Présentation de l'éditeur

Even the coldest cowboy’s heart can be ignited…

J-Bar ranch foreman Malloy pretty much keeps to himself—slinking around the edges of everybody else like an old coyote, doing his job and staying private. That is until Crispin Carrasco shows up. Lean, muscular, and with a motor mouth that won’t quit, Crispin sparks something in Malloy—something the foreman didn’t know was there. But how does a lone coyote approach the warmth of a fire? And more important, what would happen if that fire burned?

“Z.A. Maxfield has a lyrical way of writing that makes it easy to escape into the world that she creates for her characters.”—Night Owl Reviews

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent m/m romance -- far above the genre norm 21 août 2013
Par J. Holmes - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
I read a lot of m/m romance and this is one of the best written stories I've ever read. Sometimes you just click with an author's sense of humor and I loved every bit of this book. The closeted (as in, he didn't even know he was in the closet) character, the ranch foreman, is so well done. His internal thoughts are so rich and detailed and exactly what I would expect from a stoic man going through this kind of life-changing revelation. So often that aspect of the story is overlooked or weakly handled in a gfy (gay-for-you) romance. Crispin, the younger MC, was delightful with his motor mouth and his charm. I loved how he walked onto the ranch and caused such a soap opera drama just by existing with 3 strong, supposedly straight cowboys all reacting to him so strongly.

Nice plot, excellent writing, strong characterizations... I hope to read more Z.A. Maxfield soon

I gave up on reading a lot of m/m fiction when the field got crowded with little that was well written, or interesting or moving. . .or whatever. But when I found this one on Amazon I thought it might be worth a chance since I recalled reading some of Maxfield's stuff and being pleased that I had. I'm glad that I've read this one - and I recommend it highly. It's a well told story that is almost poetic at times - there's a lot about loyalty, families -- those we're born into and others we become part of - and intangibles that are more important than money or professional status. It's easy to read but it's not fluff - do something nice for yourself and buy this story. If you like it go back and read the other work by this author - she's got real writer's talent and you won't be disappointed by any of it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A lovely balance of deep emotional issues with moments of love and happiness! 25 août 2013
Par Because Two Men Are Better Than One! - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is a beautiful romance that shows what love and family are all about. It is heartwarming and tender with some emotionally charged moments.

Malloy had a very sad upbringing with a drug addicted mother who was always looking for the next man or the next fix. He largely had to fend for himself until Crandall Jenkins and his wife Emma took him in. They provided him with a job and a home on their ranch but most importantly a place in their family. Malloy's life largely revolves around the Jenkin's family, his role as foreman of the ranch and his need to earn Crandall Jenkin's love and respect.

Crispin has been through a terrible trauma and still bears the scars of his experience. Mr Jenkins offers him a place on the ranch and asks Malloy to keep an eye on the openly gay Crispin. This is the turning point in his life as Malloy's eyes are finally opened to the true man he is inside.

The scenes where Malloy first admits his feelings for another man are wonderfully done, with Malloy first facing the loss of his dream "I wasn't like Crandall Jenkins, and I'd never find an Emma. I'd never have what they had between them - not the home, not the kids, not the legacy, nor the love, nor the comfort of a lifelong partnership." but then realising this wasn't the end "It had only been moments since I'd thought about everything I'd lost, but now...now I could see what I'd gained."

Crispin is truly a strong and inspiring man. He sees so much of the truth in people and I really warmed to his character. It was easy to see why Malloy felt so passionately about the man. I enjoyed the build of the relationship and the very emotional connection they had as well as the extremely passionate sex.

The story follows the romance but also has a strong focus on family as Crandall gets sick and the family need to deal with the ramifications. We also get some insight into the other ranch hands, Eddie and Jim who have their own issues. (I can't wait to read their story in My Heartache Cowboy which is due Jan 2014). I guess Malloy's doctor had it right when he said "Are you living on a ranch or a telenovela?"

A lovely balance of deep emotional issues with moments of love and happiness!

