Présentation de l'éditeur

2013 International Thriller Award Nominee

In the space of a few months, Blake Sanders has lost his job, his only son to suicide, and his marriage. A year later, it's gotten so bad that he can only face the world at night, working menial jobs washing dishes and delivering newspapers, lost in depression and grief.

Blake's world is turned upside down again on a cold November night, when an elderly woman on his newspaper route is brutally stabbed to death and Blake is charged with her murder. Faced with life in prison, his only hope is to find the real killer.

In a desperate attempt to unravel the mystery, Blake learns that his friend had stumbled onto secrets that have been buried beneath Capitol Hill for 150 years. Secrets that are now being disturbed by the construction of the new light rail tunnel. Secrets that will shake the government of Seattle. Secrets that foreign agents will kill for.

On the run from the police and murderers, Blake finds a chance to heal his grief and reclaim his life—if he can stay alive long enough to unearth the truth.

The main character is naïve, thus heroic and very attractive

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A thriller with bite! 23 octobre 2012
Par Brenda Telford - Publié sur Amazon.com
Blake Sanders felt like he had lost everything...twelve months ago, his only son Cole had committed suicide, and he blamed himself. He should have been able to help him, and couldn't work out why he hadn't seen the signs. After he lost his job in a shocking scandal he was innocent of, but couldn't prove, he lost his beautiful wife Molly to divorce... So when he came across a woman threatening to jump from a bridge, while he was driving to his night time job, he was determined to save her...

Later, as he did his newspaper delivery round through the streets of Seattle, he looked forward to catching up with Midge, his last customer on the run. Midge, an elderly lady he had struck up an odd friendship with, was a kind gentle soul, who spent her daylight hours volunteering at the nearby Joyance House, near the church and rectory. To his disappointment, Midge's house was in darkness, so he continued on his way.

To Blake's horror, Midge had been brutally murdered in her home, and now the police were after him for her murder. Both Donovan and Hiragawa didn't believe his claims of innocence, and ex-wife Molly's team of lawyers were immediately on his case. On bail, Blake decided he needed to prove his innocence, and so began the incredible race against time, and his life, with a rogue French military intelligence agent, a shadowy murderer and the police all after him.

With the assassination of a key player, the mystery surrounding events which occurred in the 1850's, a recently found journal by Sister Marguerite, which seemed connected to Midge's death, the gorgeous Lieutenant Commander Reyna Chase of Navy Intelligence deeply involved... Councilman Rafe Acasa and his sidekick Dan Whiting....would Blake be able to stop the horrific murders before he himself lost his life? Who could he trust? It seemed he was on his own...

This brilliant thriller is the first in the Blake Sanders series, and I will definitely be reading the next! I could not put this book down, the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat, the absolutely breathtaking scenes had me right there.... Well done Mike Sherer and thank you for my advanced copy!

This excellent story opens with enough information to solidly grab the reader's attention. Tension grows through the exquisitely developed plot as we encounter characters who we want to learn more about.

The story opens with a segment in France where a French rouge agent knows it's time to leave the country. He's given a lead on something valuable in Canada so travels there in hope of making a big score.

In Seattle, Blake Sanders was a public affairs official who lost his job and family after a financial scandal. He's haunted by the suicide of his son and subsides by his reserves and delivering newspapers.

Blake's misfortunes seem to have given him more empathy for others. His part in the story opens with him talking a woman from taking her life by jumping from a bridge.

The last stop on his delivery route is to an elderly woman. She seems lonely and he often stops in and has tea with her. Someone murders her and tries to set Blake up to take the blame.

Part of the story involves a historic event in the 1850s where an order of nuns were given land and the mineral rights to the land. What this has to do with present times and how this is tied in to a number of other incidents was very imaginative.

Readers looking for an excellent story and well written literature will be rewarded with reading this edge of seat thriller.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A Big And Messy Thriller: An Engaging Lead Struggles With Far Too Many Plot Threads 6 février 2013

Format:Broché|Commentaire client Vine pour produit gratuit (De quoi s'agit-il?)
Combining elements of the classic wronged man thriller with the historical quest elements popularized in novels such as "The Da Vinci Code," author Michael Sherer has created a page turner in "Night Blind" that's easy to like, if not always easy to take seriously. If you want a fitfully entertaining journey, there is a lot to recommend Sherer's latest. But as much as I enjoyed the book (and I did), it's disparate plot threads wind over one another with great convenience and little plausibility. At the heart of the story is a typically troubled antihero named Blake Sanders. As a man falsely accused of numerous wrongs, Sanders must prove his innocence as well as divert an international crisis, unravel a century's old mystery, solve several murders, and uncover the political corruption plaguing Seattle's local government. That's a lot to maintain while still holding on to a nightly paper route! I credit Sherer, at least, for making Sanders a character that you want to follow into the darkness no matter how murky the narrative can get.

