More Praise for the Darc Murders Collections...
"WOW, just WOW! I don't think I've ever come across such a gruesome series of crime scenes! Further knowing each of the scenes were booby trapped, had me cringing and then to read the full spectre of the carnage, left me in equal parts awe and queasiness of the macabre imaginings of the writers! They pulled out the big guns! There was gore galore! Luckily, I like that in a thriller, it makes the suspense that much higher and the take down of the bad guy that much more satisfying.

What I didn't expect was to be so enchanted by the characters. I loved the eclectic mix, from the brilliant but emotionally challenged Detective with Aspergers to his laid back empathetic partner plus the razor sharp mind of the child psychologist consultant and the adorable and brave sole survivor, little Janey. All these nuances and traits give a rich tapestry to the book and endear you to the clever writing of... Ben."

"I definitely recommend the Darc Murders Collection. The character development is phenomenal, story development is superb-- I thoroughly enjoyed reading both 9th Circle and 7th Sin; the story telling entwined with the characteristics of Darc's aspergers is incredibly entertaining. Not for the faint of heart, lots of gore and suspense, great mysteryseries."

I really really like this series.....not my usual reading, as I normally read paranormal romance/HEA stories. McCray's work is a refreshing break for me of my usual reading material. Definitely not for the faint of heart---gory and violence is graphically described, possibly giving you not-so-nice dreams.
This is a great deal for all the books included.
My review for Devious:
I read this before reading any other the other Darc books 9th Circle: 9 Circles, Infinite Ways to Die (Book 1 of the Darc Murder Mysteries Series) and 7th Sin: The Sequel to the #1 Hard Boiled Mystery, 9th Circle (Book 2 of the Darc Murder Mysteries Series) I just started book 1.

Back to this review---I am sure the 'real' first book of this series will be far more serious/gory (as I saw others mention). However, I would recommend this prequel even if you aren't planning on reading the rest. In and of itself it is a great short story. It shows the relationship (or lack thereof) between Darc and other police officers. Darc has Asperger's, which makes social etiquette/skills difficult for him to understand. Why ask about your day if I really don't care/see the point of it?? mentality can cause 'friendship/partnership' difficult to acquire.

We find Darc trying to solve a serial killer case and has been 'assigned' a new partner--Trey. Darc sees no reason why he needs help---he knows he can solve this by himself. Trey is a 'fun' personality with, my opinion, ADHD. Their personalities might be opposites but they work well together.

I really love Darc and Trey---I am looking forward to the first book.

Review for 9th Circle:
I read Devious: A 9th CIrcle prequel short story (Darc Murder Mysteries) and just finished this book. I would recommend the prequel as it's own story for those who might want something a little less gory but still touches on the reasons this book was good.

What I loved: The story is excecuted well, and although the pace might have been a little fast I did not mind it. The main detective is Darc, an individual with Asperger's (high functioning autism) who although severly lacks in the socialization department is a freaking genius at putting together pieces of a puzzle that others find unsolvable. The serial killer is quite busy in this book, and McCray doesn't leave much to the imagination as to the horror left behind. Darc is following clues left behind by the killer, and his partner, Trey, follows along. Many times he follows grudgingly--probably 99% of the time. Trey balances Darc's lack of socialization and has done an amazing job of attemptint to teach Darc normal social cues and situations. I love that Trey has given Darc "rules" to follow, and Darc attempts to follow them as much as his logical mind allows. Social skills need to be taught as essentially a subject to those with autism--they do not 'get' the emotional satisfaction from socialization and need to be taught how to act. As a high functioning autistic, Darc understands that certain social protocol is required if he wants a specific outcome.

The only thing that disappointed me was the romantic relationship Trey has in this book. I read other reviews and didn't find any that mentioned this, so it just might be me. However, I really really like Trey and I did not like that relationship. I understand that it was needed as a betrayal, but I still don't like it :( It just didn't sit right with my take of who Trey is.

I would recommend this to others and am going to start reading the sequel. Maybe there will be redemption for Trey or at least for me.

This is review is going to be coming in spurts. Just finished reading Deceived, another prequel short story to 9th Circle. As I read each book, I'll be editing this review.

Deceived is another short story that leads into the main books in this collection. I have yet to start 9th Circle, so I have no clue how this is headed. All I know is that we are again dealing with Darc and Keane. However, this time we are dealing with them being partners after several years. A unique bond has been developed between these two. However, they are also is a lot of still unknown area.

Darc's wife has left him. Keane is just Keane, a free spirited, breakfast meat loving man. Even though Darc is distant and withdrawn, Keane brings him down to earth and a touch of reality.

