HASH(0x941e306c) étoiles sur 5 DVD contains 9 minutes more footage than the VHS version 12 octobre 2003
Par Un client - Publié sur
Format: DVD
I compared both VHS and DVD and they trimmed out tons of scenes here and there for a total of 9 minutes cut on the VHS version. why did they trim those before? Some of the cut scenes include Sara and Hogan traveling, and some are scenes like in the saloon, and in the hideout with the rebels.
Also the DVD picture shows much more from side to side and a lot more on the top and bottom compared to the VHS version fans of the movie have had to live with for years. The quality of the picture is fantastic. This is probably the best improvement over VHS I have seen.
They also changed the cover from the old VHS version! It still looks great on the DVD, but the old VHS version showed the Mexicans and French fighting! why did they remove that? This is an action type western movie. If you see the cover it almost looks like it might be a romance movie. They should not have changed the cover.
There are a few times when Hogan shoves Sister Sara over a wall or into a tree by placing his hand on her rear, and she emits a female 'oooh!' They removed all those sounds and replaced them with grunting. I guess they thought that was objectionable, but it's amusing the way it was and they should have left it alone. The menu also has this annoying music playing also. Why did they pick that music? They should have used some of the music from the movie. However, a great film and an excellent transfer to DVD.

HASH(0x941e34bc) étoiles sur 5 A masterpiece! 11 décembre 2007
Par Michelle - Publié sur
Format: DVD
Hogan (Clint Eastwood) an ex Civil War soldier is a drifter looking for not so easy but definitely shifty ways of making money. He runs into 3 men molesting a naked woman (Shirley MacLaine) in the desert. Defending the woman, he kills the men and discovers the woman he saved is a nun. Together they embark on a mission to help the Mexican rebel army blast a French fort on the 4th of July. Eastwood is in it for the money; Maclaine for humanistic reasons. The guns are blazing, the French are all over the place, and Eastwood and Maclaine are falling in love. There is only one problem: MacLaine is a nun... or isn't she?

Outstanding western with great action, witty repartee, wonderful characters, surprises and what not. If you haven't seen this classic by now, boy have you been missing...

HASH(0x941e34ec) étoiles sur 5 Entertaining Eastwood western receives a nice blu-ray transfer 5 avril 2014
Par Wayne Klein - Publié sur
Format: Blu-ray Achat vérifié
"Two Mules for Sister Sara" brings together two Hollywood icons--Clint Eastwood and Shriley MacLaine in an unusual western that is, essentially, "The African Queen" in the old west.

Eastwood plays Hogan a drifter who saves Sister Sara (MacLaine)from being raped by outlaws. In the process the duo become embroiled in the Mexican fight against the French. It seems that Sara has something that the French want as they continue to pursue her and Hogan.

Directed by Don Siegel with a marvelous score by Ennio Morricone "Two Mules for Sister Sara" marked Eastwood's second American western since becoming a star with the Sergio Leone films. Although the script has its flaws, "Two Mules" largely works because of the performances (particularly Eastwood who introduces a bit more of a comedic element to his performance here), Siegel's sharp direction and the score. The film features some beautiful photography.

The blu-ray looks exceptionally good with a crisp, sharp presentation that doesn't relay on edge enhancement to sharpen the image. Detail is strong throughout. This is the same transfer that was released last year in the UK so if you have that version, there isn't any improvements or differences here to note.

The film receives a nice looking transfer that is largely free of any sort of blemishes.

The audio sounds quite nice with a good mono 2.0 presentation of the original soundtrack that is faithful to the intent of the filmmakers. Dialog is clear for the most part and subtitles are included. There's some depth to the mono presentation here as well.

Sadly we don't get any special features. Given the stature of Eastwood and MacLaine one would expect that. Heck, I would expect it for director Don Siegel since he's a well regarded filmmaker who made a number of classic films ("Invasin of the Body Snatchers", "Dirty Harry")and was Eastwood's mentor as a director. We get a vintage trailer and that's all/.

"Two Mules for Sister Sara" is an entertaining western. I loved it as a kid and continue to enjoy it today (although I grew up on the pan and scan version this is the version I learned to appreciated when I later saw it at a revival house).

HASH(0x941e3444) étoiles sur 5 We make a good team 14 novembre 2004
Par Steven Hellerstedt - Publié sur
Format: DVD
In an inspired bit of casting, sexy and effervescent Shirley MacLaine is cast against tough and laconic Clint Eastwood. The result is a frothy little frontier romance that is two-thirds wonderful. The last third, when TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARA returns to its action roots and involves us in a long rebels versus the establishment battle scene, is more an intrusion than a culmination. I would have liked twenty more minutes of Eastwood-MacLaine and hang the rotten French colonial garrison.

This is a funny and straight-forward love story that bears comparison to the best teamings in action history; TWO MULES doesn't embarrass itself when set against any of the John Wayne-Maureen O'Hara films, which is about as high praise as I'm capable of.

My favorite element - throughout the movie MacLaine rides the smallest mount I've ever seen. The burro she's saddled to is shorter than many domestic dogs, although both rider and mount maintain as much dignity as the circumstance allows.

HASH(0x941e3924) étoiles sur 5 A classic Eastwood Western. 26 février 2000

I first saw this movie while I lived in Arizona in the late 1960's when I was a boy and the only thing I remembered then was the unforgetable soundtrack. Then a couple of years ago, I rented it and I enjoyed every bit of this movie. Clint Eastwood gives a humorous top notch performance as the drifting western mercenary who finally realizes he has a "heart", and Shirley MacLaine delivers excellently as a Nun who is not only running from the French Army but has a BIG secret. From the landscape of Northern Mexico/Arizona to the great acting and music, this is a movie to watch anytime and appreciate those westerns that only "The Man with No Name" can deliver! Two big thumbs up!
