's playing of Chopin was inspired and that his playing of Debussy was reason enough to buy a disc player. The writer called CD's "silver cookies" and this disc was right at the top of his list of ten favorites. I have listened over and over and still continue to marvel at the subtleties of Moravec's pianism. Gorgeous and delicate, but these are not wispy interpretations which melt like cotton candy. Moravec plays with strength. I love the Chopin CD and think it honestly compares favorably with Rubenstein, but it is the Debussy interpretations that have stayed with me and that I come back to time and time again for a 45 minute vacation from life in New York City. The price listed above is unbeatable...about 1/2 of what I paid. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

It irked the French of my Dad's generation that the greatest interpreter of Debussy piano music was Walter Gieseking - not exactly a Frenchman.
I don't know if it bothers the French today that the mantle has passed to a Czech. If it does, they should get past it, and just be grateful that anyone can play this beautifully.
The Chopin Mazurkas are I think as close to Moravec's heart as they were to the composer. He often offers them as encores at recitals, and invariably reduces the audience to hushed rapture.
All music lovers should snap up any Moravec album they come across - especially if it includes a Chopin Mazurka.

HASH(0x9bbe40a8) étoiles sur 5 Superior performance, great recording, and a bargain price. 26 septembre 1999

The wonderful thing about being a student of classical music is the joy that comes from finding a wonderful recording that few people know of on a "budget" label and at a bargain price. This CD is one such prize. This all digital recording features absolutely brilliant performances and interpretations of Debussy. Many well known classical pianists seem to be in an effort to "do it all." Moravec has always been much more limited in his repertiore, specializing in fewer areas that he performs beautifully. The performances on this CD set are my favorite Debussy recordings, and the price simply cannot be beat.

I stumbled across this album several years ago and couldn't believe my good fortune. I've listened to recorded piano music for a number of years, and while I would by no means consider myself to have any special expertise, I consistently find Mr. Moravec to be the single most communicative pianist in my experience. This set, along with all of his recordings reissued on VAI that I've been able to hear, are simply wonderful.

HASH(0x9bbe4228) étoiles sur 5 Distinguished Debussy and exquisite Chopin miniatures 11 août 2013
Par I. Giles - Publié sur Amazon.com

This pair of well recorded discs were made in 1982 and 1983 and have never been out of the catalogues since then. They contain a particularly fine set of the Debussy piano pieces plus an exquisite disc of Chopin miniatures that would normally be played as possible encores and which thus make an unusual single disc selection. The Debussy is still available as a single disc but the Chopin is only available in this coupling.

The Debussy pieces are three sets of triptychs , a seemingly favourite compositional grouping of the composer plus one prelude. The two sets of three Images (books 1 and 2) are of disparate pieces which have no obvious reason to be linked together as collections. The Estampes are similarly made up of three unrelated musical pictures. All these pieces suit Moravec's fastidious style of playing which employs an endlessly varied range of touch coupled with an inwardly communicative style that suggests an degree of an improvisatory thought. This is partly achieved through a flexible approach to strict tempo which nevertheless has a tightly controlled internal discipline. It is this apparently conflicting range of pianistic and interpretive skills that makes Moravec one of the most interesting and compelling pianists to listen to.

The recording of this disc is exemplary and presents piano sound of considerable fidelity.

The Chopin disc is cut at a slightly lower level and its generally more subdued content make it worth raising the replay volume level slightly compared to the Debussy disc. The content of this disc is typical of Moravec's Chopin discs in so far as it is made up of small groups of miniatures and with an emphasis on dance forms. In this case we hear 5 Mazurkas followed by 3 Waltzes then 2 Polonaises. What is unusual about this disc is the absence of any one major work such as a sonata etc. Nevertheless, it is also a feature of Moravec's playing to make even small pieces such as these seem far bigger and more eventful that they usually appear in the hands of other pianists. The final result is one of almost profound satisfaction.

I would therefore suggest that this pair of discs continue to be worthy of serious consideration as a potential purchase despite the almost inevitable problem of doubling recorded repertoire in many collections.
