Description de l'ouvrage

13 décembre 2011
Offshore wind is the new blue horizon for Alternative Energy. One small offshore wind farm can produce more power than a whole coal plant, or a nuclear reactor. However, very few people have real experience getting an offshore wind farm up and running. This book is the first-ever roadmap to successful offshore wind installation. It provides a ready reference for wind project managers, teaching them how to deal with complications on-site, as well as for financers, who can utilize the text as an easy guide to asking the pivotal questions of petitioning wind project developers, whose planning stages will be improved by the book's expert advice on how to avoid wasting money by scoping out and mitigating potential problems up-front. Wind turbine manufacturers will benefit from insights into design optimization to support cheaper installation and hauling, thereby incurring lower project costs, and helping developers establish a quicker route to profitability. The book sheds light not just on HOW to solve a particul installation difficulty, but delves into WHY the problem may best be solved in that way. Readers will learn not just how to build successful offshore wind farms, but how to do so in the most safe and economical way possible.

  • Enables all stakeholders to achieve cheaper, faster and safer offshore wind project
    realization
  • Explains the different approaches to executing on- and offshore projects, highlighting the
economic impacts of the various financial and operational choices
  • Provides practical, proven advice on how tough challenges can be overcome,
using real-life examples from the author's experiences to illustrate key issues

Revue de presse

"Intended as an essential reference, this book adopts the style of an in-depth technical seminar, discussing the major milestones of an offshore wind project, highlighting planning considerations, providing guidelines for anticipating potential difficulties, and sharing expert advice on solving challenges in the most efficient and safe way possible. The intention of the book is to create a robust basis for understanding the offshore wind farm industry. The author expresses the hope that, after having read the book, the reader will have an in-depth understanding of the offshore wind farm industry. The book is intended to help the reader make informed decisions on how to map out the main planning and execution route for an offshore wind farm project."--Mechanical Engineering Magazine, June 2012

Biographie de l'auteur

Kurt Thomsen is the mastermind whose innovative ideas effectively invented functional offshore wind farms. A construction designer by profession, until he developed and patented the world's first "crane ship”, there was no way to successfully transport and install wind turbines at sea. He has founded 4 successful companies which have successfully installed 1000+ wind turbines in the waters around Denmark, Sweden and Great Britain. The world's largest wind turbine manufacturers, including Vestas and Gamesa, work with Mr. Thomsen to develop new turbine designs that better enable productivity in marine conditions. His current company, Advanced Offshore Solutions, has developed technology that enables the transport of 18 wind turbines simultaneously, and can complete installation of the lot within 24 hours. A highly sought-after conference speaker and consultant, Mr. Thomsen has also edited and translated technical books in English, German, Norwegian and Danish, and is a contributing columnist for Cranes Today magazine.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Competent "how to" overview for offshore wind 31 décembre 2011

Kurt Thomsen is the architect/crane operator who spent the past ten years installing offshore wind turbines in the waters surrounding Denmark. This book is Thomsen's effort to distill the knowledge he gained in that experience gained in the birth time of offshore wind down into a usable overview. It serves as a sort of "best management practices" document, a how-to manual intended to answer the major questions that would arise in the process of planning, installing, and maintaining an offshore wind farm in real world conditions. Safety, financial considerations, and environmental concerns are all addressed, and the photographs and index are useful. But at only 300 odd pages, it is probably not detailed enough to create an expert from scratch.

This book is NOT intended to serve as an exploration of the role of renewable energies such as wind in fighting global warming. There is no material on the politics of energy here, as it assumes that the reader is beyond that and simply wants guidance on getting the job done. As a non-engineer, some of this material went over the head of this reader, but Thomsen does come across as a knowledgeable person with good advice to share. While pricey, this book would be required basic reading for anyone intending to be involved in the actual operation of the offshore wind industry. After all, buying this book would be a bargain if it resulted in avoiding a million-dollar design, engineering, or safety error!
4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good starting point for the study of offshore wind farms and the challenges presented when they go up 12 mai 2013

Alternative energy is one of the key terms of the 21st Century, yet very few people stop to consider how these systems get implemented. Kurt Thomsen's "Offshore Wind: A Comprehensive Guide to Successful Offshore Wind Farm Installation" is exactly what its name implies - it is a very thorough study on the challenges and opportunities presented by the development of offshore wind farms. Terrestrial farms have their own issues, but nothing like the kinds of engineering and environmental difficulties that rise up like an ocean tide to slow the progress of these remarkably efficient offshore generators. Thomsen isn't targeting the casual reader with this book; rather, he is focused on the real-world (and sometimes highly technical) challenges that organizations have to overcome in order to derive the ROI possible from an offshore farm. If you're part of one of those organizations, then this is required reading.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not for a curious reader, but lots of detail 5 avril 2013

This is only one reader's opinion...

Sometimes when topics are heavily discussed in the news, one wants to read more about it.

Renewable energy is a hot topic. After driving past countless land-based wind turbines during two consecutive summer road trips, I saw this book and was curious. I'd hear about offshore windfarming on NPR shortly before.

I didn't find this book to be very accessible to the average curious reader. Clearly suited as an assigned text for the academic setting, but not one that would carry the interest of a person only slightly less than ignorant of the subject. It reminded me of one of the books that gets referenced in a more digestible read.

Informative, not accessible.
