Présentation de l'éditeur

When a hurricane blows through town and threatens the future of Olivia Clark's animal shelter, she publicizes her desperate plea for help to the masses. Aid comes from a surprising source: Chloe Homestead, Olivia's ex-girlfriend from thirteen years ago and the only girl Olivia has ever loved. Chloe, a self-made millionaire, offers to finance and manage the shelter’s repairs and operations, a gesture Olivia is in no position to refuse. Working intimately together to provide loving care to homeless animals, Olivia struggles to keep her composure in Chloe’s fun and flirty presence. As Olivia's walls start to crumble, the past catches up to them. Chloe has a dark secret, a secret that she’s been carrying around for thirteen years.

Will Chloe's secret threaten the future of the shelter and the relationship she has worked so hard to restore?

I judge a book by how much I come care about the characters, am I rooting for them to get together, are all the subplots resolved, am I skipping through pages, are the actions of the characters believable, would I recommend it to a friend, etc. Given the plot, this book could have been so much better. I found the book had too much information not relevant to the story and not enough dialogue. I found myself skipping over pages because the information didn't advance the story. There was too much information on the shelter and not enough interaction and development of the characters. Several times during the book the author described the same shelter details over again. I prefer books which are dialogue driven. I want to experience the story through the characters' thoughts, their dialogue with each other and how they act and interact. Some of the subplots were handled awkwardly. It seemed there was a whole scene missing at the end of the book concerning the brother's subplot. There were some good parts to the book and the story had potential, but something was missing. Given the 4 and 5 star ratings from other readers, I expected to like this book more.

I want to start out by saying I didn't hate this book. I think this book had the potential to be a lot better and it seemed as if the author sort of got tired by the end and tried to resolve everything too quickly which hurt the book. I came to care about one of the main protagonists of this book, the other I couldn't like no matter how much I tried.

The author did a great job of making the reader sympathize with Olivia. We feel her emotions, we feel her pain, and we want her to be able to overcome her past. Chloe on the other hand, never quite reaches that place for the reader. I wanted to see growth in this character. I wanted her to do things differently this time around. I wanted her to do something to prove herself to Olivia besides just throwing money at her, I wanted her to actually show that she was a good person besides just saying it. I wanted her to not lie, but all she did was lie. I never quite got past the fact that she had not changed from her lying habit. There were ample chances for her to come clean to Olivia, but she never did and that does not show growth in the character.

My main problems with this work:

1) Chloe's continuous lying, even when a mature person would realize the time for lying is over.

2) Olivia and Chloe never really talk about what happened between them. There are a couple of sentences of yelling, people not talking to each other, and suddenly, sex. I never felt like anything was actually resolved between them.

3) Chloe lies to Olivia throughout this book (and I mean from beginning to end), Olivia is justifiably upset when she finds out, Chloe convinces Olivia that OLIVIA is really the one to blame, Olivia talks to a deaf dog, decides Chloe is absolutely right in being the one who is upset and that Chloe must surely be a excellent candidate for a partner because she likes dogs, and goes crawling back to Chloe. REALLY??? I mean, REALLY??? Where is the mature discussion? Where is Chloe actually wooing Olivia rather than just using sex to distract Olivia from their problems?

4) Olivia has no backbone.

5) The author made me care about the Melanie and Jaqueline side story, then gave us a lackluster reunion between the two, with Melanie suddenly falling in love with some guy no one cares about, killed off Jaqueline, and randomly had Melanie marry the guy no one cares about while the love of her life has been dead for about an hour.

Did I hate this book? No, I obviously finished it. I kept reading because I did care about the characters on some level. They just never really redeemed themselves. The resolution in this book was non-existent. Which, SUZIE CARR, if you're reading this review, you must work on this. I don't think you're a bad writer. You actually engaged me on all levels and forced me to finish the book even while I could see no satisfying resolution in sight and character assignation left and right. I will be reading more of your books and hopefully, the resolution is better in your other novels.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A beautiful story of love and rescue. 14 juillet 2014

Eloquently written story about saving lives and having your forever love. Suzie Carr has brilliantly shown us that both go hand in hand, in her book A New Leash on Life. We also see that maybe..Just maybe, the life you're saving, could be your own.

The plot was cute and I loved that it included dogs. However I feel like there were chunks of the story that were left out. I was left to assume some parts or wondering what happened in between the lines sort of speak..

Just finished reading my first book by Suzie Carr. A New Leash on Life is a beautiful story with wonderful characters. I have a mind that wanders and often have a difficult time staying focused with reading but not with this book! I loved all of the characters, the settings, the story line and of course General. I am looking forward to reading another book by Suzie Carr!!!
