Présentation de l'éditeur

An overview of all the religious traditions of the Northern Tradition illustrating their diverse scope and how they have developed into modern-day religions. NORTHERN TRADITION FOR THE SOLITARY PRACTITIONER is a groundbreaking look at the development of devotional work within the body of polytheistic religious traditions ranging from Theodism to Asatru to Norse Paganism, that comprise the greater umbrella of the Northern Tradition. While interest in devotional and experiential work within these traditions has been growing rapidly over the past few years, this is the first book to offer an inclusive look at the diverse scope and breadth of such practices as a living, modern-day religion. It features an in-depth exploration of altar work, prayer, prayer beads, ritual work, sacred images, lore and a thorough examination of the common core cosmology that forms the foundation of belief for the vast expanse of Northern Tradition communities. NORTHERN TRADITION FOR THE SOLITARY PRACTITIONER is not denomination-specific: rather, it seeks to provide an entry into interior practice for anyone involved in a branch of this broad family of traditions of the ancient Norse, Germanic and Saxon peoples, using material suitable for the solitary, independent practitioner. Those outside of the Northern Tradition who wish to deepen their own devotional practice will find this book helpful in their own work, as well.

Livre intéressant avec plein de points de vues différents.
Mais pas pour les débutants : mieux vaut avoir de bonnes connaissances des bases dans l'Asatru pour lire ce livre.

Way too god-focused - completely ignoring everything else about Northern Tradition spirituality 5 août 2014
Par bansheexcat - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
As a solitary heathen, I purchased this book hoping it would help me develop my own individual practice. Heathenry tends to stress group practice. As a solitary, it can be hard to figure out how to DIY in your own backyard. However, there was nothing in "Northern Tradition" to help me with that. Instead it is solely about developing a devotional relationship with Norse gods.

I unfortunately did not read the subtitle very closely. While my disappointment is partly my own fault, I feel that the book has some major flaws that should be addressed beyond my negligence at reading subtitles.

The underlying theme throughout the book is that heathens focus too much on practice, right action and reasoned inquiry and neglect devotion and mysticism. However, I feel like Krasskova and Kaldera go way too far down their own devotional and mystical path. Any commonality with the rest of heathenry is completely lost. The authors seem to argue that it is only the gods that matter and nothing else.

While its hard to have religion without gods (Buddhism being the notable exception), religion is more than just relationship with the divine. While the authors criticize others for carrying Christian baggage, focusing exclusively on one's relationship with a god, denigrating anything that is not god-focused...that sounds an awfully lot like a Christian thing to me. There is very little about honor, frith, hamingja, wyrd, etc. If its not about focusing all attention to the gods, it has little value to Krasskova/Kaldera. And what is the ultimate purpose? Some kind of Viking grace? Instead of the suffering of Jesus on the cross, heathens can relate to the suffering of Sigyn with the bowl?

Which brings me to my next point, even if you are in agreement with the authors' viewpoint of heathen spirituality, the chapters on prayers and devotional rites contain very little that will be useful to most heathens. In the rites section there are instructions for holding the bowl for Sigyn, a goddess rarely worshiped outside of Krasskova/Kalderas circle. Another ritual is for anointing an image of Njord, not one of the more popular gods. There are examples of an ancestor and land-wight blot/faining, as well as a ritual for Tyr. But that's it. In the section on prayer, there is a whole lot of talk of why prayer is important but few actual examples of prayers.

The sections on prayer beads and altars are a little better. There is a comprehensive appendix at the end with suggests for altars and offerings for specific deities. These sections are what saves the book from having two stars rather than one.

But the sections on Right Action and Sacred Inquiry are very problematic for me. Essentially, Krasskova and Kaldera argue that we really don't have enough sources to truly reconstruct the religion of our ancestors. And since some of the practices, such as human sacrifice, are unacceptable these days, we really should just focus on devotion instead. Through mystical experiences with the gods, they will let us know how they want us to behave.

