Paul Gilibert writes not only from a medical point of view, but also from a personal one; he himself knows what it is to suffer from depression. This book is therefore NOT a for or against type of book, or judgemental in any way. It is full of real life examples and has an enormously helpful section of guides to practical application. He is not saying that with his book you won't need a doctor or medication. He IS saying that medication is not always necessary, but that psychotherapy nearly always IS!

I am surprised that this fantastic book has only 1 review. I just found it when I was wandering among the bookshelves in a local book store. As a patient living with depression I am not unfamiliar with cognitive behavioral therapy. I tried it for a while to deal with my anxiety but the book I was using back then was a bit too academic, although Overcoming Depression does use some of the same terminology and techniques.

I think one of the worst parts of depression is the shame associated with admitting that you have something wrong with your thought patterns. Ironically, this kind of thinking spirals in on itself and makes your depression worse. I was grateful to the author for pointing out that animals in captivity can also become depressed for many of the same reasons as humans. He points out the biological and evolutionary causes of depression and offers a very convincing approach to untying the Gordion knot of emotions that come with depression. He mentions self-compassion and a whole body (psycho-bio-social) approach to dealing with your depressive mindset.

Of course not everyone relates to the same author the same way and it could just be that my depression fits his therapy better than other authors. But I can say that I found his writing style to be "highly accessible...very readable and extraordinarily useful" as it says on the jacket cover. Using this book with a good therapist and with or without drugs, I think should help a number of people pull themselves out of the quagmire that is depression.

I must have looked through dozens of books when I was first diagnosed with depression. This one is absolutely the best. Insightful and caring without being swarmy or condescending (why do so many authors treat people with depression like they are children?). You'll see yourself in this book--I know I did.

I had suffered minor depression all my life, and wasn't aware of that. When I have discovered this about myself, I first used medication to pull myself out. But I wanted to learn more and then I run into this book. It is devided to 3 parts: The first, exteremely interesting, gives comprehensive information about depression: what it is (physiological and mental symptoms), and how evolution may have shaped it. The 2nd part teaches you all the techniques you need to pull yourself out of it. you can actually start with this practical part and skip the 1st. The third part deals with special problems associated with depresssion. The 1st great thing about the book, is that a person who is depressed, can use it as a sels-help guide to overcome it, without spending his money on treatments from therpysts, that might be in some cases, useless (especially if they don't practice CBT - the technique this book is about, and as Gilbert says, the only scientificly proven effective). I used it on myself, and can happily say it helped me! It gives you all the information you need to understad your condition, it is easy to understand and the bottom line - very helpful. It still amazes me how CBT can transform your state of mind from hoplessness, and all other symptoms of depression, to a healthy and aware situation, quickly and efficiently.

Tired of wasting your life trapped inside your anxieties. Look no further than this excellent programme to restart your life. It will be difficult in parts but be courageous & you will be rewarded. A book to be read & re-read as needed to hard wire the healing principles, clearly & easily accessible. Say goodbye to depression & welcome in the light.

First, I read the book by Dr. Kolts and I loved it. It was about treating oneself with kindess and forgiving others and myself. I needed that since I was very angry and upset after losing my mom. I was angry at the whole world and i was getting sick. I read the book and it helped me a lot. Dr. Kolts was a studen of Dr. Gilbert, so I thought I would also read his book. I prefer Dr. Kolts' book, but this one is equally informative and very helpful. I think it is important to learn how a person can lead a peaceful and fulfilled life dealing with depression, anger, sensitivity and all issues that we deal in our lives. It is really so simple, but actually very difficult to be kind to onself. I started training my brain that was more inclined towards being negative and upset. I started changing that and my thoughts, so the positive would win over negative. Books are great, though I do believe that talking to a specialist is imperative. If lucky, the counselor will catch what is really bothering us and start working with us.