My Cowboy Heart by Z.A. Maxfield introduces us to Malloy. He came to the Jenkin's ranch as a foster child, has grown up there, considers them his family, and now is ranch foreman. He's happy in his own private, quiet way. At least he thinks he is until Crispin shows up and forces Malloy to face who he really is and what's been lacking in his life. Crispin has relocated to the area to be close to family, and has been hired on at the ranch.

Crispin seems to be everything Malloy is not. He outgoing, very talkative, and very openly gay. When Crispin first arrives on the ranch, it is just as the Jenkin's are going on holiday, so Mr. Jenkin's has asked Malloy to watch out for Crispin. Little does Malloy expect to be attracted to Crispin! It's nothing he's really thought about before. He's been with women before...yeah, it's never really been that exciting or emotional, but wasn't that just the way it was? The more time Malloy spends with Crispin though, the more he likes to be with him and wants to be with him. The attraction is very mutual, and understandably Malloy is somewhat confused. He's not fighting what he feels, it's just so unexpected. He's always strived to be like Mr. Jenkin's, and to hopefully have what he has one day.

As Malloy and Crispin find their way together, the relationship is full of ups and downs. They are fairly isolated on the ranch with the other ranch hands, Eddie and Jim. Jim is full of talk and innuendos, but soon finds out that's not acceptable. Eddie seems to want to look out for Crispin, he's more caring than Jim is! At the beginning of a relationship it is nice they don't have to deal with a lot of outsider influence, expectations and judgement. Malloy's feelings towards Crispin continue to deepen, and Crispin takes him places he never thought he'd go both emotionally and physically. Now can't believe what he's been missing. Crispin's immaturity and younger age show- he's hot and cold with Malloy, which is frustrating for both Malloy and the reader! Will this be a brief relationship, or will Malloy and Crispin make it work? Do they belong together? When the even more unexpected happens and the future as Malloy envisioned it is now unknown, will it pull them apart or closer together?

Z.A. Maxfield gives us some interesting characters in My Cowboy Heart. Malloy is very driven by his work and doing the right thing for the Jenkin's, sometimes Crispin feels that this all comes before everything else. And for a while it really does, because Malloy really knows no other way. Malloy comes across as way older than the age we are told he is (early 30's). The dialogue between him and the other people in My Cowboy Heart is at times rough, and it is not until later in My Cowboy Heart that we are surprised to learn Malloy actually has a university degree. Even with that information, Malloy does not come across as a well educated man until well into My Cowboy Heart. Despite the huge changes in Malloy's life, I feel he does handle things very well though. He has risen above a childhood that left him in foster care, and is always striving for better. I really liked him, I found him to be open, honest, and caring. Inside that big cowboy is a heart of gold. Crispin was hard to like because of the way he sometimes treated Malloy and their relationship. He was very on and off, wanted it, didn't think it was a good idea, etc. As I mentioned, the maturity levels between Malloy and Crispin were very noticeable! Sometimes Crispin seemed more like a teenager blasting his way through.

Overall I found My Cowboy Heart to be an ok read about two people finding their way together, one of them discovering a whole new way of being that he didn't know he would be, but knows it's who he is. No matter what your sexual orientation, any romance reader can relate to the journey of the relationship. Z.A. Maxfield will take you on an emotional journey encompassing not just the relationship between Crispin and Malloy, but the relationship of those around them.

Any romance reader who enjoys the journey and doesn't mind explicit m/m sex scenes will enjoy My Cowboy Heart.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A Pleasant Surprise 20 août 2013

I admit that I picked this book to read because of the cover - Contemporary, Cowboy Romance, right? Well, I was partially correct. The main cast of characters are gay men; but shocker - still a really great romance! The premise of the book; two very different people trying to navigate the ups and downs and ins and outs of love, is well plotted and well written. Though there is sex and suspense, Z.A. Maxfield has offered what is at it's heart an engaging romance, with the main couple being strong enough to engage my emotional investment in their happily ever after. The secondary characters are so well drawn, the side -story so interesting, and the setting so wondrously realistic, I can very much recommend this book. It is evidently part of a series but certainly stands alone well. I would definitely read more from Z. A. Maxfield.
