This two-volume anthology celebrates four centuries of English poetry, from the Elizabethan era to the present day. This, the second of the two volumes, covers poets from Blake to Heaney, and provides an excellent portrayal of a wide variety of eighteenth to twentieth century poets. The richness and variety of this tradition are represented in this collection by all the great and familiar names, but also some of the less well-known poets who have often provided startling exceptions to the poetry of their age. The result is a rich and multi-coloured tapestry of the depth, diversity, and energy of poetry written in Britain and Ireland. Beginning with William Blake, this second volume, covers many of the Romantic poets (Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Keates). It gives a generous survey of nineteenth century verse, including that of Tennyson, Browning, Hopkins, and Lewis Carroll, with poets from the twentieth-century being represented by poets such as Graves, Betjeman, Larking, Hughes, and Heaney.

John Wain, 1925-94, was an English novelist and critic. He served as professor of poetry at Oxford (1973-8) and wrote or edited more than seventy books. His works include the novels A Winter in the Hills (1970) and The Pardoner's Tale (1978); Letters to Five Artists (1969), poems; and critical studies of Arnold Bennett (1967) and Samuel Johnson (1975).

This is a fantastic collection of poetry from the British isles only poetry can describe. From Blake to Burns to Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, Browning, Rossetti, Tennyson, Yeats, T. S. Eliot to W. H. Auden, the names goes on. All the famous poets from Blake onwards are included, some with a few poems, some with many. It really depends on each's influence and what the editor has picked.
This anthology is not so much a collection for study but rather for general reading or introduction to the various English poets, or for reference. Most of each poets' famous poems are included and it's impossible to list (for each person's preference is different). Still, if you've always wanted to read poems from the English poets, this one's a good start. The variety is astonishing, and it's really fascinating to see how each poet writes in what style.
Not to forget the 'lesser' poets though, there are some lesser known English poets with only one poem assigned to them but the editor picks them well. Like Oscar Wilde's 'Easter Day' for example, you may discover some surprises. It is simply one of the most comprehensive general English poetry collection from the Romantic period onwards. A great collection given that English poetry reached it's zenith during this period.

This Anthology Volume II, a sequel to Volume I, is an affront to the literary.
This text is a work waiting to be finished. Not one single word about authors, nor about historical information, and not even a glossary or a single footnote.
This Anthology is a lame sister publication, and offers no scholarly value.
Oxford University Press needs to tighten up its standards with the likes of John Wain on their staff who has produced a most disapponting book.
How did John Wain manage to get his work into print without passing the usual scrutiny of the Oxford editorial staff?