Again, our two favorite detectives are thrust into a murder that could possibly be a cold case serial murderer. We find that the murderer kills only those who are unfaithful. In this short story, I actually was able to figure out how the murderer was before the book disclosed it. I, however, didn't see it taking the story line that I thought.

In all, Deceived, was a great short story. I'm anxious to see how and why it is needed to lead into the following book, 9th Circle.

Just finished 9th Circle. I honestly don't know where to begin. This story was just down right out there in freakville! You have Darc and Trey on the case of a serial killer. They murders are exactly what Dante indicated in his depictions of hell. All I can say is hold onto your lunch folks. It's gross, morbid, descriptive, disgusting and just plain screwed up.

Nothing like finding a pool full of blood and dead bodies. I honestly was grossed out by this book and I have a strong stomach. BUT, I loved it! I know, weird! I honestly couldn't put it down. I had to hurry up and see who the real killer was. What really made me mad about this book was, I thought I had pegged the murderer. Then I find out it wasn't the one I thought. So who was it. Then the ending just made me sit up in bed and scream, NO FREAKIN WAY!

I'm now starting 7th Sin. I can't wait to see what happens. I hope that the ending is just as crazy as 9th Circle! WOW'!

Just finished 7th Sin. This book really agrivated me. This book picks up with Darc, Trey, Mala and Janey trying to recover from the horror of Father John. We start the book off with the good Dr. being kidnapped and Trey and Darc are trying to locate her. After her capture releases her, craziness takes over everyone's lives.

Darc is struggling with himself. He is starting to have feeling that he doesn't understand nor know how to handle. He is losing his edge and capabilities to solve crimes.

Trey is starting to learn that he is a good detective. He is back on an old case where a seriel killer is knocking off prostitutes. Then a socialite is killed and the case takes on a whole new spin. He turns to Darc for help, only to see his brainiac partner struggling. Trey being the kind and gentle soul he is, tries to help Darc deal with his emotions.

Mala is now a part time consultant for the police department. After her kidnapping, she is also trying to figure out what to do with Darc. He's a nut that she just can't crack. She also is trying her hardest to see that Janey is cared for properly.

Janey is becoming a wise young girl. I honestly hate her bear, Popeye, but it is her security blanket to the mean world they live in. Janey is still not talking. Her only means of communicating is via drawings. To top this all off, she is now being moved from foster home to foster home.

7th Sin is another great book that has lots of blood and guts. It does focus more on the personal lives of the main characters. You get a great insight into who they are what makes them tick. As frustrated as I was with this Darc in this book, I hope that he gets his act together and realizes his everything is right in front of him.

BTW, I did figure out who the killer was as soon as he was introduced into the story. For some reason, he just seemed off.

Next installment in the Darc Murders is a short story Carnal. Starting it as we speak.

Carnal leads to how Mala and Janey's relationship is progressing. Also, we see how Darc is handling a odd relationship with Mala. Then we have the wonderful, breakfast meat loving Trey. In this short story, we see how no matter things always turn out...Mala and Janey will be running head first into some type of serial killer. Makes you wander why they are so cursed. Thank goodness they have Darc to help them out.

Carnal is a little gross in regards to how it explains how the serial killer murders his victims.

Next book is 5th Penagram. I'm looking forward to this fall when I get the opportunity to see how Darc and the crew are holding up.

All these nuances and traits give a rich tapestry to the book and endear you to the clever writing of Carolyn and Ben.
I thought the plot was intricate and clever, the pace blistering, there were plenty of twists and surprises and, again, the character development was brilliant. As an avid reader of this genre, I was really impressed.
7th Sin

A Gruesome but Engaging Thriller

I loved the eclectic mix of characters from the brilliant but emotionally challenged Detective with Aspergers to his laid back empathetic partner plus the razor sharp mind of the child psychologist consultant and her adorable but complicated foster child. All these nuances and traits give a rich tapestry to the book and endear you to the clever writing of Carolyn and Ben. To go from inside the mind of a psychotic and zealous killer to then explore the fundamental thought processes of someone with Aspergers, further highlights the skill of the writers. As well as a good plot, the characters were the shining magic to me in this novel.
It has a good swift pace, surprises, plenty of gore and it definitely left me wishing the next book was available - instantly!

Obvious plot sequences and implausible situations made for an unchallenging read. Plot constructs were dropped or not followed up and there were many inconsistencies in detail between the books.

I believe there could have been more plot layers, I believe there were numerous opportunities to add some interesting sideplots to the story.
