5.0 étoiles sur 5 Definitive, succinct and a great read!-Buy this book! 6 juillet 2009
Par L. Eckian - Publié sur
Exciting, fun and a must-read! As a massage therapist who has worked with many pregnant clients,
I have found Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy to be the best resource available to support that work.
Focused in content and design, the book is easy to follow, highly detailed and researched, with great care.
There are photos and drawings that really bring the work to life. This book is a live, experiential document with video
content online that is connected to specific techniques in the book.
Seeing these techniques being practiced has really increased my confidence. I have all the
pregnancy massage books that are available, including the latest new
texts, and this book, without question is clearly superior. Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy is
required reading for anyone working with pregnant clients.

The book helps you understand what is going on physiologically,
emotionally, spiritually, and pathologically during pregnancy so that
you can make informed decisions about what kind of touch is
appropriate depending on the client's condition, and confirms that at
least some sort of touch--even if it is just to rub a shoulder or hold
a hand-- is appropriate at any time of pregnancy, labor, postpartum,
no matter what risk condition they may have, while helping you
understand what kind of precautions you may need to take or consider.

The author has worked as a labor and delivery nurse, teaches a
maternity massage certification course, and has made several films
about touch, pregnancy and birth, so her information is up to date,
based in vast amount of experience and research, and to-the-point.

As a massage therapist who specializes in pregnancy, labor and postpartum massage, I've read many different texts guiding LMTs in massaging pregnant clients, and I believe this is the best book available! The photographs and easy-to-follow explanations provide information that is useful to any bodyworker, from recent graduates to therapists seasoned in pregnancy massage. This book helped me to better understand pregnant women's physical and emotional experience as it relates to touch and taught me several new techniques for supporting women through the quickly-evolving, radical changes of pregnancy. I love that the book is evidence-based and dispels many of the fear-based myths surrounding pregnancy massage--while it is educational on the topic of contraindications, the focus is definitely on all the support you can give a pregnant client. Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy also helped me to offer mamas-to-be lots of proactive tips for relieving discomfort and preparing for labor that they can do outside of our massage sessions. If you want to be comfortable massaging the occasional pregnant client who comes your way, if you specialize in maternity massage, and definitely if you are teaching a pregnancy massage class, I HIGHLY recommend this text.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Not just for bodyworkers 2 juillet 2013

I have a point of contention with both the author and the publisher of this book--they present it primarily as a text for massage therapists and students, and in doing so I think they are overlooking a large group of people who could benefit greatly from the book. Sure, it is first and foremost a practitioner's guide and training workbook, and according to my wife (a massage therapist for 18 years) it is a very good one. It is chock-full of guidance on techniques to strengthen and provide comfort during pregnancy, along with support for the birthing process and the postpartum period.

Yet there is so much more to this book--what draws me, a male with only a tad of massage experience, to it is the wealth of knowledge it imparts on the living experience of pregnancy and birth. Women have told me that giving birth is a transformational event in their lives, and some have said that their pregnancies provided the contemplative preparation. Yet I, being gender challenged, could not get a visceral feel for what they were expressing. This book offered me a window. In addition, I wanted an intimate understanding of things they were talking about, such as the discomforts associated with a baby's quickening and the complexities of lower back pain. Again, this book gave me insight and perspective.

I would like to propose a parallel title: Pregnancy Consciousness for Family and Friends. I know: a two-titled titled book is impractical, yet it is the only option I can come up with to let prospective readers know about the precious book within this book. If you are a therapist--and especially if you are pregnant--please share this book with the people you love.

If you are visually oriented like me, I'd suggest picking up the MotherTouch videos, by the same author. They are great complements to the book, no matter which title you prefer.

Leslie has great knowledge! If you have the chance take her classes along with this book. You won't be disappointed. :) I very much enjoyed her class and I am now much more confident in prenatal massage.

This book.... I wish I had it back when I was at school! For once, a book that reads like a book and not a text book and really gets into all aspects of pregnancy! It's focus was not only on the mechanics of it but the nurturing side of it, the spiritual side and the clinical side. I have aspirations of becoming a Midwife and this book has helped me so much in taking those closer steps to helping my clients through all aspects of their miracle.

I really loved how easy it was to share with my clients, to help them fully understand our goals. It has greatly helped my mothers and infants, in knowing what to expect and from that have experienced a greater connection with one another and more trust in their therapy. Thank you Leslie Stager!!!! BRAVO!
