Présentation de l'éditeur

Never Look Back is a chilling and compelling debut crime thriller from Clare Donoghue set in South East London. For all those who enjoy Peter James, Mark Billingham and Peter Robinson.

Three women have been found brutally murdered in south London, the victims only feet away from help during each sadistic attack. And the killer is getting braver . . .

Sarah Grainger is rapidly becoming too afraid to leave her house. Once an outgoing photographer, she knows that someone is watching her. A cryptic note brings everything into terrifying focus, but it's the chilling phone calls that take the case to another level.

DI Mike Lockyer heads up the regional murder squad. With three bodies on his watch, and a killer growing in confidence, he frantically tries to find the link between these seemingly isolated incidents. What he discovers will not only test him professionally but will throw his personal life into turmoil too.

There are far too many serious grammatical faults and dodgy syntax for me to be able to enjoy this book. Why haven't the editors done their job, especially as it seems the author has been published by Macmillan! Another of my bugbears is the frequent use of what I presume are Americanisms: "He alarmed his car"? A good thriller has to be well written - too many recent publications are not.

The plot is really well thought out and the characters are highly believable. I simply couldn't put it down.
Can't wait to read Claire Donaghue's follow-up - I thoroughly recommend it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I was left looking over my shoulder... 13 mars 2014

Many thanks to the author and publisher for the compelling review copy.

Three women have been found brutally murdered in south London, the victims only feet away from help during each sadistic attack. And the killer is getting braver . . .

So, yet another brilliant debut novel due to hit the shelves next year "Never Look Back" introduces us to DI Mike Lockyer and his team as they investigate a series of murders...and a stalker.

Oh how I love when I get right in at the start of a new series, especially a headstart and especially when they are as good as this one. It was genuinely creepy - I have spent the last few days whilst reading it surreptitiously looking over my shoulder, checking out parked cars in case someone is in them and obsessively drawing the curtains in my house as soon as the sky starts to darken...Just in case you understand.

DI Lockyer is fantastic, I completely fell in love with him. Sidekick Jane shows intelligence and depth and offsets him perfectly...together they delve into a mind of darkness and try and figure out how to stop the slaughter- but both have personal lives that can get in the way.

Meanwhile we also follow Sarah, who is becoming increasingly withdrawn from life having received a number of sinister phone calls, and always having a sense of being watched - the police seemingly able to do nothing, she hides away, finding it harder and harder to leave her sanctuary. Could her world and that of the murder victims be about to collide?

Cleverly written, broken down into days, we watch the investigation, Sarah's increasing paranoia and DI Lockyer's struggle to separate his emotions from the practical necessities of chasing a killer...and all the while the disturbing atmosphere builds.

Ms Donoghue writes with a clear eye to the ironic, in a smooth and addictive style, all the while adding substance and clarity to her characters as we get to know them. The final resolution is perhaps one of the best ones I have read lately and with a teaser of what is to come at the end of my beautiful review copy, my chronic impatience has just kicked in once more.

Happy Reading Folks!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Boy what a waste of time 11 février 2015

I came to this site to read what others had written about this book. I saw this in the library and not having seen anything else while I was in a hurry, I briefly read the jacket to get a sense of the storyline, grabbed it and left. Boy what a waste of time. First I have to say I am a mystery reader and it's my favorite genre. I have read the best over the years. And from the rave reviews on the dust jacket I thought I had gotten lucky and discovered another gem. Not to be I'm afraid. This is the most boring book. Boring because it has no depth. No character development, no subplots, no complex plotting that weaves itself throughout the story. The characters are cardboard and two dimensional, the storyline formulaic, and the plotting predictable. The language is pedestrian, the sentences simple and uninspiring, the imagery almost non existent. Half way through it I had no connection to the primary character (Detective Mike Lockyer) nor could I care less about reading any other sequal that featured him and his staff. There is no connection to the characters except they pop in and out and leave you with no inkling as to anything personal about them. And that brings me to something else I noticed: those who have difficulty developing a storyline of interest invariably throw in as many characters as they can get away with. I lost track. I was very disappointed with this book and would not bother with another offering from this author.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 An OK Read 21 avril 2015

Just a so-so read. If I was grading papers I'd give it a C+. Rather predictable and about halfway in I was pretty sure who the murderer was. And was proved correct. The lead character (in the series) is one uptight dude, especially in his personal life. How can someone who has to deal with all sorts of people in his professional life be so inept with people he is close to in his personal life? The dichotomy did not ring true. The entire story hinged on a weak, craven woman, which is the personality type I like least so maybe that colored my perspective of the entire story. Where is Kinsey Milhone when you need her.

I liked it enough to finish it and that is saying something so if you pick it up to read, caveat emptor. It depends on what you expect and want in a psychological thriller/police procedural.

In Clare Donoghue's "Never Look Back," a psychopath has been assaulting and murdering young women. Detective Inspector Mike Lockyer of Lewisham's Murder Squad in London, and his "right hand," Detective Sergeant Jane Bennett, are investigating. Although Mike is smart and competent, he is too tense and distracted to concentrate fully on his job. DI Lockyer is guilt-ridden about spending too little time with his older brother, Bobby, who lives in a residential home; Mike still pines for his estranged wife, Clare; and he chides himself for spending too little quality time with his daughter, eighteen-year-old Megan. Mike is shaken up when he learns that the latest victim of a sadistic serial killer bears a strong resemblance to Megan.

The author breaks little new ground in a well-worn genre. Mike is not a fan of the brass, can be rebellious at times, and behaves self-destructively. On the other hand, he is intuitive, tenacious, and a good leader. Jane, who has personal issues of her own, tries to keep her boss on an even keel when she senses that he is reaching the end of his tether. The most sympathetic character is Sarah Grainger, a freelance photographer who is being harassed by an unidentified stalker. She has lost a great deal of weight, neglects her hygiene, and seeks support from her kindhearted girlfriend, Toni. However, even when Sandra repeatedly asks the police for help, they do little to allay her fears.

Donoghue keeps the action moving at a fast clip, skillfully builds suspense, and adroitly foreshadows the horrors to come. However, this novel is too similar to others of its kind, except for the introduction of a pair of crazies, both of whom strike terror into the hearts of helpless females. Mike is your typical tormented and flawed hero, who may be in for even more heartbreak. We assume that he will return in another installment to lick his wounds and try to quell the discontent that lies at the core of his being.
