Shannon Curtis is an independent songwriter, singer, performer, and recording artist. Her second full-length record of downtempo dreampop, Metaforma, was released in June 2014, one day less than a year after her 2013 debut album Cinemascope.

Curtis has also previously released three EPs, two acoustic LPs, two 10-track maxi-singles and two live albums, all on her own Saint Cloud Records label.

Curtis’s pioneering use of the house concert touring format has brought her to about half the states in the US so far, and also to Canada.

Curtis lives in Los Angeles with her husband, producer/engineer Jamie Hill.

I'm working on a solo album right now, and after reading this book, I'm seriously thinking about whether house concerts might be the best way to promote it. Curtis' writing is clear, detailed, and persuasive. She makes such a great case for this business strategy—and make no mistake, a business strategy is what it is, but it also sounds like a lot of fun.

Shannon Curtis clarifies a number of points, based on her own experience, in summing up the do's and don't's of home concert performing. In an age when even the bar gigs may not generate enough revenue for artist survival, the option of performing for an audience in a listening environment is an excellent way for a performer to "get out there."
Additionally, she takes a lot of the mystery from the procedure by pointing out what has worked, as well as what hasn't. The subtle points are probably the most valuable, simply because they are points generally not even considered by the average performer, let alone someone who wishes to host a show!

As an independent artist who's done nearly a hundred house shows, I'm here to tell you that anyone who's considered going that route needs this book. Of all the crap we waste money on as artists, nothing I can think of will give you the return on investment this book will. Shannon gives you a staggering level of detail on everything from arrival time to merch location to what music to play after the show is done. Stop reading this review and read the book, like, now.

Shannon Curtis has been there, and done that. Her voice is one of talent and experience.

We all want to live the dream and have a successful, full life based solely on our creative endeavors. It is easy to say, and nowhere close to easy to accomplish.

Shannon provides an authentic history, one that is full of hard-learned lessons, funny stories, and the clear focus that is ultimately the most vital aspect of an independent musician.

If touring is your dream, then this is your roadmap.

This book contains a lot of useful tips about what type of equipment to bring on the road at an affordable price. I also thought that the info about how to ask for donations at a house show was also pretty helpful. The book is not too long and is definitely something I can refer back to in the future.
