Présentation de l'éditeur

"When I arrived in Hawaii in September, I was more than confident that I could win the Ford Ironman World Championship – or at the very least, a spot on the podium. - I couldn’t help but feel the pressure to deliver a top performance – a lot of people saw me as a medal contender. My 2009 debut in Hawaii
certainly piqued many experts’ interest, placing 5th – with a broken hand, no less."

In the book we follow triathlete Rasmus Henning for a full year in his attempts to win the biggest race in triathlon - The Ironman Hawaii.

We follow him while training, in competition and balancing a family life.

The Great Dane Rasmus Henning has been one of the top male triathletes in the world for over 10 years and recently won the 3rd edition of the prestigious Abu Dhabi International Triathlon - an emphatic win where he ran down Faris Al-Sultan on the 20 km run (3:18/km pace!) to take a great win.

After 8 years of Olympic Distance racing with numerous big results to his name, he swiched back to irondistance racing in 2009 and immediately became a succes. He won Ironman China in April 2009 with a 30 minute margin and qualified for Ironman Hawaii. In August the same year he became European Long Distance Champion and thus became the second male to have won both short and long course European Championships.

After a perfect build up to Ironman Hawaii, Rasmus crashed on his bike 17 days before the race and broke his right hand. He decided to be at the start line anyway despite the broken hand and managed a fifth place finish in his debut in Kona.

In July 2010 came the biggest irondistance result of Rasmus Henning's career: In fashionable style he demolished the run course and ran a 2:39:42 marathon to take the Challenge Roth 2010 title with the fifth best ironman time ever: 7:52:36 hours - only two minutes short of Luc van Lierdes world record from 1997.

He went on to Ironman Hawaii in October as one of the main favourites, only to experience a devastating day of embarrasing mistakes, major misfortunes and huge dissapointment - and ended up in 23rd place.

In 2011 Rasmus struggled with severe cramps in several races during the season. He came into Ironman Hawaii in good shape but only managed to finish 14th on a day where the body didn't co-operate as it should.

His goal for 2012 is the same as always: To become Ironman World Champion in Hawaii this October.

Wow. Thats all I can say about this book. Wow. I went in, expecting it to be your standard autobiography. The author talks about his upbringing, how he discovered the sport, became really good at it, had a minor set back but over came it and then won everything while making it look easy. It would finish with some generic platitudes about "believing in yourself and you can do anything" and would make it sound so simple. Its the same book we've all read 100 times.

This book is way different.

First is the format - it is a daily diary style post in one year of Rasmus' life, from the 2010 Ironman to the 2011 Ironman. At first this may sound boring, but it is not. Because he is frequently racing you it is incredibly suspenseful. Not only because you want to see how he does at each race, but how he will ultimately do in Kona. It is a format that totally works and is totally captivating.

The second thing that makes this book is Rasmus' honesty. When us lowly amateurs think about life as a professional we think it is all excitement, fun and a ton of money. Not so. Rasmus talks openly about how stressful it is to try and manage the demands of his family and the relationship with his wife, while still being competitive. As an amateur this is something I often struggle with: how do I balance my desire to do well in triathlon with also being there for my wife and kids? It was really eye opening and comforting to hear someone else go through this as well. Rasmus is incredibly honest - at one point he says his wife is considering leaving him. I COULD NOT believe how honest he was in this regard - it must have taken a tremendous amount of courage to be so open, but it makes the book so much better to see that other people struggle with balancing the demands of work and life and family and that it is not the cakewalk so many other books point it out to be.

Rasmus also talks about how it is a financial struggle to be a triathlete. Again, this is not something you hear in other typical autobiographies. He has a short career and only gets paid when he places in a race, so there is a tremendous amount of financial instability. I am a small business owner without a guaranteed income as well, so I could really relate to this worry. Again, having someone be so honest and vocalize all this was really comforting to me.

Please take my advice and read this book. It is a very easy read and is a real page turner. You won't be able to put it down. But more than entertainment, it is so valuable because it lets you know that there are other people out there that struggle with the same things that you struggle with - even people who look like they shouldn't have any worries in the world.

Go get it!

On the one hand, you have to admire Rasmus Henning for being so truthful in his warts-and-all account of the life of a pro triathlete. Respect. He achieved what he set out to do with this book.

The downside is that it reads like an angst-ridden account of someone with the weight of the world on the shoulders, not someone with the amazing talent and opportunities that he had. If Rasmus had only possessed a minute amount of the psyche of Macca or Crowie, then we can only imagine what his palmares would have looked like.

If continually self-doubting and blaming your family for you not delivering in a race is chasing the dream, then I'm glad I'm just an amateur. Fortunately I know enough pro triathletes to know that this is the exception rather than the rule.

It's nice to see that a pro's life is not all cupcakes and rainbows. It makes me respect them more.
