Présentation de l'éditeur

When her boyfriend inherits an ancient vineyard in France, Maggie Newberry quits her job in Atlanta to accompany him for a year abroad. They settle in the tiny village of St-Buvard, but murder has gone long before them and follows close behind.
Murder a la Carte brings Atlanta copywriter and southern belle Maggie Newberry to the brink of two connected murders—both committed in her home—and both poised to threaten everything she holds dear. When Maggie agrees to move to France with her boyfriend—a French ex-confidence man who has just inherited a house and vineyard—she doesn’t expect her year of French market shopping and weekend trips to Paris to be interrupted by a vicious murder in her living room. Or that the bloody violence that occurred on their front doorstep sixty years earlier after the end of the Second World War might be connected. If you want to save the price of a ticket to the south of France this year, pick up Murder a la Carte instead. It will give you a delicious escape into the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of Provence—all tucked nicely within the framework of a tightly woven mystery that will keep you guessing until the very last page.

Just another annoying American whining their way round France. If I had been her boyfriend I would have given her the great heave ho. Full of errors both geographically and linguistically, if the 'heroine` doesn't seem to like her lot then she should shove off back to where she comes from. Full of implausible situations I wondered whether the author had ever been to France. Irritating beyond measure!

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Skip this book if you read French. 24 mai 2002

This over-long book is strong on atmosphere and weak--very weak--on writing and character development. Anyone who reads French will be amused (and annoyed) by the frequent errors, the result of authorial or editorial sloppiness ("pastiches" for "pastis," "comme" for "comment," and many, many others). Verb tenses are mangled, and incorrect accents are common ("créme" instead of "crème brulée, for example). Correcting the errors might be a good final examination for someone wishing to earn a degree in French! It's a sad commentary on the book's characters that the most endearing is the poodle puppy Petit Four.

Essestially the story line was cute however the language was so elementry it was pathetic. Also, as a French first language speaker, I would advise the author not to use bad French when speaking in the voice of a Frenchman. I needed to go to my osteopath, to get my jaw realligned after reading the series, from grinding my teeth. The characters were also very stereotipical. Although not an American I could not get my head around a college graduate, Maggie, being so dumb. Come on not being able to handle the language after living in the country for three years!! Why was she presented as so naive when she came from a rather sophesticated family? If a high school student handed in such a poorly written piece I would sit with her and offer some very serious editorial advice or she would have to settle for an F.

Ooh la la! What could be more romantic than spending a carefree, rent-free year in the South of France with a tall, hunky Frenchman who loves to cook? If you're Maggie Newberry, you might be hard pressed to find an answer to that question, despite the few inconveniences she discovers upon arriving in Provence to help boyfriend Laurent settle affairs with an inherited vineyard.
It's not enough that several locals are breathing down Laurent's neck and pressuring him to sell his land, but Maggie appears to have her own collection of detractors. Sneering Gaston LaSalle, the spawn of gypsy stock, has made harrassing Maggie a top priority, while local tart Babette (who, appropriately, works in the bakery) is hell-bent on seducing Laurent. It's a sure bet Maggie would tell them what to do with themselves...if only she knew enough French.
Oh, and did I mention the dead body found in the basement of Maggie's house on Thanksgiving? That the house was also the scene of a brutal multiple homicide committed fifty years ago which continues to haunt the village and her residents? Come to think of it, maybe Maggie could think of more romantic things.
If you're looking for something mysterious, a mystery with a French twist, consider a stop in Provence with Susan Kiernan-Lewis's Toujours Dead. Toujours follows Maggie through her adjustment to country living, her friendship with expatriates Grace and Windsor Van Sant, and ultimately the murder of a brash American opportunist which she believes is connected to the half-century-old massacre that happened on her front steps. Lewis paints a desirable picture of Provence and creates in her townsfolk an array of interesting characters one would hope to meet on a European vacation.
Especially Laurent. A gorgeous Frenchman who cooks? If anyone needs me, I'll be at Priceline.com.

I did not find it engaging at first, but once I got into it, I found it very entertaining. I especially liked the way she handled some people speaking French and some English.

I've noticed quite a few reviews of this book pointing out the murder of the French language so that makes 3 murder scenes but since I don't speak French I didn't have that distraction. I enjoyed reading this story, I read the first in the series quite awhile ago so it was a pleasant surprise recognizing the characters and continuing their story. I certainly wouldn't have been so blasé about being mauled and molested, that was weird, but I liked the descriptions of life in a foreign country with the language problems and different customs and getting to know the place and people before the actual murder takes place. I like the parallel murders, one old and one recent and the unfolding of each and how they intertwined. I have made note that there are several books in this series so I have something to look forward to, I like books in a series because the characters become like old friends.
