4.0 étoiles sur 5 Strong second installment in the series 8 octobre 2011

I picked up the first in this series a while back when it kept popping up on my "we think you would like this" list from Amazon. The cover was appealing, the price was right, and I enjoy a cozy mystery so I decided to give it a try. Since I didn't know anything about the author except what I read here on Amazon, it was a bit of a risk but it really paid off. I enjoyed "Never Buried" quite a bit and bought the rest of the series for my Kindle since I had such a high level of confidence that I would want to continue. Over the past couple of days I read "Never Sorry" and I continue to be pleased.

In "Never Sorry" our main character, Leigh Koslow, is back and trying to get her new advertising business off the ground. As with any new business, the cash flow is tight so she takes up a part-time job at the local zoo to help cover her living expenses. She has experience around animals since she helped in her father's veterinary practice for years and the job holds extra appeal since the vet is someone she had a crush on as a teenager. When body parts are discovered by Leigh at the tiger exhibit and the victim turns out to be a frenemy from high school, she becomes one of the primary suspects. Trying to figure out what happened and why in order to clear her own name, Leigh find herself deeply involved in the investigation.

While definitely in the "cozy" mystery genre, this series has a bit more realism than many books published in the genre. The reasons why Leigh is involved make sense, the motive is reasonable, and the characters largely act in a rational fashion. The characters are developing nicely and the dialog is way above average for a light, easy read. It's not quite as heavy on setting and atmosphere as some of my favorite series such as the Tea Shop mysteries by Laura Childs and the Coffeehouse mysteries by Cleo Coyle.

Bottom line: Glad I have read both books and am looking forward to the next three. A very nice way to spend a few enjoyable hours.

After being fired from Peres and Lacey Advertising, Leigh Kaslow and several other ex-employees from their own agency, but a lack of capital leaves them in trouble. To supplement her income, Leigh hires on as a vet technician working with her former crush Dr. Mike Tanner. Mike used to work for Leigh's father. Her interest in the doctor is rekindled, but this time he seems to reciprocate her feelings.

One late evening after a tough surgery, Leigh spots a light in the tiger exhibit. She investigates and finds dry blood and body parts. Covered in blood, Leigh runs to get help. She thinks the victim is her old nemesis Carmen. The police charge Leigh with murdering her old enemy. Though frightened by it all, Leigh begins making inquiries to prove her innocence.

Any one who knows Leigh Kaslow realizes she is fictional proof of a corollary to Murphy Law as she seems to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time. NEVER SORRY is a shock a minute as an amateur sleuth that is impossible to predict what happens next. Edie Claire keeps her audience on edge with her ability to produce one stunning event after another. Leigh is a likable character who will get inside the reader,s soul and root for her to escape from her current woes. Ms. Claire is a wonderful story teller who provides a superb addition to the mystery genre.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Captivating Story! 29 août 2000

After finishing Miss Claire's Never Buried, I was looking forward to reading the next book in her series. Usually, the second in a series is not quite a good as the first. Boy, was my assumption wrong! Never Sorry was a wonderful read. Leigh Koslow is back with her best friends in a mystery that will keep you reading until late into the evening. While working part-time at the local zoo, Leigh stumbles across a gruesome "surprise" in the tiger cage. Miss Claire is not graphic in her descriptions (thankfully!) of the crime scene, but your imagination will run away as you read the story. Leigh has another crime on her hands that she must solve for her own good. Add romance, wild animals, great friends, and a few psyco's from her past and you have the beginnings of a fabulous mystery! This book deserves six stars!

NEVER SORRY follows NEVER BURIED as the second Leigh Koslow mystery.
Leigh is a copywriter who is trying to get her new agency up and running, but until she can recruit more clients, she has to take a job at the Riverview Park Zoo to make ends meet. It's there she meets up with Mike Tanner, an old crush, and other "blasts" from the past. When the remains of a body are found by Leigh in the Tiger exhibit, Leigh gets herself trapped in a deadly game of "whodunit" that only her cop friend Maura, and her political candidate Warren, and her lawyer Katherine can help her out of.
This is a riveting, mind-blowing book with an ending that will leave you in shock. This book is well written, and the plot is perfect for any mystery-lover. The characters are well formed and very easy to picture. Leigh comes across as a caring, strong-willed amateur sleuth. I loved this one, and with the cliffhanger Ms. Claire leaves at the end, I can't wait for the next one.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Finally! A cozy mystery that's not written for morons! 30 janvier 2012

I spent this entire week reading all of the Leigh Koslow mysteries and I loved them!
This is saying a lot because I am a bit of a snob when it comes to the cozy mystery genre. Most of them seem to be written in such a juvenile way that I feel resentful toward the author for treating me like a child.
I once read a book where the narrating character said "Yummy in my tummy" to describe the tacos she was eating. I had to stop reading immediately. I've never forgiven that author.

But with Edie Claire, I never had to worry about my intelligence being insulted. Her mysteries are straight forwar d and written with warmth and humor.
I won't give the plot away but you learn to love all the quirky characters, including Leigh's overbearing mother.

The only thing that irritated me slightly was the constant reminder that her friend Maura was large. Her "hulking frame" or "massive size" was mentioned repeatedly. Or maybe it seemed that way since I read all five books back to back.

I definitely recommend Edie Claire for a very cozy mystery!
