Présentation de l'éditeur

Finalist, 2014 Readers Favorite Book Awards and National Indie Excellence Awards.
Weary of Cold War politics, CIA operative Gabriel Haines can’t wait to leave the Company life for a job on his friend’s isolated Texas ranch. All he needs to do is go to Dallas and seal the deal. But when President John F. Kennedy is assassinated just yards from where Haines stands, the former agent finds himself in tighter crosshairs than ever before. Keeping a low profile on the ranch couldn’t come at a better time.

Motherless preteen Ivy Jean Pritchard is a worrier, but she’s trying hard not to be suspicious when her father sends her to spend the weekend on a ranch with family she’s never met. And with her troublemaker teenaged cousin, high-society aunt, and her uncle’s mistress on the scene, it promises to be more than the western adventure Ivy had anticipated.

Now, marksmen have tracked Haines to the ranch, getting the entire family involved in something very adult and very worrisome. When the weekend turns deadly, Haines and Ivy Jean are the first to learn that secrets, especially those devised and perpetuated “for the good of us all,” can breakdown a family—or a nation—in the blink of an eye.

The book starts with the assassination of JFK and spies abd CIA. And all the thrill stops there. The whole story revolves around the very common stories of a "lady lover" of an important person , the discovery of pot and alcohol of a teen, and the chase to find the missing "lady lover" , except the reader knows from the beginning where she is located and why.
Everything is predictable, and sheds no light on the tragic end of a famous president.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Otherwise good story takes on too much 6 décembre 2013

This book attempts to blends two separate stories: The assassination of President Kennedy and the lives of fictional characters with connections to the tragic event and the political aftermath.

The Prologue, which dealt with the assassination and introduction of some of the fictional characters, seemed to lack flow. The sentences were rather short resulting in a choppiness that made the storyline hard to follow. The flow and pace picked up after a couple of chapters when the story mainly focused on the lives of WW2 friends CIA-operative Haines and Dallas attorney Tucker, friends and families. This story was uncomplicated but rather enjoyable and fast-paced containing some factual information such as racial tension in the South and information on the investigation into the death of the President and Lee Harvey Oswald. The fictional characters were well developed. There was also "inside" information on real characters such as JFK and LBJ which was likely true but in a book of fiction, could only be confirmed by a reader with better than average knowledge of that period in history.

Although the action that transpired in the fictional story was attributed to events on the day of the assassination, it just did not make a smooth connection. The book might have been more successful, in this reviewer's opinion, by maintaining Haines' life as a CIA operative but eliminating the connection to the assassination. Also, the activities and predicaments of Haines' friend Tucker could have done well on its own; again without attributing them to the assassination or Tucker's family ties to Lyndon B. Johnson. The author could still have made reference to the assassination and other issues of the time such as racial tension and Vietnam, of which she clearly has knowledge but just not have tried to meld the two into one story.

Despite the above critique, this was not a bad book at all. The author appears to have talent but just seems to have taken on a major challenge for what appears to be her first book. The target audience is not clear because it seems a different reader would be interested in the material dealing with the assassination as compared to those who would enjoy this particular fictional story that deals with an unwanted pregnancy and family discord. This thought may be attributed to the easy-reading level once out of the Prologue. The book probably will appeal more to the person who enjoys light fiction rather than a reader with an intense interest in the events around the assassination.

Riveting storytelling, watching a family discover their roots while their relatives lives are falling apart relates to a bit of all our families.
The end will catch you off guard, even if you think you know how it will end.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Dallas, JFK assassination, Coming of Age 12 octobre 2013
Par JBKing - Publié sur Amazon.com
Adrienne LaCava has crafted a completely riveting story of Ivy Jean, a motherless pre-teen in Central Texas, whose life is catapulted in one weekend into a world of intrigue, excitement and fear. The JFK murder and unwitting involvement by a former CIA operative, now a ranch manager, is expertly woven into Ivy Jean's coming of age with a family she doesn't know, an unexpected tie to her dead mother and a surprise ending.

Those of us from Dallas, Texas will recognize the syntax, phrases and social mores common to our State. LaCava captures the feelings of confusion, fear, secrecy and turmoil of that fateful day, November 22, 1963, as well as the fallout surrounding it. A nation in disarray is reflected in her brilliantly wrought characters and their own personal discoveries.

I find myself wondering about these people and their lives, after finishing this fine first novel. Do yourself a favor and buy this book!

Adrienne LaCava I have finished your book No One Can Know and, of course, my first comment is PLEASE TELL ME YOU ARE WORKING ON A SEQUEL. I have to follow Ivy Jean as well as Haines and the rest of your characters. You did a great job in creating characters that we don't want to say goodbye too. Excellent job and definitely worth the wait.
