Not even going to trade wait anymore 25 juin 2014

Volume 7 is the point where I jump off the wild (yet increasingly tame) ride of Morning Glories Academy. I was absolutely enthralled by the first few collections; I felt invested in these characters and shared theories with my friends. Each subsequent TPB, however, has grown more and more tedious. The later trades have been quick reads due to lack of depth and mystery. This collection was by far the fastest read, feeling empty and pointless.

Unlike past serialized comic books (Y, 100 Bullets, Preacher, Chew, etc.), Spencer isn't writing for the trade. The four issues compiled in this collection don't comprise a story arc or offer any sense of closure. Each issue checks in with a character, offers very slight forward momentum, then ends with a twist. Spencer set up such a compelling world, which is why it is disappointing to see the book tread water for the past two trades. Even though the book adds new characters, the world still feels small since there is no sinewy tissue connecting any of the threads. Spencer doesn't offer many answers, but he also isn't presenting any new mysteries or plot developments. The story has remained in the exact same place since the end of Woodrun, and at $11 a pop, it isn't worth the time or money to hope that the next trade will advance the plot.

While clean and stylistically pleasing, Eisma's art detracts from the book as all of his characters appear to be the same age. Whether it be teenage Ike or his father Abraham, their faces all look to be around 20 years old. A major plot point involves a teenage character dying her hair black and then looking exactly like one of the teachers. This development, while clever, is indicative of the generic look of the entire book. As the cast grows larger, it is hard to keep track and differentiate the characters when they all look so similar.

Despite the rating of one star, I did not vehemently dislike this trade. I was not filled with anger while reading it, nor was I disappointed when I put it down. I'm now apathetic towards the series as a whole.

This is still a very captivating story, even as I'm beginning to lose my connection to many of the characters and plot threads. 2 juillet 2014

Collects Morning Glories issues #35-38

I'm still really liking this story, but I'm starting to feel overwhelmed by the overabundance of mysteries and characters. I used to read every volume over again from the beginning in preparation for reading a new volume, but I had to give that up. Volume 7 was probably the biggest disappointment in the series so far in the sense that it was the shortest volume (only 4 issues long) and there weren't any huge, surprising moments. There's just a ton of stuff happening that I don't quite understand. Plus, all of the things I don't understand are happening to characters that I'm starting to lose track of. Who is who? I'm not really sure. This volume opened with a story about Fortunato, and I couldn't even remember if we had met him before or if he was a new character.

My opening paragraph may have you asking yourself why I gave it a 5-star review. Here's the thing...this is a 100-issue story. I've read through Issue #38. That means that I'm not even half-way through yet. I've appreciated Nick Spencer's style of storytelling since Issue #1, and I'm sticking with him until the end. This is still a very captivating story, even as I'm beginning to lose my connection to many of the characters and plot threads.

This volume was a very quick read, and it was the first time I bought a volume without immediately reading it. I'm starting to lose interest, but not so much so that I'm going to give up on it.

Getting Confusing 30 juin 2014

I still like this series a lot, but it's honestly getting pretty confusing with all the new characters and new plot points and time travel etc. It's hard to remember who is who sometimes, and I feel like we haven't really gotten any answers but have gotten A LOT of new questions.
