Scott B. Bomar, album notes writer (Various Artists)
Label: Bear Family

1-CD Digipak (6-plated) with 52-page booklet, 31 tracks. Total playing time approx. 69 mns.

  • This CD collection is devoted exclusively to Bakersfield rockabilly, boogie, hillbilly bop and teen rock!
  • Hear pioneers of country music's Bakersfield Sound like Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Ferlin Husky, Red Simpson, Tommy  Collins, Bill Woods, Billy Mize, Fuzzy Owen, and Herb Henson in their rockin' formative years!
  • Highlights are independent Bakersfield labels, such as Tally, Fire, Grande, Bakersfield Records, Global, Pike, Mosrite, and others.
  • Many of the tracks are released on CD here for the very first time.
  • From established legends like Tommy Duncan and Johnny Bond to collector favorites like Custer Bottoms and Vancie Flowers, this is the story of the non-country influences that shaped the West Coast's country sound.
  • Massive, beautifully illustrated booklets with detailed notes, biographical information, rare photos, and tons of background on the Bakersfield artists and labels who embraced rock 'n' roll on their way to a new kind of country sound.

By the late 1960s Bakersfield, California was a West Coast country music mecca that, thanks to the hits of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, challenged Nashville's dominance of the industry. The so-called Bakersfield Sound first emerged from the clubs of California's Central Valley where oil workers and day laborers went to dance. In stark contrast to the passive experience of sitting and listening to music at the Grand Ole Opry, Bakersfield bands incorp...

Country cool 22 juillet 2014

Well I'm a bongo beating beatnik and I just don't dig rock and roll
Yeah I'm a bongo beating beatnik and I just can't stand rock and roll
When my sweet talking mama says come on daddyo lets go!

So begins the odd song by Joe Hall and the Corvettes (never heard of them? Well neither had I!) Bongo Beating Beatnik. Bear Family Records has compiled a collection of rare rockabilly singles from the hopping musical scene of Bakersfield CA. These singles are very eccentric; the musicians of Bakersfield, almost certainly the children of the Oklahomans who migrated to the San Joaquin valley in the Great Depression, adapted country music to the current trends of rock and roll. The songs are full of references to daddyos and mamas and blue suede shoes.

The music is done in the more country style of rockabilly, somewhat similar to the more upbeat numbers on the Hee-Haw television show. Maybe a term like hillbilly bop is more appropriate for it. This style is upbeat and fun. However, the songs in this collection are not the absolute best in the genre. If you are just exploring this genre, I suggest the wonderful collection From Boppin Hillbilly to Red Hot Rockabilly.

The more influential country songs of the 1950s, sung by artist like Lefty Frizzell and Hank Williams, were songs of heartbreak and woe reflecting the difficulty migrants from rural areas felt in trying to adapt to an urban environment. The classic country blues attitude is completely absent in these Bakersfield songs. These obscure songs reflect the greater American culture in a funhouse mirror. Upbeat, fun and very danceable, the songs manipulate images and ideas from the greater culture without much emotional resonance.

I recognized none of the songs. While some were national hits, none achieved classic status. Two singers from Bakersfield did become superstars, Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, and each is featured here with an early song. Merle Haggard moved away in a major way from his early style with his later work. He was actually born in Bakersfield CA and some of the fury and strength of Okie From Muskogee (2006 - Remaster) seems more understandable when you realize he was a Bakersfield Californian reacting to San Franciscan Californians, not really an Oklahoman at all. Somehow, the Bakersfield version of 1950s America is simultaneously light years away from the San Francisco of Lawrence Ferlinghetti and right next door.

All and all, this is a fun compilation of rare country bop singles, lovingly curated by Bear Family records. The remastering for CD is superb and the linear notes are informative and well written. Ultimately though the songs recycle cliches and are more curiosities than really strong songs standing on their own. I feel if you are a rockabilly collector, this is an essential set for you. If like me you just really enjoy old country music, you will enjoy this CD, but it won't be one of your absolute favorites.

No hit's in Vol # 1 but good stuff. Must of been tuff making a living in those days with music.
All about the farming in that area. Much better than "todays" country which isn't really country,
Pop country is my title.

Another side to The Bakersfield Sound 29 juillet 2014
Par Logan Molen - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
It's remarkable how many great but long-forgotten songs were recorded in Bakersfield in the 1950s and 1960s. The two volumes in this anthology are loaded with inspired country, rock 'n' roll and rockabilly, R&B and jump blues, all of which helped influence the more popular country-centric Bakersfield Sound personified by Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Red Simpson. An excellent booklet walks listeners through each song and artist and leaves you hungry for more. Highly recommended.

Comments made in the review of The Other Side Of Bakersfield Vol.2 apply equally to volume 1. Buy both and get a slice of Bakersfield, Calif. in the 1950's. A dirt poor s*** hole with some real good music.
