Good Book: Bad Quality Control 7 juin 2013
Par haitiman - Publié sur
Format: Broché
I bought the first edition of this book, it was full of errors. O'Reilly was good and sent me the 2nd edition; that book version still had errors. I've reached a point in this book where I simply couldn't get the code to work. I have even tried to download the code from the missing manuals, and it didn't work either. I am sick of having to look through the errata pages to make sure it was something the author mistook or overlooked.

This book suffers from poor quality control. It shouldn't have been released with this many errors. Even the files available for download have errors in them. For example, I had to correct the link to the images in the phpMM.css file for chapter nine.

I am not a novice computer user so imagine how people who are novice users or aspiring PHP coders feel when they can't get something from the book to work correctly.

Buyer beware! Buy this book only if enjoy frustration.

Error Prone 16 juin 2013
Par destum - Publié sur
Format: Broché
While I like to easy to follow method of the book, I would also agree with another review that stated it was full of errors. I just graduated with a minor in Computer Science, so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing. I started with this book just to have a quick and dirty run through of PHP for job interviews. It's almost more of a headache then it's worth to get the code running.

2nd Edition lives up to "The Missing Manual" series 10 mars 2013
Par J. Padgett - Publié sur
Format: Broché
I'm a fan of this O'reilly series, but I avoided the first version of this particular title due to the many negative reviews here and elsewhere. Upon the release of the 2nd Edition, which came within a year (rather quickly in the world of software books), I went ahead and purchased it, hoping the kinks were worked out. I am happy to report that this is a title worthy of the "Missing Manual" moniker.

I wouldn't say this book could server as a primer to PHP/MySQL newbies, but for those who may have read one or more other books on the topic and still feel that there are loose ends or dots that need to be connected, this is an excellent publication.

While some may question the approach of showing how something shouldn't be done before revealing how it should be done, I find this natural for programming. One often explores many paths before deciding on the best solution; working through that thought process is critical to art of programming.

Whereas other tutorial-style books often tend to glaze over supplementary but highly relevant related information, here the author uses callout boxes to shed light on these areas and help the reader understand the larger picture.

The code that accompanies the book can be downloaded from the Missing Manuals website, and is as error-free as I've come across in programming titles. Furthermore, the code is immediately useful in your own projects and is easily adaptable.

My sole issue with the book is that the author spends perhaps a bit too long dwelling on error pages and their necessity, perhaps a lengthy discussion of this topic is more appropriate for a UI or UX book. But that is a minor quibble, as overall this is the best title I've read so far for PHP/MySQL. Well done!

Useless. Can't get PHP to work 29 juin 2014
Par Josh B. Kanownik - Publié sur
Format: Broché
I followed the instructions in the book and I can't get the very first program to run. The web site for the book is worthless (largely due to not having forums which is critical for a programming book). Running the sayHello.php from within PhpED gives me an error on STDIN. I tried running it through the command prompt as directed and my computer can't find PHP. I wasted 30 minutes on the web looking for solutions and nothing helped.

Leave this out of the box please 21 mars 2014
Par Dennis D. Norwood - Publié sur
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
This book is horrible, let's begin by writing some bad code that doesn't work and then forget all the stuff you just read about and let's do it right! No thanks, I write enough bad code on my own, don't need to practice it. Then let's be unclear which segment of code you are talking about. Should have clearly labelled the section of code by it's file name, not make me try and remember or hunt through the code to see what it is. With that being said, the book does makes some interesting points and covers topics that are normally not covered in classes. I'm taking this as a course in script languages and they should have left this manual missing.
