I bought this book primarily for the photos to aid in the identification of bamboo that I have and in that respect it does not disappoint. The pictures are sharp and well framed. The author avoids being overly technical about the growth habits of bamboo and offers good advice about choosing the various types of bamboo for differing garden situations. I would recommend this book to anyone new to bamboo in need of some guidance.

Excellent reference book with beautiful pictures(comparable to Whitaker's "Taming The Dragon" which I've all but memorized) and for an awesome price, who could ask for more? I could. Am so pleased with this purchase I want another bamboo book. Mmmmmmmm let me see, how about .........

I have all three major books on bamboos. They are all equally good and well written in their own ways. In regards to "Ornamental Bamboos", the author uses his British sense of humor and style to convey his personal experience growing this group of plants. He loves them so much that he quit his job in London and established a nursery. It is fun to read this book and the information is invaluable for any growers in the world. Considering the general climate in England, his experience focuses more on temperate zone growing, which is similar to the book "Hardy Bamboos" by Whittaker, but not as limited. The pictures quality is excellent; some pictures show the details of culms and leaves, but most of them show the whole plants. It is important to know how the bamboos will look like in our gardens. I believe this book is underrated and thus highly recommend this book.