I can't really attempt to describe the plot of "Night Blind" in any meaningful way that will make much sense. Let's just say that a shadowy historical story surrounding nuns and sailors (possibly involving massive amounts of gold, possibly involving a biological weapon) might be the undoing of Seattle. An elderly friend of Sanders stumbles upon a part of the conspiracy and meets her untimely demise. In an effort to avoid taking the rap for her murder, Sanders start to dig into the mystery. Along the way, he'll be influenced by three women: his ex-wife with whom he shares a tragedy, a lady he rescues from a botched suicide attempt, and a no-nonsense Naval analyst. He must evade a murderer, a rogue French agent, the cops, personal demons involving his son, and the events that destroyed his promising career. Wow! Even writing this review, I'm astounded that "Night Blind" works at all. It tries to juggle way too much and, as a result, loses its way on occasion. One primary example is the suicidal character. She starts out strong, but seemingly has nothing to do after being introduced (aside from coincidentally being in a position to get Sanders some information for his investigation).

And yet, despite its over-ambition, "Night Blind" still succeeds as a rousing adventure. Sherer does a good job with the action pieces, and Sanders is a compelling lead. In the end, the plot is so convoluted that many of the themes or characters introduced get short shrift. And upon the big reveal, I couldn't help but be a little let down by the final revelations. Not for one second did I believe "Night Blind," but I did have fun. I suppose that's enough for a mild recommendation. I would definitely look into other works by Sherer. He's a talented writer that keeps you turning the pages. I just hope next time, the tale he chooses will be a bit more focused. As a character, Sanders is supposed to be affected by ADD (not really developed in any tangible way) and that's a great metaphor for "Night Blind." The book jumps all over the place trying to be everything to everyone, and so loses the impact that it might have had. About 3 1/2 stars for entertainment value. KGHarris, 2/13.

Blake Sanders had a good life but now delivers newspapers and washes dishes. A year earlier his son committed suicide, and was accused of theft at his job. His marriage fell apart and he blamed himself for his son's s death. One evening while delivering the paper, he stops a woman from killing herself. At the same tie, an elderly woman on his route was murdered and all the evidence points to him. Desperate to clear his name, he stumbles upon more than he bargained for. A hunt for hidden treasure and a religious mystery that happened over 150 years earlier brings in not only the US Navy, the FBI but also a rogue French military agent.

Michael W. Sherer has created a likeable character in Blake Sanders. He is a complicated man but the author lets out a little about him as the story develops. We get to learn who he is and what makes him tick and his relationships with other. The story also unfolds, not in a chaotic confusion, but clearly evolving as each piece of the puzzle is connected. As I read each chapter, I wanted to know more about the nun's secret. It all comes to a head and the climax is worthy of the pages before it. This was a very good novel and I look forward to the continuing adventures of Blake Sanders.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Intertwined storyline that comes together nicely. 11 décembre 2012

If you like your story lines with a few things going on at once, you will love this book. The story lines are intertwined and come together nicely at various points in the book and not all at once.

The main character, Blake Sanders, is a lost soul who has experienced some hard knocks in his personal and professional life and he lets it get the best of him. He inadvertently gets involved in a murder that pinpoints him as the murderer and from that point on the book takes off. He is bound and determined not to "roll over" and let things get out of control again as he is innocent in the murder. He finds himself in a complicated and mysterious dilemma and he does his best to get out of the mess that he is in.

Strong characters make up the gist of this book and the story line moves quickly. The only thing that I found not to my liking is the way the Navy agent finds Blake. A bit too consequential, but it does work in the end. You don't find out about Blake's son until near the end of the book and it is heartbreaking and surprising. Very nicely handled by Mr. Sherer.

All in all, this is a very good book, not great, but very, very good. I will be recommending it to others as it is well worth reading.
