HASH(0x948b7090) étoiles sur 5 One of the few tech reference books that will be sitting on my bookshelf collecting dust. 18 avril 2015

Very basic information, but seemed like a book that was written for technologies of a decade or two ago, and just "updated" in a haphazard fashion to create another edition with a current copyright date without removing old information that just isn't relevant in 2015. Lots of references and time spent talking about coax network connections (does anyone use coax any more?), token ring networks, etc. Many references to Windows XP (and only one reference I found to even Win7). Maybe I was just expecting more.

A large chunk of the book (about the last 40%) was spent on "tutorials" on setting up and administering Windows Server 2012 and Oracle Linux (which even though I've been in the computer business for 20+ years now had never heard of, even though I've worked with Linux of various flavors for at least a decade) as well as Apache. I didn't feel any of these server setup sections were topically appropriate for a book on beginning networking.

Despite my attempts to like the book, I found myself putting it down rather quickly out of boredom. One of the few tech reference books that will be sitting on my bookshelf collecting dust.

HASH(0x948b72dc) étoiles sur 5 A good Beginner's Guide as stated in the title. 22 avril 2015

This review pertains only to the first half of the book, which I used to teach a university course in basic computer networking for mostly non-technical students. I found the content to be useful for this purpose. Computer networking is a technical subject, but this book covered relevant topics without being overly technical. Numerous instances of practical information as well as real-life examples were provided.

I did not find any teaching aids for this book, but it did not appear to be advertised as a textbook, so I don't consider that a deficiency. You would have to created your own as I did if you want it for teaching.

The only negative thing I can think to mention is that it lacks a chapter about wireless networking, which I consider to be a major networking service now.

I have used other books that were described as "basic", but were really anything but.

The book is for absolute beginners. It will introduce the readers to basic concepts. A reader with intermideate knowledge will not learn much.
