Présentation de l'éditeur

Mary Burke, a beautiful woman trapped in a loveless marriage, gets on with life in neutral Ireland until one day the war comes crashing down on her doorstep when a B17 bomber makes a forced landing in West Cork.

Based on the actual landing of B17 bomber “T’Aint a Bird” during WWII, "Only a Paper Moon" is an enthralling story of unexpected love.

“Who did he think he was, dropping out of a plane like that, with his fancy ways, singing to her about Paper Moons?”

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent first novel 17 octobre 2001

A romance through and through!!!
I really enjoyed this novel and was surprised that it was Christina's first attempt. When is the next one?
I am from Ireland myself and so found it easy to get into the thick West Cork lingo that Christina uses. I wonder though, could this perhaps be a hinderence to those who are not from the Emerald Isle or know very little about it?
I laughed, almost cried, but most of all was entranced. I just couldn't put the book down.
The characters are fantastic and what an awsome ending to a heart rendering story.
Christina, get writing girl !!!! We want more. 'OK,so.'

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Wonderfully charming debut 1 décembre 2012

This is a story you might expect to read from a much more seasoned author but Tina Pisco's debut is absolutely rich with color and characters. Her writing captures the essence of the rural Irish community and took me back to my own travels in the region. While she develops her main characters thoroughly, Pisco does an excellent job of giving the reader a good feel for the supporting cast. She incorporates elements of drama, suspense, and humor in enough proportion and in a timely manner that the pace feels perfectly right. This was a story that has you laughing one moment and choked up the next.

You don't have to be a fan of the period or the region to really enjoy this wonderful story. If you appreciate a good love story or solid fiction with the right blend of elements then you'll want to read Pisco's debut, Only a Paper Moon. It captures the charm of the region and the people of southern Ireland - that quality alone is worth 4.2 stars.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A story that touches the heart 7 août 2001

Unfortunately I have to start my review with a stereotype phrase; I just loved it!
Why? Simply because, reading it, I was in Ireland, even if I have never been there, at a different time of ours. I really became a part of the story as if I was there watching it and following its developments.
It is my modest opinion that the simplicity of Pisco's writing travels you lightly to the core of the facts she reels off on the paper giving life to it.
Although I prefer not to reveal the end, I must say that it has really left me a lot to think and wondering what If?
Congatulations Christina Pisco! Your big step to go and live in Ireland, especially to write this book as trully as possible, really paid off.
You see, when a few lines on a white paper make you sometimes cry, then it is worth it.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Lovely and touching story 11 juillet 2013

As stated in the product description, this is a semi-fictional account of the events surrounding the crash-landing of a B-17 Super Fortress in Ireland during WWII. Thrown off course by a violent storm, their navigational instruments gone wacky, the airmen did not know where they were. With only three minutes of fuel left, it was a miracle that they found a shoreline, and a beautiful, flat, lush green field. Only moments before, they had been facing the almost certain death that would come from ditching in the ocean. Afraid they were in enemy territory, they landed, opened the door, and saw a man approaching:

"Les...pulled out his revolver and faced the man. Slowly the man raised his arms.
'Do you speaking English?' yelled Les.The man looked incredulous and confused. His hands remained in the air.
'Do you speak English? Do you understand?' Les repeated slowly. 'Where are we?'
'Ye'er in Paddy White's bog.' said the man. ....'And from the look of it, ye're sinking in it. And so's ye'er plane.'
Les started to laugh."

The Irish villagers welcome the crew with open arms. The book features rich characterizations - the villagers and the crew members come to life. The focus is on the intense relationship that springs up between Mary Burke, the abused farm wife, and Beauregard St Soucis, native of New Orleans. Mary's husband Gerald is a brutal beast. He is away from home on shady business when the plane comes down. The unconscious Beau, having sustained a concussion during the landing, is taken to Mary's house. One just knows that if Gerald finds out that a man, even an injured man, spent the night at his house, alone with his wife, there will be hell to pay for Mary.

A second thread follows Les Wagner, 18 years old, from Wisconsin, and Imelda, 15 years old, a Traveller whose people are camped at the edge of the bog. Les first sees Imelda when she is standing up, driving the pony cart that will be used to transport the injured Beau to Mary's house. Les is instantly enchanted at this vision from an earlier time. He makes it his business to get to know her.

The writing in this book is a bit rough in spots, and one wishes for a bit more showing and less telling. Nevertheless, this is a great story, and it touched my heart.

Highly recommended.

I loved this book because of the setting in Ireland and because of the World War II period! It might have actually happened that way someday..........And the characters were so real..............
