I've been into herbal medicine and related things for many years, as well as organic gardening. If you've seen my sites about these subjects, you'll have seen the reasons why I got involved, all driven by life's events.

I've always loved cooking, and since my dad was a trained chef, I learned early on how to mix and match flavors, and the right way to do things. So when I found out I was gluten intolerant, the first thing I did was to gather together a bunch of recipes. Why not share them? I thought. So I did.

That explains my areas of interest, and my books. For the truth about the real me, you'll have to come over and share a cup of coffee...

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Information not quite correct 18 avril 2013

I don't much like to give a poor review, but in this case, the mordant information is simply not correct. the author has lumped modifiers and mordants together. This may be why she is not getting good colorfastness in her dyeing. I have been dyeing well over 40 years now, and colors that I got 40+ years ago are strong and bright. And the information on the process of mordanting does not give enough steps to mordant the different fiber properly, in particular the cellulose fibers. Her information on the assorted dyestuffs is good, but could be better if proper mordanting was done at the start. However, I would tell anyone starting out on the Natural Dyeing adventure to purchase or borrow several books on the subject and get much more information on how to proceed.

I've been a weaver for over 30 years, and done a fair bit of dyeing yarns. If you're just starting out in this interesting craft, this will be a good basic book to have. It begins with a very concise description of the rendering of the plants for dye, and the process for dyeing.

It is basically a catalog of colors, and the dye plants to achieve them. Some of the plants on the list are easily found or grown, while others, especially the range of mushrooms, will likely be much more difficult to find. Thankfully, the author has included botanical names, since plants often go by different common names, depending on locale.
The author has organized her information by color, with all the different plants that would render that color, along with mordants to achieve the best results.

I would have liked to see a different arrangement of information, so I would know at a glance what colors I could expect from a particular plant with the use of differing mordants on different fibres.

There are long lists of natural materials, the colors they produce and so-on. There is no index, which makes the book rather useless.

This is a useful Self-Help, Do It Yourself, How To, book, especially in this time of high unemployment in most countries, when people are trying to find ways of earning some money or earning extra money to compensate for low wages. It is also a means for starting a small self-employment project. If you are interested in learning to dye, you will find Fran's book helpful.
