Présentation de l'éditeur

The Pan of Hamgee needs answers, although he’s not even sure he knows the questions.
He has a chance to go straight but it’s been so long that he’s almost forgotten how. Despite a death warrant over his head he is released, given a state-sponsored business, and a year’s amnesty for all misdemeanours while he adjusts. On the down side, Ruth has left him for his nemesis, Lord Vernon.
The Pan doesn’t have a year, either. In only five days Lord Vernon will gain total power and destroy K'Barth. Unless The Pan can stop him. Because even though the Candidate, the person prophesied to save K'Barth, has finally appeared it's still going to be down to The Pan to make things right. But he has no clue where to start or whether he even can.
The future hangs by a thread and the only person who can fix it is The Pan: a man without a plan.

This book is written in British English with a little light swearing. Suggested film rating: PG.
This book is the third in a series and works best read in order, after the first two.

Q – So, tell us about the K’Barthan Series. What made you write it? What makes it special?

A – K’Barth hasn’t always been called ‘K’Barth’ but it’s been with me since I can remember. My brain has always been off with the fairies and I suppose it was only a matter of time before I began to write about where it went. Once I started, it was the readers’ response to the characters, especially to the hero and heroine: The Pan of Hamgee and Ruth Cochrane, which kept me going. The Pan of Hamgee is an anti hero; someone who is aware of the risks he is taking and human – ie scared – about being brave. A lot of teenage boys like him and he has as many fans among the girls, and their mums. In Ruth I wanted to create someone pragmatic, sensible and grounded. She’s not going to lose a shoe and fall over, so the hero has to go back and help her, and they both get caught by the monster. She’s a strong female protagonist who is a bit more of a hero than The Pan, frankly – to start with at any rate. I think he catches her up as the story unfolds.

Q – Do our readers have to read the K’Barthan Series in order?

A – Yes. The character development – and some of the technology – will make the most sense if they do. That said, the short story prequel can be read any time. They go in this order:

- Unlucky Dip, K'Barthan Series: Prequel
- Few Are Chosen, K'Barthan Series: Part 1
- The Wrong Stuff, K'Barthan Series: Part 2
- One Man: No Plan, K'Barthan Series: Part 3
- Looking For Trouble, K'Barthan Series: Part 4

Q – What will readers enjoy most about The K'Barthan Series?

A – Hopefully, the same things as I do: I hope they will like the laughs, the romance, the fast pace and the action – especially the flying car chases – and I hope they will like its deeper side.

Q – What is your favourite kind of Book? Would The K'Barthan Series fit on the list?

A – I love the British humorous tradition of witty fantasy and sci fi: people like Pratchett, Holt, Fforde and Adams, especially Adams. These guys have always written the top sci fi and fantasy books for me. They make me laugh out loud but think as well. I guess I’m a sucker for any book that has that mixture of seriousness and theatre of the absurd going on. I also like it if the characters are people I’d hang out with – well, except for the bad guys I like to loathe them with a passion.

Q – Do you have a target reader?

A – Officially it’s teenagers. It’s certainly proving popular with teens and young adults and I had my teenage nephew in mind when I wrote them. However, I firmly believe that all the best books for teenagers appeal equally to their parents, so I also wrote it for me. So far – if the people who write to me are anything to go by – it appeals to a certain type of person across the board. The oldest fan of the series I know of is in his 90s and the youngest is 10.

Q – Thanks for giving our readers a look inside The K'

5.0 étoiles sur 5 More introspective 24 juin 2014

I assume readers of this review have read the first two books in the excellent K'Barthan series but if you haven't I'll try to make sure that I don't spoil either of those for you. The villainous Lord Vernon is determined to declare himself The Candidate and marry The Chosen One. She, however, is in love with The Pan of Hamgee – form a queue behind me! Actually, I have a thing for the Thing. Big Merv, the Swamp Thing. On with the review!

This book is more introspective than the earlier two which were full of action. Here we deal with motivations and feelings. Ruth is asked to choose between her own happiness and the life of the person she loves. She has to be convincing so he must believe she doesn't love him. There are some heartrending passages here. It's horrible but it's beautifully done. The Pan pulls things together towards the end, then steps out to meet his fate. I won't be the only one hardly daring to breathe till we find out what happens in Book 4.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 MT McGuire is a fine story teller 1 septembre 2014

I bought this book and book four, 'Looking For Trouble'a little while ago, but then took them on holiday with me last week. This meant that I had time to read them, and of course could finish the story.
MT McGuire is a fine story teller, the story moves along nicely and certainly gripped me and kept me turning the pages.
I also loved the characters. The author has assembled a collection of fascinating people, they're people you really want to know more about, and who you end up caring about.
I'm not going to say more because I don't want to give anything away. Just to say that I highly recommend not merely this book but all four of them. I believe the first book, 'Few are chosen' is down a free download so I'd recommend you go and download it now.

This installment of the series gives a much deeper understanding of the characters. The physical descriptions of some may sound like something you would win at a carnival game, but that's just the outside. They are complex, interesting, fast thinking, fast moving, and, sometimes, thick-headed. They sound pretty real don't they? This isn't to say that anything I love about the series is missing. There is still plenty of action, irony and humor. This book allows some truly awful things happen to the characters though. It's not all silliness. Although there is the chicken.

M T McGuire never disappoints. The first two books in the K'Barthan series I likened to Douglas Adams, but in this book M T McGuire really comes into her own. Brilliantly written, nicely paced, it was a real pleasure to read. I enjoyed it so much I bought the fourth one as soon as I finished the last chapter. Indie publishing at its best.