Just like any other reconstructionist religion, heathenry can never completely recreate the religion of our ancestors, but over the last few decades heathens have done the work of taking what we DO know and what DOES work and synthesizing it into a growing religious movement. Spirituality should give people a since of their place in the world, give their lives meaning and guide their behavior. It isn't as Krasskova/Kaldera argue, JUST about the gods.

Best book for deepening the spirituality of those into northern traditions... 16 janvier 2013

This book is not for those new to Asatru/Heathenism/Norse-Paganism, but is instead for those whom are already familiar with the northern traditions and already have their own practice going. Basically what this book is about is deepening ones spirituality and this it does amazingly well like nothing else. Highly recommended for anyone on any of the northern spiritual paths. If you love the gods/goddesses of the north and have a spiritual practice involving them then do yourself a favour and read this book. Warning though, it is best to ignore the stuff about Loki and the Etins in here.

Amazing....simply amazing. 19 février 2012

This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I consider myself Rokkatru, a devoted Loki's-woman and humble student of the Jotnar, and I adore the fact that this book included devotionals for, prayers to, and a good deal of information about my fulltrui and his beloved second wife Sigyn. It is well written, informative, and gives a wide view of the Northern Traditions from both Reconstructionist and Reconstructionist-derived sides of the coin. It is a welcome, and now loved addition to my library. I will be ordering the other books from Raven and his kith in the future. Hail and blessings to the authors! May the Gods favor you and your kin!

I am only going so far as to say I am a Pagan of European decent, personally I find this work excellent. 24 janvier 2014

It certainly is not a beginner’s book on Asatru, or Heathenry, or any specific denomination of religious practices covered under a label of Norse or Germanic religion. It is however a great beginner’s book on religious practices regardless of what, if any, specific tradition is calling to the individual. For many people that are just beginning the process of discovering their own spiritual way, and in my opinion this is a must if there is to be any hope of authenticity, the information and conversations contained in this work are a great value to them. After all, it seems to me that deep contemplation upon what we value should come first in any endeavor.

The book stresses development of working practices and relationships with the numinous in the universe at large. One would expect that in a book about religious practice after all. And even though specific Goddesses and Gods are mentioned they are not presented in any rigid dogmatic or requisite manner. There are no commandments just hints. It challenges the ego, it challenges beliefs, and stresses spiritual work which from experience can be hard to do. The work requires personal reflection and exploration, self honesty, and an openness to change, which in my own view demonstrates a very nice example of how the universe itself seems to function.

Some will find controversy here. As can be seen in previous reviews and comments some will find great controversy here. This is not surprising as any conversation related to religion or politics for that matter generally stirs up such things.

I like the prayer work and have begun to form my own set of tools in the form of personally authored prayers captured in my own journal. They need to be meaningful to me and that which I seek connection with. The section on sets of prayer beads has caused me to revisit my own personal beliefs and previous rejection of them as a Christian tool (I was wrong) due to my own rebellion from a Christian upbringing. I see their abstract value as placeholders for meaning that I give to them. This realization has triggered a renewed review of that process as well. I will do well to know myself as deeply as I possibly can.

I'm about finished with my first pass through the book and will surely read through it again. I recommend this book and more importantly the work of discovery it aims the individual towards to all open minded and honest spiritual seekers. It's not just for Sunday breakfast any more.

I wish you good luck and growth on your journey through this life, and any that may follow.

Mixed feelings. 19 février 2013

You can definitely see the passion of the writers in this book . They clearly care alot for the subject matter. however , all the love in the world cannot compensate for blatant errors. I'll not spend time tearing in to the book , as several reviewers have already done this. But what I can say for it , however , is that with critical reading skills and a solid basis in the Eddas and the lore , one can glean several tidbits of insight and a few decent ideas. I can't , in good conscience , recommend this to a neophyte. Even for more advanced readers , keep a copy of the Eddas close at hand while reading .
