Stewart "Stew" Smith is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, a former Navy SEAL, and author of several fitness books such as The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness, The Special Ops Workout, and S.W.A.T. Fitness. Stew has trained thousands of students for Navy SEAL, Special Forces, SWAT, FBI, ERT, and many other military, law enforcement, and fire fighter professions. He is currently the Special Ops Team Coach at the US Naval Academy that prepares future candidates for SEAL, EOD, and MARSOC training and runs a non-profit called Heroes of Tomorrow where he trains people seeking tactical professions for free. He has recently appeared on National Geographic's Fight Science - Special Ops where he was subjected to a hypothermic test and combat shooting course.

Let me first preface this review by saying I met Stew Smith at an event in September he was volunteering his time at and he could not have been nicer and friendlier to me when I introduced myself to him. We talked for awhile and I could not be more impressed how down to earth and approachable he was.

That being said - I have owned his first book on Navy SEAL Training for years and have always considered it the Holy Grail of fitness and exercise routines. There is simply nothing out there better than that book. Whether you are training for BUDs, fitness events, obstacle course events, general fitness, his 1st book is a masterpiece in of itself, and I am not being overly dramatic in saying that. If you don't own that - GET IT!!!!

When I first heard that a companion book was coming out to augment the training routines in the first book - of course I immediately placed my pre-order and awaited the book like a kid does Santa Clause on Christmas morning. I received the book today and Santa did not disappoint.

This book is not meant to replace the first one - but is clearly described as Phase 2. The book clearly is meant to work w the first one - which makes it that much better and worth while. Stew did not sell out and just reprint the same workouts as in the 1st book - but created this book as addition to your arsenal in terms of overall fitness goals. This book adds weight training and other exercises to build up muscle and strength after a period of longer distance running/swimming/rucking as envisioned in the 1st book. Stew clearly explains in detail the need to constantly change routines after periods to avoid injuries and general burn out. The workouts and program are as clearly presented as in the 1st book.

There is a section in the book about mental toughness that was not included in the 1st book that is a great addition. I have read that section 2x already and appreciate his sage advice as it obviously comes from a position of experience and lessons learned during his time in the SEAL Teams, USNA, BUDs, etc. Who better to teach these lessons than someone w Stews' experiences?

The best thing about Stews' books is how the workouts and program are presented. There is no guess work, no gimmicks, no fancy equipment required - just basic equipment and running shoes. What is required though is commitment and dedication. These workouts are not for the weary or those not "all in". Remember - these workouts are what Special Operations soldiers are doing, so don't expect a typical 45 minute aerobics or typical weight room routine. The routines and program will get you in the best shape of your life, and that will require a bit more time and commitment than some are accustomed to. But that is the tradeoff - if you want to be the best you can you have to train the best you can.

This book is a "MUST GET" IMHO along w the 1st book if you don't have it. There is simply nothing out there better than this.

Don't waste your time trying every online workout someone comes with. Not only is Stew a former SEAL, he's also a CSCS, the four most respected initials in strength and conditioning!

Stew is an absolute beast. He knows everything there is when is comes to PT. I recommend buying this book ASAP!

I was so excited for this book to be released. I loved all of Stew's books before this and this one is twice as great as the last. Excellent workouts and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be in the best shape of their life.
