Great Info! 27 août 2012

Lonely Planet has great country guides--and "Nepal" is no exception. This product has a lot of general info about the country, highlights the major cities that you will likely visit--i.e. Kathmandu, Pokhara, etc., and also includes information about trekking.
Before I purchased this item I debated whether or not to purchase "Trekking in the Himalayas", but I am pleased with my purchase of "Nepal" for its broader range of information. As a soon-to-be-first-time-trekker, I did not know how much trekking I would actually be doing. "Nepal" provides in-depth information on recommended trekking routes--the number of days the trek will likely take, maps of the trails, information on places to stay, gear to bring, the amount of money you are likely to spend, etc. It is perfect for outlining future treks!
However, after reading the descriptions of the treks and noting the amount of time I have to spend there (14 days), I have decided to choose a shorter trek near the Pokhara region, rather than embark on the most-popular Everest Trek. (The Everest Trek I will save for my next visit to Nepal). "Nepal" will help me plan those 14 days and all the adventures I can embark on near the Pokhara region. If you only have 3 days to spend--it recommends the priority places/events to experience. Really, this product provides great info for the soon-to-be traveler to Nepal!

Nice resource but a few gaps 20 juillet 2014

I used only a small portion of this book: The sections pertaining to Kathmandu. I would visit again in a heartbeat, but based on my experience there are a few glaring oversights. There are multiple Durbar Squares in Kathmandu, not just one… The book does not accurately describe how challenging it is to walk in Kathmandu, with traffic, broken sidewalks, and so forth… there are inordinate levels of dust on the roads (face masks are common)…street traffic is usually bumper to bumper with its own logic. It is no exaggeration that nearly every stroll and taxi ride is more or less death-defying… Even at a fine hotel, water typically comes out of the tap a pale green. After a week or so, the scent (part of the linens too) becomes part of you, so you may wish to pack soap or perfume to counter it. I've traveled the world but never got as sick (twice) as I did in Kathmandu, apparently related to the water, which I diligently avoided consuming…Suggestions on what prescription to ask for in the pharmacy in case you get "Kathmandu Flu" would help. I've never packed or needed it, but would recommend that travelers bring something like Ammodium, since you may need it (thankfully, I borrowed from a friend)….That said, please know that Kathmandu is an incredibly beautiful and wondrous place to visit, and the book gives you insights into what a splendid place it is.
Nepal is NOW! 18 mai 2014

I've always had a strong desire to pedal the Friendship Highway, but realize that as I get older and my body doesn't work as well as previously, that urge has had to be somewhat tempered. The reality of this was actually fortuitous when the opportunity arose for me to escort my 83-year mother on an outstanding overseas odyssey--pedaling was NOT to be our main mode of transportation! Anyway, Nepal is a long-fabled destination, and now is the time. Whenever I'm traveling to a new location on Earth, I like to go with a good idea of what to expect and the best source of that information are the Lonely Planet travel guides. These extremely concise books of knowledge are relevant and worth every amount I pay for them, even used. I'm quite appreciative that the information covers all levels of travelers. from youths who can take bare-bones/little $ to us older folks who enjoy a nooner(mil spec) and willing to pay $$. I became addicted to these worthwhile tomes after buying an out-of-date LP-China in 2004 in a used book store, while traveling an Eurasia odyssey with my then-young children, anticipating a need. And sure enough, when we were in Beijing a fortnight later, it was still a value source!

Does a great job of discussing Kathmandu and surrounding valley. It only touches on a few of the more popular treks. Good historical information..
