Présentation de l'éditeur

A series of seemingly inexplicable deaths at Locke Abbey causes house guests to speculate that the sinister events have a supernatural cause, prompting William Cole to call on the services of renowned detectives to help solve the mysteries.

When Lady Thea Copley arrives with her detective father, Cole is immediately taken with her. He soon realises that she is not a typical lady, and that her beauty is only surpassed by the sharpness of her mind.

As they work together and expose the secrets and lies at the heart of his household, Cole is left reeling from the revelations. Can Thea overcome her past hurts to be his anchor, or will she hide behind her intellect, afraid to take a chance?

Lady Thea Copley is the now 24 year old daughter of Damaris and Nathanial Copley, whose story was told in "Her Saving Grace", a book I also loved. Thea and the hero of this story, William Cole, share many of the same attributes of Damaris and Nathanial in that first book. Like her mother, Thea is incredibly smart, has total recall of anything she's read and can read at lightening speed. Her knowledge and skills help her with working on cases with her detective father. Because society of that era does not appreciate or encourage those attributes in women, Thea has been emotionally hurt by men and society not able to accept a smart woman. Thea also is forthright and has difficulty understanding nuances in social situations and that has caused her to feel uncomfortable in gatherings with people she is unfamiliar with. William Cole is much like Thea's father in that he is a strong male character, but his male ego is not threatened by a female like Thea. He is intrigued with her and also patient and understanding of her fears and anxieties. There is also the aspect of a good murder/mystery to the story. Diehard fans of that particular genre might easily figure out who-done-it, but I felt like I was solving the case along with the detectives Thea and Nathanial. A very good (clean) romance with the murder/mystery. Catherine Winchester is now one of my favorite writers.

Thea is a smart woman with an idenic memory- after reading Romeo and Juliet only once, she can quote verbatim any line from the play. It is her smarts that Cole is hoping will help solve the murders that have recently taken place in his home. Cole and Thea quickly fall in over, and Thea is ecstastic that there is a man who doesn't feel threatened by her intelligence.

Honestly, I thought that the relationship between Thea and Cole progressed way too rapidly. Within two days they were declaring their love for each other and getting engaged.

Some things in this novel didn't make sense. If Thea is as smart as she seems to be, then she would have realized Cole's father was being poisoned much sooner than she did. In a house where two murders have already been commited, wouldn't poison be the first thing you'd consider when someone starts developing unusual symptoms? And to me it seemed pretty obvious who committed the murders. Also, as the book went on, Thea got more and more annoying. She constantly felt the need to defend herself and her intelligence. For instance, she got into an argument with the governess and basically told the governess she was unfit to teach because she only knew how to speak three languages whereas Thea could speak eight. No wonder no one liked Thea. She was often rude and pointing out individuals lack of knowledge. She kind of reminded me of Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory. She was one of those people that are so intelligent that they lack rudimentary social skills. By the end of the book, I was fairly annoyed with her character. I know she meant well, but I expected that by the end of the story, she would have grown a bit and learned how to deal better with others, but she didn't. It was kind of disappointing.

Overall, just an OK love story and OK mystery.

Thea is not a great beauty, but she has a sharp mind and can remember everything she reads. Her father is asked to come to Locke Abbey to sort out murders that on the surface appear to be supernatural in nature. Normally Thea's mother would accompany her husband but she had been injured in an accident.

Our hero, Cole, is the heir to the estate. His father has been suffering with bouts of illness and now seems to be in his last weeks of life. Cole's mother had died a few years ago and his father had remarried. The stepmother is a flirtatious and shallow woman. She has borne two little girls whom Cole is very fond of, though he questions whether they are his father's children.

There is a house full of guests when the murders occur, but it doesn't take the reader long to put the clues together. That wasn't a disappointment as far as I was concerned as I read romances for -- well romance. The lack of it was a disappointment for me.

There was an attraction between the main characters but it came off as tepid at best. He was respectful to the point of boring. She was book smart but came off as abrasive in social situations. Her intellect got in the way of my liking her, and I found it difficult to see what attracted the hero. Thea character was written as a strong, intelligent woman who believed in science, but she wasn't above jumping to conclusions.

The writing was a bit stiff and the conversations stilted.

I would have enjoyed seeing more heat between the two main characters. It certainly wouldn't have hurt the story.

I thoroughly loved reading this multi murder story. I enjoyed Thea's enthusiasm and intelligence. Cole seemed mesmerized by her knowledge and assertiveness. The story-line kept me reading all day long. I love historical romance novels and the fact that this was a mystery made it all that much more. I look forward to reading more of Catherine Winchester.

This wasn't too cliched, but fairly typical. The characters were interesting enough, but not overly so. I enjoyed the early forensics employed by the main character. The romance wasn't overwhelming, but restrained without being boring.
