Description de l'ouvrage

23 juillet 2013
Welcome back to the world of mice in the third collected volume of the Eisner Award-winning and critically acclaimed fantasy comic series, Mouse Guard. This beautifully illustrated prequel to the two previous volumes spins the tale of wise oldfur and longtime Mouse Guard member Celanawe, as he fulfills the promise made to young Lieam to detail the day his paw first touched the legendary weapon, the Black Axe. The arrival of distant kin takes Celanawe on an adventure that will carry him across the sea to uncharted waters and lands, all while unraveling the legend of Farrer, the blacksmith who forged the mythical weapon.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great addition to the Mouse Guard series - but DON'T READ THE PREFACE! 10 octobre 2013

This is a great book - Petersen's art and storytelling remain top-notch - and it would definitely deserve 5 stars based on the story, art, and the physical product itself.

But do yourself a favor and do not read the preface before you've read the book - it spoilers the ENTIRE STORY! It gives away every twist and surprising moment. (It also reads like its written by a five year old, and contains no interesting content or insight, basically extending to "I like this book," but that's neither here nor there.)

I was lucky enough to be warned by friends, but I know people who were really disappointed to have the story spoilered like that. Do yourself two favors: 1) buy this book, because it's great, and 2) don't read the preface.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An origin tail ... er ... tale 23 juillet 2013
Par Alt - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is an origin story of sorts, an explanation of how Celanawe came to be known as The Black Axe. Celanawe, a Guard Mouse of the early Middle Ages, is assigned to Em, a mouse elder. They undertake a quest: to find the Black Axe. A ferret king has it, and to claim it, Celanawe must slay a fox.

There's a real (or unreal) charm to this story. The quest story is a familiar form, but this one is well done. Of course, the classic literary conflict, mouse against fox, is always the foundation for a good tail ... er ... tale. Once the quest is complete, the story becomes one of human interest ... er, mouse interest ... as the story recasts one of the characters in a tragic light.

The finely detailed drawings of mice wielding tools and weapons, sailing ships and flying on the backs of birds, make it easy to believe in the fantasy world that Mouse Guard creates. It's a world worth revisiting.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wonderful Art And Writing 18 juillet 2013
Par Eoghann Irving - Publié sur Amazon.com

The Black Axe is the third volume of David Petersen's wonderful Mouse Guard series. Petersen both writes and illustrates the books.

The format is somewhat unusual for comic books in that it is a square 8"x8" format. The artwork inside is exquisitely detailed and the coloring subtle. It is an absolute work of art.

The story of The Black Axe is a prequel to the first two volumes and I would recommend starting at the beginning with The Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 otherwise the introduction will likely prove a little confusing.
However the core story of the book absolutely stands on it's own and I had little trouble finding my bearings and enjoying the events both heroic and at times sad.

In this world mice are intelligent and tool users, as are weasels (and similar animals). The Mouse Guard exist to defend the kingdom which the mice have carved out for themselves.

The story focuses on a small number of characters but each of them is skillfully drawn both in words and pictures. I found myself drawn deeply into this world which seemed to have a depth and life far beyond the elements I was seeing.

I know graphic novels are not to everyone's taste, but I really can't praise this highly enough. It has a depth beyond the average anthropomorphic animal story and in many ways feels more like a historical adventure than a fantasy one.

Buy the first two volumes and then get this one.

I've enjoyed the Mouse Guard series and have read Volume one and Volume two.

Volume three uses a storytelling font that is nearly impossible to read -- it really slows down the reading. Maybe that's the point. The story is wonderful and the art is amazing, but the text is very hard to decipher.

My kids love this book.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another amazing and charming tale 31 janvier 2014

Petersen's story telling is noble and fierce just like his characters. This story is rich in character. It is a good knight tale with characters that come close to your heart. The art is nothing short of amazing.

The book itself is well made with a few extras that weren't in the comics. This is a must have for Mouse Guard fans and a great buy for anyone else. I'd suggest reading Fall and Winter 1152 prior because there are some minor spoilers in the end.
