Revue de presse

"As a huge fan of the genre, and someone who has read, watched and enjoyed much of it, I found this book informative and entertaining and I learned a lot....the real reason for the success of this book is partly because Forshaw is an expert on the crime genre in general, but largely because he knows the author's personally thus giving the interviews depth and honesty." --Mystery People

Présentation de l'éditeur

Nordic Noir: The Pocket Essential Guide to Scandinavian Crime Fiction, Film and TV by Britain's leading expert on crime fiction, Barry Forshaw, is a compact and authoritative guide to the phenomenally popular genre. The information-packed study examines and celebrates books, films and TV adaptations, from Sjöwall & Wahlöö's highly influential Martin Beck series through Henning Mankell's Wallander (subject of three separate TV series) to Stieg Larsson's groundbreaking The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, cult TV hits such as the Danish The Killing, The Bridge and the political thriller Borgen, up to the massively successful books and films of the current king of the field, Norway's Jo Nesbo. Nordic Noir anatomises the nigh-obsessive appeal of the subject and highlights every key book, film and TV show. For both the beginner and the aficionado, this is a hugely informative, highly accessible guide (and shopping list) for an essential crime genre.Nordic Noir: The Pocket Essential Guide to Scandinavian Crime Fiction, Film and TV by Britain's leading expert on crime fiction, Barry Forshaw, is a compact and authoritative guide to the phenomenally popular genre. 3.0 étoiles sur 5 Author comes off as a bit arrogant, but there are some good topics here 1 novembre 2013

The author certainly is a bit puffed up, and the book is as well. Ever see a comedy sketch that exhausts the joke after a minute but goes on for another seven minutes? This piece could have been a good essay rather than a mediocre book. I like that the author didn't start with Larsson but gave Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö their due, but then again the book seems to compare everything to Larsson. I'll take one Jo Nesbø book over Larsson's entire trilogy any day.

There is a lot of information in this book, conveniently assembled in one place. A lot of it comes from long quotes from other authors. who are shamelessly pillaged. There are some astonishing errors of fact. Forshaw has no insight or analysis. So you only learn the surface of things.Use the book as a way of gaining access to the field and check his factual assertions that give pause because they may well be incorrect.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Interested in Scandi Noir? This is the must-read book! 10 décembre 2014

With the forthcoming Millenium title due to hit shelves in 2015, now is the time to swot up on Scandi noir as we prepare for another wave of its popularity to hit us. Barry Forshaw's Pocket Essential guide to Nordic Noir has proven to be the perfect starting point to Scandinavian fiction, film and television - it gives an accessible and engaging insight into this global phenomenon and has inspired me to look beyond the obvious choices of Stieg and Nesbo. I have already recommended this book to several friends and look forward to expanding my understanding of noir beyond Scandi shores with his Euro Noir guide. A must-read for anyone with an interest in noir.

This book provides a handy guide to both well-known and not so well-known writers of Nordic crime fiction. One need not agree with all of the author's views to make use of this book for future book purchases. At times, the author seems to be a bit too much of an agent for writers he knows, perhaps, too well. He also is of the school of thought that good mysteries must be weighed down with social commentary. I thought he gave too little attention to Helene Tursten, who in a field over populated by "damaged" detectives, has produced a refreshingly sane protagonist in the form of Detective Inspector Irene Huss. There is the minor mystery of whether Ms. Huss is an expert practitioner of judo or jujitsu (no doubt a problem in translation). Nevertheless, Mr. Forshaw has has produced a vital book for all readers of mystery fiction.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Indulge and enjoy from the Nordic Noir guide 11 décembre 2014

My interest in Nordic fiction was sparked by the Steig Larsson Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. This guide to Nordic Noir was the perfect way to indulge in this genre across tv, film and books. Barry Forshaw clearly knows what he's talking about and thanks to Nordic Noir I now have a whole host of books on my Christmas wish list!
