Failed to meet my high expectations 26 mars 2003
Par A reader - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This was a pretty good book, but a lot of the 1,001 "secrets" left a lot to be desired. Most of the info was simple common sense. Didn't much care for the author's arrogance, either. Be advised that this is a fairly expensive book, considering what you get for your money.

Sort of an Update of "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" 12 octobre 2000
Par Un client - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The format and layout is similar to "Tao of JKD" but also covers weapons, including handguns. Offers some (about 300 "secrets") useful "concepts/principles" but if you are expecting instruction on techniques, you'll be disappointed. Many (another 600 "secrets") of the 1001 "secrets" are really so obvious that readers will find themselves saying-"duh." The rest of the so called street-fighting principles (that leaves 101) are just the author's recitation of his political philosophy. All in all, not junk, but you'll get more for your money (..."1001 Secrets" is expensive) out of Bruce Lee's original than out of this imitation.

Read it again and again 30 septembre 2000
Par Loren w Christensen - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This is one of those books you can go back to over and over and find some concept, technique or drill that you can incorporate into your own training. Franco teaches and trains for street self-defense and as such, some of his offerings in this book might surprise those martial artists who train only for competition karate. Yes, street fighting and tag karate are not the same.
It's a wonderful, well-written book, a text that you will get something from every time you thumb through it.

Did Tyr Shadowblade Even Read This Book? 7 mars 2007
Par James M. Mcgarvey - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The first thing I thought of when I read this review was that this guy did not even read the book. He gives a bunch of untrue statements about the author, but does not speak about the content of the book. This is nothing more then a personal attack against Mr. Franco and certainly not a review of the material that this book contains.

First, I actually read the book and I did not see any pictures of Mr. Franco sparring with a pistol or a knife, except when he was talking about gun and knife defense. It would not be very realistic to teach weapon defense when you are unarmed. As for the reviewer's other comments, such as what kind of music Mr. Franco listens too when he trains. Who really cares? I happen to like Billy Idol, but if you don't then listen to whatever you want. Maybe, "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is more up your alley. The point is to listen to something that is really upbeat, because this type of music is more conducive to hard training.

Second, the picture of Mr. Franco and his dog looks fine to me. I do not even know why the reviewer would even stoop so low to go after a man and his dog. I happen to love animals and I believe that it is of low character to even mention something like that in a book review. This is an awesome book that has a wealth of information on what it takes to win a real fight when someone is after your life.

"Evil Must Be Vanquished", you asked what the heck that is? Well, that is a true statement. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"--Philosopher Edmund Burke. Mr. Franco is a good man that has dedicated his life to helping people fight back against evil that is very real in the world we live in. Next time you want to do a book review, stick to the content, because the author of this book is way out of your league.

A great book with valuable and useful information for anyone interested in street self-defense. 2 août 2009
Par Joseph J. Truncale - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I sometimes find it amusing to read critical reviews of martial art and self-defense books. Since complex self-defense moves with too many steps do not work in real life combat, why would anyone write a practical self-defense instruction manual with complicated techniques? The vast majority of the techniques, tactics and information in this great text are simple and basic. To say that "anyone knows this basic information" is living in a dream world. Most people, including those involved in the martial art and self-defense fields, should always review "basic techniques." This book was well-written and the techniques and tactics are easy to follow. This is a book for anyone who is open minded and interested in learning how to defend themselves.

Rating: 4 stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton).
