Présentation de l'éditeur

The year is 1811. Lady Cecily Seymour, travelling with her maid to stay with some relatives in Bath, comes across an intriguing young gentleman who is snowbound in an isolated wayside inn. It is the start of a heady romance through which both Cecily and Mr Forster discover some surprising secrets – secrets about other people, and secrets about themselves.
Note that although this novel forms the first of the three ‘Lord Barnham’ books, it can equally be enjoyed as an independent, stand-alone Regency romance.

Lizzie Church is an author to watch. She writes what are generally referred to as "traditional" Regencies, with well drawn characters and satisfying plots layered over the manners and morals of the time. What sets her work apart is the prose. Ms. Church is a writer - a real writer. There's no stumbling, no misused vocabulary, no forced pomposity or wooden dialogue. I think "Mr. Forster's Fortune" is her best work so far. A sample:

"I had hoped the mail would be more than adequate for a simple journey to Bath, but I find myself spectacularly wrong, as usual. And now, see where it's got us after all - the wretched guard riding off with the mailbag and leaving the rest of us stuck here like so many castaways in some God-forsaken inn." And so we are introduced to Mr. Robert Forster, caught in a snowstorm and observed from the shelter of her widow's veil by Lady Cecily Seymour. How and why their relationship develops, falls apart, and re-establishes itself is the subject of the novel.

My only regret is the length of Ms. Church's work. I do wish she could give me 300 pages to enjoy instead of 160.

If you enjoy fine writing, you won't be disappointed with this author's work.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Lovely Regency 14 avril 2013

This was a lovely, elegant regency mostly set in Bath. It was subtle and had such a lovely old-world air to the prose. The writing was flawless, I suppose some might compare it to Austen, it did have some similarities in tone and description. The ending was a little abrupt, it definitely could have used an epilogue, but other than that this was an excellent work. I liked the heroine. She reminded me of Elizabeth Bennett, a most proper young lady who had a mischievous streak. The Hero was a little harder to nail down, but I was sufficiently impressed with Cecily's descriptions of her feelings for him that I enjoyed him as well, but I would have liked to have visited with him for a bit more. I didn't mind not hearing about his thighs stretching his breeches near to bursting as so many other regency heroes are described, but I would have liked to know the exact color of his eyes, his age, and seen a little more of his general personality. The sister was a nice character, I would have liked to see her with at least a beau, but perhaps she gets her own story in time. This was a bittersweet regency, there was a lot of tragedy, especially on the Hero's side, but it ends as it should, if a little suddenly. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.

I had already read the novel, The Girl From Red Lion Square, which takes place seven years in the future. Going back in time with this story, we are able to catch a glimpse of how some of the main characters lived at an earlier time in their lives. I really liked the H/h and the supporting characters. If you like this novel, you should also read TGFRLS. The story flowed nicely, and all of the plot lines were resolved at the end, perhaps a little too abruptly. However, for those of us who have already read TGFRLS, we know what happens to the characters in the years to come anyway. The books can be read and enjoyed as stand alone novels. Very good Regency Period novel.

This quiet little Regency book takes a bit to get started. At first the heroine and hero both seem immature and shallow. I didn't like either of them very much and I was disgusted by the hero's behavior. Halfway through, the story changes and takes a more solemn tone. The story then describes a lot of the seedier aspects of Regency society as the plot moves forward. I found the story from that point on more interesting than the beginning. The characters show more depth and the plot is more interesting. It's different from the standard plots most authors follow but in a good way. The romance develops quickly, yet it's slow paced. It seems based on shallow pretenses but develops into a more once the characters get to know each other. It's a sweet, slow romance. There's nothing more than kisses.

I really liked the hero for the most part, except in the beginning and during the misunderstanding. The heroine is rather underdeveloped and I don't know really anything about her except that she's rich, pretty, sweet, and a bit lively. She longs for more than her circumscribed life but she seems to ignore that longing in favor of romance which I didn't like. I could see the romance being the basis for a longer novel or shortening the beginning and then making the story advance a few years before the h/h come together. I found the ending just a bit too rushed for my taste.

The author has done extensive research on the Regency era. The descriptions of Bath are excellent but sometimes the research shows up in a forced manner. There are constant references to the streets and where locations the characters are at any given moment, one major stand-out of a fashion trend that clearly comes from a cartoon of the period. I love research and period details and I liked the attention to detail but sometimes it was a bit too much.

My criticism with the story is largely with the writing. The story is told in a rather detached manner. The characters never really come to life nor are they memorable in any way. We're told how Cecily is feeling at any given moment and what she's thinking but it doesn't really show through in the story. The character interaction is bland and the dialogue pointless. I think the author was trying to write in the style of Jane Austen without mimicking it exactly, which I appreciate, but I found the writing style a bit too slow for bedtime reading. I liked the story though. It was free on Amazon the day I bought it so I was nervous about the quality but it was worth the time I spent reading it. The story is better than average and the writing quality is better in the authors more recent novels, she will definitely be one worth reading. I would recommend it to those who like Jane Austen and some of the slower Regency set novels.

Similar to Georgette Heyer and Candice Hern, NO sex, a TRUE Regency ROMANCE novel. I enjoyed it and am giving it top drawer rating!
