HASH(0x98570e04) étoiles sur 5 Beautiful setting 24 août 2013

Format: Jeu Achat vérifié
First thing first, the product arrived in perfect condition and promptly. I was pretty excited to get my hands on it as I am a huge fan of Baldur's Gate and its lore. It's divided into three parts, a Campaign guide, the Adventure, and a custom DM screen.

Campaign guide: Holy cow, there is a lot of info in this book. Honestly it's almost too much info and I can foresee it being a tad overwhelming in a game but it really seems to have an answer for everything. There are a lot of maps and cutouts within the book so you really have something to show your players or help you describe the setting. The book really has a lot to say about some history and different factions within the city and honestly makes for a good read all on its own. My only real issue is what seems to be the lack of a foldout map of anything, but I think that's more due to how the adventure works.

Adventure: I'll be honest here in that I haven't read through the adventure in it's entirety. But from what I did read it sounds very open. If you're expecting to pick this up and run it that night I would say you probably don't want to do that. Similar to the campaign guide, there's a ton of info. And a lot going on. Unlike traditional adventures there's none of the "Bad guy reveals plans, good guys stop plans, fight bad guy" in this book. There's just a lot happening at once and I think the idea behind this module is to allow the players to have some freedom in choosing what is important to them to do. Depending on party makeup this could be difficult because sometimes when you have a neutral or evil party, they just don't care about things that don't have clear rewards or present dangers attached to them. The adventure is essentially a time table. There's a list of events that will happen with or without player involvement. It's essentially a giant DM railroad but one that allows the players to get on and get off where they please and ultimately they have the ability to change the outcome of the last event.

DM Screen: Guys. They need to make DM screens like this more often. The actually quality of the screen itself is a bit flimsy and thin but the content is amazing. First it's beautiful, I'll try to upload some pictures later, but what I love so much about this is the fact that it has all the important random things about Baldur's Gate listed on it. It has a table for naming shops, a shop functions table, some NPC names, and a map with 90 locations marked on it and color coded. You also have a list of manors, ranks within three of the various factions, and 40 street encounters. Those are pretty simple but it's nice to have something like that already there. For running this session or even spending a campaign in Baldur's Gate, this thing is really awesome.

Overall: Strangest part about this was that it's a setting with no stats. This is nice because it means that this is adaptable to any system. You can run it with whatever stats you want it to have, throw in your own monsters, do whatever you want. At the same time, it's a disadvantage because you won't have everything right off the bat. You'll want a few monster blocks and skill DC's ready for when you do start it up. All in all I'm very happy with this but if I find a glaring issue while running it, I'll make sure to come back and amend my review.

HASH(0x9857624c) étoiles sur 5 WotC brought the Hammer to the table! 9 septembre 2013

This product is a home run. I have to say I am not fan of 4e and do not like the direction D&D Next, but this product has renewed my faith in the D&D line and particularly the Forgotten Realms. This product is compatible with every edition of the rules (and for those willing to do a bit of work, Pathfinder as well). They include no monster or NPC statistics, leaving the game open to any edition you choose to run (a plus for all DMs).

I love the DM screen that comes with this product, as it has a full map of Baldur's Gate on Both sides, one for the DM and one for the Players. This makes the product exceptionally reusable. In addition, they've brought back all of the deities that died or were lost in 4e, restoring the Realms back to what my players know and love.

If WotC continues making multi-edition compatible products, such as this, I will continue purchasing from them. This module is worth every penny. WotC, Ed Greenwood, et. Al. Hit a home run here. If you're a Forgotten Realms fan, you should not pass up this module.

HASH(0x98576474) étoiles sur 5 Great Campaign! 19 octobre 2013

I love the way this is laid out. Instead of giving you full blocks of dialog or options that your players never seem to choose, it gives you strong motivations for all the NPCs and a great outline of the events that have happened. It's up to you as the DM to create the dialog based on that, apart from some basic introductory dialog that is provided.

This gives me a lot of leeway to ad lib the adventures for my players, especially since they love to go out of their way to do everything but what I plan for. If I get caught up at all, we just take a 5 minute break so I can re-read the motivations for the NPCs, the basic stage outline, and maybe a couple location or organization descriptions in the Campaign Guide.

And I love that there are no stat blocks included. You can get stat blocks for 3.5, 4e, or Next online (they give you the link), but it seems like the Next blocks are a little behind (that's what we play), so I've altered them a little. I'm also running this with a group of level 5 characters, so I keep the difficulty about the same if they split up, but up it a little if they stick together, and it works great.

So far, we've had way more RP than usual and a great time, even though we've only had a half-dozen or so fights over the first couple nights running the campaign. I've already pre-ordered the next Sundering Adventure!

Pros:
* DM screen makes it easy to visualize Baldur's Gate
* Players get a map on the other side of the screen
* Extremely easy to modify based on your group and level
* Baldur's Gate the video game is cannon!!! Makes it easy on me :)

Cons:
* No battle maps (we just use figures, pencils, etc to make our own areas and don't fret about distance, so not a big deal for us, but maybe for others)
* Protective sheath isn't very protective

HASH(0x9857636c) étoiles sur 5 Cool Adventure with Poor Production 23 septembre 2013

This adventure is well written, with intriguing scenarios and a compelling, interwoven plot. On top of that, it's ambitious spread of support across three editions of the game is nearly unprecedented and a fantastic step forward. That said, the production of the product itself is very lackluster. The booklets are printed without covers, nor do they have the cardstock folder that previous D&D adventures used to protect the booklets from ware. Plus, the lack of an accompanying creature statistics booklet is a major failing. A few additional pieces; hand-outs or even a physical "Baal's Favor" tracker board (a crucial element of the adventure's plot) would have served it well. The only upside in production is the Dungeon Master's Screen with a good arrangement of easily accessed information.

This is a first-rate adventure. The text is well-written and the maps are easy to read. The product comes with two booklets and a four-panel GM's screen. It is written for five newly-created first level characters.

Having said how awesome the adventure is, there is something I should mention. I don't think this would be a good adventure for a first-time GM to run. This adventure isn't site-based, like a dungeon. The adventure is event-based. Each encounter depends on how the PC's handled the encounter before it. There are three factions jockeying for position during the adventure, and a new GM might start to feel overwhelmed.
