The cocktail hour 10 janvier 2012
Par wogan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
This is an improved Mr. Boston Bartenders Guide. It is the usual, small, red hardbound copy the fits on, in or near the bar, but yet the print is large enough to see.
It has an interesting introduction, telling about Leo Cotton, the `father' of the guide and also about the present state of cocktail consumption. There are about 150 new recipes, none using premixes. Some ways to make various syrups are included, attempting to make the cocktails more natural and flavorful. This is an enhancement, especially for cocktail connoisseurs.

The book is really a complete guide to making good cocktails and how you can have extensive bartending techniques. Tips are included on how to be a professional/good bartender. Equipment lists and glassware with tiny silhouettes are listed, also what the well-stocked bar should have; mixing, chilling, and serving as well as charts giving measures are incorporated in the pages.
Instructions to make classic cocktails, with some information about each, then drinks made with: brandy, rum, tequila, vodka, whiskies, cordials and liqueurs, shooters, frozen drinks, hot, eggnogs and punches, wine and beer in mixed drinks and nonalcoholic drinks are all described. It would be a pretty obscure drink, not to be recorded here.
Resources with web sites, a glossary and an index complete the multitude of information included in this compact book.

It ain't your Grandfathers Mr Boston 18 janvier 2014

I have a 61st ed, from 1981, which is a much thinner version. In the older edition, all the recipes are organized alphabetically by title. A cross-reference in the back ties liquor to drink. Quite frankly, many of the formulas in the old one were different only by the ratios of ingredients. This version has many updated formulations. It organizes the drinks by liquors, with handy colored thumb tabs to identify each section. Drink variants are now listed together, with a wider range of ingredients, and a short description of their sources. It also has many color pictures of the drinks. This newer version is more useful and provides more resource for the budding mixologist.

I met Mr. Pogash in NY a couple of years back at a cocktail presentation he did at writer's conference. I ordered this as soon as I got home and was not disappointed. I love the way it's organized by spirit, so I can just flip to the section I need if I am making gin based cocktails, vodka based cocktails, etc. It's also a very handsome book, which makes it easy to keep on display. This is such a staple for me, that it has its own spot on my bar.

Best source for classics, kindle version handy 15 mai 2013

I had a recent discussion with a friend, about the Mai Tai. We decided to whip up a batch of the original mixture, but had to wade through many shortcut recipes containing mixes or juices. I remembered that I used to have one of of these little red Mr. Boston books, as did my Dad, and just knew it would contain the information we needed. Unfortunately, we were not near home, and managed to dig up the earliest original version, and assembled our ingredients. They turned out to be delicious, and when I decided later to check my Mr Boston guide, I could not find it on my shelf. I decided it would be handier on my kindle anyway, and bought that version. When I looked up the Mai Tai, it had the whole drink story, with the original ingredients, and a non brand specific version that would not require interpretation today (simple syrup instead of rock candy syrup, general description of best type of rum to use). Certainly trendy guides can have their place, but this is a great basic reference.

A gem for the home bar 1 janvier 2013

In the past few years, we've upgraded our home bar and finally got some "real" glasses and bar tools. With those changes, I found myself wanting to try more classic cocktails -- but unsure of where to start or what to make besides a Martini or a Manhattan. We got another bar book, but it was full of so many "new" drinks, didn't contain instructions on how to make some drinks we'd heard about and wanted to try, and -- most disturbingly -- instructed us to buy things like "Collins Mix."

This book is perfect for the home bar. The book is like having an unpretentious bartender friend come over to your house and give you mini lessons on what kind of bar equipment you need, how to stock your bar . . . and, most importantly, how to make drinks. By explaining the "nature" of different drinks, you get a feeling for why they work. Despite all the other useful and interesting info, the majority of the book is dedicated to drink recipes. None of them call for mixes -- there is a focus on using fresh lemon or lime juice, as well as instructions on how to make your own simple syrup. That said, you won't find a bunch of difficult or complex drinks that call for you to spend half an hour preparing ingredients like some of the newer fancy cocktail books appear. There are some newer recipes, but the book is mostly dedicated to classic drinks.

The size of perfect -- we can actually store it on top of the bar, but it would easily fit on a shelf or wherever you need it. The type is small but readable.

Overall, this book is a gem for the home bar.
