HASH(0x9d6cd8f4) étoiles sur 5 Lloyd-Jones is a Worthy Successor to Beecham as a Delian 14 avril 2004
Par J Scott Morrison - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
In 1997 David Lloyd-Jones conducted a different program of Delius orchestral (and vocal) music that included the early 'Florida Suite' and the final scene of his American opera 'Koanga.' It was with a different orchestra, the English Northern Philharmonia, and it was very good, very natural-sounding. I wondered at the time - perhaps 'hoped' is a better word - if this might be the beginning of a Delius series on the Naxos label. Well, here it is seven years later and another program of Delius orchestral music with Lloyd-Jones at the helm, this time of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Indeed, the ten works on this disc are recorded in chronological order, beginning with the 'Marche Caprice' (which I'd never heard) from 1889 and leading on to his very last piece, 'Fantastic Dance,' premièred only four months before his death in 1934. (I'd also never heard this piece. Shame on me!)
In between these two not-so-well-known pieces are some of his loveliest creations. There are the 'Three Small Tone Poems,' each named for a season: 'Summer Evening,' 'Winter Night,' 'Spring Morning.' There was originally a fourth piece called 'Autumn,' but it seems to be lost. These works, from the same time period as the early 'Marche Caprice,' confirm that Delius from early on was able to limn the characteristics of nature as well as any English composer ever has.
'American Rhapsody' is a shorter version of the later 'Appalachia' and does not contain a choral section. But it does contain worksongs from the African American workers whom Delius heard singing when he was in Florida running a family-owned orange plantation. It also includes extensive treatments of 'Dixie' and 'Yankee Doodle.' The piece was never performed as written until the 1980s.
'The Walk to the Paradise Garden,' from his opera, 'A Village Romeo and Juliet,' is, of course, one of Delius' most loved compositions. It is given a meltingly beautiful reading here. Following that are 'Two Pieces for Small Orchestra,' containing the vastly familiar 'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring' and then the somewhat less-heard 'Summer Night on the River.' I was not aware until reading the excellent booklet notes by Hugh Priory that 'Cuckoo' quotes a Norwegian folksong that had also been used by Grieg. Again, Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra do themselves proud. In fact, I don't know if I've ever heard a lovelier 'Cuckoo' either in concert or on recording. And that includes Beecham's famous recording. Simply splendid!
The CD is rounded out by 'A Song Before Sunrise,' written in 1918, the last of Delius' nature studies. 'Fantastic Dance,' dictated to Delius' amenuensis Eric Fenby after he became incapacitated, is rather more spirited than any of the foregoing and is a fitting close to this entirely glorious concert.
This is an impressive program well-played and -recorded, and all the more so when one considers the budget price.
Enthusiastically recommended.
Scott Morrison

HASH(0x9d5ca3fc) étoiles sur 5 Superb performances, and a splendid release 17 juillet 2012
Par G.D. - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is a splendid disc of miniatures, mixing the well known with the relatively unfamiliar. To start with the former, The Walk to the Paradise Garden receives a beautiful performance; the music flows naturally without compromising the aching, rapturous quality of the music. The strings are full-bodied and the winds, especially the woodwinds, superb. A Song before Sunrise is similarly superbly done, and the Two Pieces for Small Orchestra are as atmospheric and evocative as one could hope for. The Fantastic Dance was Delius's last orchestral work (completed with the help of Eric Fenby), and it is another affective miniature if perhaps not among the composer's most immediately memorable utterances; I would say the same for the March Caprice - though both receive simply magnificent performances.

Of the Three Small Tone Poems the first, Summer Evening, is familiar; a hazily, dreamy, wistful and deeply compelling miniature. The second is given its original title, Winter Night, though it is perhaps better known as Sleigh Ride; a glittering, shimmering piece of tone painting that has, despite its relatively short duration, always struck me as being a minute too long. The third piece, Spring Morning, is virtually unknown, however, having remained unpublished until the 1980s. Delians will know what to expect, and I can assure them that this is first-rate Delius - a delectable, deeply atmospheric work, and no one quite manage to express these impressions of nature, seasons and sunlight as evocatively as Delius. The American Rhapsody is another rarity; it was later to be expanded and revised into Appalachia, but is a compelling (if a rather different piece) in its original form - especially the opening minutes (some may express justifiable qualms about the use of typical "American" tunes later on, though it is very well done).

Hence, although this might superficially look like a standard collection of Delius miniatures, it really isn't, and given performances as wonderful as these it is a must-have not only to committed Delians; the rarities range from the interesting to the marvelous, and even in the "standard" items the performances here are competitive with the best. The sound is very fine s well.

HASH(0x9d6ffa2c) étoiles sur 5 Delectable Delius 19 octobre 2014
Par James B. Vaughan - Publié sur Amazon.com

GORGEOUS. David Lloyd-Jones is a superlative exponent of Delius' orchestral works. Everything on this recording is given a first-rate rendering--some of Delius' best known pieces such as "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring" as well as some rarities not found on (m)any other compilations. The recorded sound is FANTASTIC. I own a very expensive high-end system, and believe me, this is one of the best-sounding CDs in my collection. It easily vies in sound quality with the most expensive imported labels, including the "Hybrids" and the "Super Audio" CDs, yet is only half the listed price of those. "The Walk to the Paradise Garden" is given the most rhapsodic performance I have ever heard. This CD makes both an excellent introduction to Delius for those who are just discovering his works, and will also please the most fastidious of longtime Delius connoisseurs. Don't pass this up!

This often overlooked composer brings spring and summer to life, whether it's the dead of winter or the furnace of summer.

I am a Delius fan since I started looking into English classical music. Along with Ralph Vaughn Williams, this music is very peacefuland melodic. This particular cd I purchased for the 3 small tone poems that is included therein. It was a good purchase.
