Présentation de l'éditeur

Genevieve Bowles is an award-winning songwriter who visits the south of France to attend the Cannes film festival. The day after the renowned festival's closing ceremony, Genevieve is invited to visit the newly-refurbished Hotel Paradise. Genevieve knows the hotel well – in fact, her past life there has haunted her for over a decade...

Twelve years earlier, two travellers have met in Paris. Genevieve dreams of becoming a famous songwriter, while Paul is determined to be a professional photographer. Full of optimism, they hitch south to the Riviera where they answer an advertisement for live-in help at the Hotel Paradise, located on an island just off the French coast. There the young couple are seduced by the tranquility and magical beauty of the hotel and its setting. But the island has a darker side, with a history of bloodshed that fills Genevieve with foreboding. When a stranger arrives who threatens her future with Paul, Genevieve senses that events are about to spin out of control …

Anglo-Irish actress Carol Drinkwater is still well-known for her award-winning portrayal of Helen Herriot in the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small. A popular and acclaimed author and film-maker as well, Carol has published twenty books for both the adult and young adult markets. She is currently at work on her twenty-first title.

When she purchased a rundown property overlooking the Bay of Cannes in France, she discovered almost seventy 400-year-old olive trees. Along with her French husband, Michel, Carol reclaimed the land and began producing top-quality olive oil. Her series of memoirs recounting their experiences on the farm (The Olive Farm, The Olive Season, The Olive Harvest and Return to the Olive Farm) have become international bestsellers, and the related travel books,The Olive Route and The Olive Tree, inspired the five-part documentary film series, The Olive Route.

Carol's first Kindle Single, The Girl in Room Fourteen, reached the number one position in the Singles charts in both the United States and the UK.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - read it in a couple of hours. I'll probably re-read it to enjoy Carol's beautiful prose. Couldn't do that the first time around because it was a page turner and I always want to know what is going to happen, as soon as possible. Being a fan of Carol's other books about the south of France, I am getting to know the area and being the Francophile that I am, it's such a pleasure to read about France which Carol describes it so well. Can't wait until the next one.

If you've ever daydreamed about living in the south of France, or about falling in love while living in the south of France, or about renovating a bedraggled hotel in the south of France, Carol Drinkwater's newest Kindle single opens the door on one woman's fictional experience. As Ms. Drinkwater has actually lived the daydream (she and her husband found and restored a bedraggled olive farm in the hills above Cannes) readers can be sure that the sense of time and place are true. Drinkwater's writing is compelling, as always, The characters are believable and sympathetic (for the most part, until the man strays... ah well, I guess that's believable, if not inevitable, in the south of France), the locale is beautifully rendered and the dream of transforming an old hotel into a welcoming inn is irresistible. A perfect read for travelling, whether on the commuter train, or on a plane to your own dream in the south of France.

This latest from Carol D. was a wonderful surprise find when I was browing Kindle the other day, so I immediately downloaded it. What a lovely short story, only wish it had been much much longer! Beautifully written, the reader could almost be transported straight to Provence. Am sure I could smell it!! Wonderfully descriptive without going overboard with flowery words, it describes Provence as it is. As a child growing up in England, I was lucky enough to spend all my childhood summer holidays there, and only as an adult did I learn to appreciate this. The story itself has a nice twist, as always, but somehow it seemed just right. Thank you again, Carol, for your latest addition to my Kindle library!

In hindsight, it was the theft of a cellphone that brought Genevieve and Paul together and started the whole thing. The two young lovers were ecstatically happy to be in Paris living their dreams: Genevieve to compose music, Paul to hone his skills as a photographer. But the lure of a job working in a small hotel on an island near Cannes was irresistible to the couple, so they embarked on what would become a year-long adventure. It was an idyllic life, working to restore the hotel to its former glory while exploring the island and its historic old ruins. Neither Genevieve or Paul recognized it at the time, but when a young girl showed up at the hotel one day, their jobs would be threatened and their relationship tested to the breaking point. The events of the tumultuous climax would change both of their lives forever.

"Hotel Paradise" is a marvelous short story that I enjoyed very much. Told as a flashback, it's a poignant story of a young couple living the lives they wanted until fate intervened in a dramatic way. It's one of the most engaging short stories that I've read in a long time.
