Revue de presse

Amused children will protest as Paul falls under Bernadette’s spell... Lamb’s delectable painting technique recalls that of confection-master Wayne Thiebaud; her backdrops resemble buttercream frosting in turquoise, sky blue, and lichen green, and she limns the fishes’ domain with impasto brushstrokes of white, yellow, and marine blue. Her sly approach to the way that love and friendship can alter one’s very view of life welcomes repeat visits.
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

The whimsical story is accompanied by striking oil paintings. The two fish are portrayed in fluid orange and gold brushstrokes, while the bowl is a luminous sphere reflecting different colors from page to page. One of the final spreads depicts a homey breakfast table holding all of the everyday objects bestowed with magical qualities through the eyes of the fanciful goldfish.
—School Library Journal (starred review)

In an exquisite sequence, we see the fish, Paul, going around and around in his glass bowl... Everything changes, however, when Bernadette arrives (charmingly, she "drops in"). ... Children ages 3-8 will love that Bernadette thinks a nearby green alarm clock is a cactus and that she mistakes an elegant teapot for a mother elephant. ... This richly painted debut works as a cheery fable for children but also as a tender metaphor for older readers—not in the confusion of teapots but in the way that opening our eyes to beauty can determine whether our days are dull or fresh and full of color.
—The Wall Street Journal

Présentation de l'éditeur

Visual humor sweetens an artful tale about a fish who suddenly sees everything a new way — thanks to a charismatic companion.

Paul is a fish who used to go around in circles. He made big circles and little circles. He circled from left to right and from right to left. He circled from top to bottom and from bottom to top. What else was there to do? Until one day Bernadette drops in and shows Paul that there is a whole world out there, right outside his bowl, with so many things to see. A banana-shaped boat! A blue elephant with a spoutlike trunk (be quiet when she’s feeding her babies)! A lovely lunetta butterfly, with tortoise-shell rims! Simple saturated paintings play off this charming ode to an active imagination — and the way that life changes when a bewitching creature opens your eyes.

Fish are still Fish 12 décembre 2014
Par Jason Kirkfield - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
Paul meets Bernadette, the 2013 debut from Parisian artist Rosy Lamb, provides a lovely modern bookend to Leo Lionni's classic Fish is Fish.

Goldfish Paul spends his life, not unhappily, swimming in circles. Then one day he gets a tank-mate: "One day, Bernadette dropped in." (Dropped out of a plastic bag from the pet store, no doubt.) Bernadette has seen much more of the world; her knowledge is vast yet suspect. Or perhaps she simply needs a pair of glasses (goggles?). Paul, however, is willing to accept her opinions along with her companionship.

Lots of touching and funny vignettes: teacups and eggs, respectively, plus the spoon of course. Don't miss the back cover, either! The oil paintings in this debut picture book are splendiferous. More than simply telling this story, they provide a wonderful introduction to art. Oil is such a tactile medium, and these paintings are reproduced in very high quality and look almost good enough to touch.

In addition to the aforementioned artwork, this is an excellent example of how friends need not be perfect. Perfect for your nursery bookshelf.

Charming Book! 7 juin 2014
Par Amy G. - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
Paul is a goldfish. He swims around his bowl all day, evidently not giving life much thought. Then Bernadette arrives and life becomes much more colorful! Bernadette introduces Paul to the wonders outside their bowl: a pair of glasses becomes a wonderful butterfly, a spoon is a fish, and food packages are a whole city (Milkwaukee, of course) in Bernadette's lively interpretations. This is a wonderful picture book for children, especially about ages 5+ who will "get" the humor, but younger ones will enjoy the simple story of friendship. It also would be a wonderful engagement, wedding, or anniversary gift!

Outside of Your World 5 février 2014
Par tvtv3 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
In PAUL MEETS BERNADETTE, Paul is a goldfish that swims around his bowl. Although his life might seem boring, he's content. One day, Bernadette, a female goldfish, appears and everything changes for Paul. She tries to open his eyes and show him (in a misinformed way) all the wonders of the world outside his fishbowl. There's a message in this book about being open to world outside of yourself, but also one about love and acceptance. Besides all that, there are some really fun illustrations that look like water-colored pictures. PAUL MEETS BERNADETTE is sure to be a book that delights parents and children alike.

Sweet Story and Makes the Kids Laugh! 21 août 2014

This book is completely adorable! I read it for a day of Ocean Camp that I hosted for my kids. I read it to preschoolers-2nd graders and all of them loved it! We all thought it was super sweet and funny. My 5-year-old has wanted to read it and illustrate it on her own paper again and again. Great Book!
