Présentation de l'éditeur

Driven by lost love, Neferure will discover a secret that threatens Egypt and the gods themselves.

Ramesses III, Egypt’s last great pharaoh, has saved the empire from countless incursions, but after many wars the kingdom is on the brink of bankruptcy. Labour strife, shifting allegiances, and now a deadly plague threaten to bring a close to Egypt’s Golden Age.

Amidst these troubles, a raging fire takes the life of the high priest of Karnak Temple. Neferure's love, Sahu, also dies in the flames, and she is convinced that their deaths were no accident. With the country divided, and none acknowledging the deaths as mysterious, Neferure alone hunts to uncover answers. What she will find is that a promise can defy death, and that a sinister plot threatens all of Egypt - one that reaches into the realm of the gods.

Per-Bast is a Purr-fectly splendid novel . . . a great read for everyone and especially for anyone who loves cats and ancient Egypt. The author masterfully blends history with myth and legend in this unique fictional, albeit realistically insightful, mystery tale of cats in ancient Egypt. Ms. Stiegler has a true story-telling gift which builds the reader's interest while stimulating the imagination. Her descriptive writing style breathes life into the text, creating visions of an ancient time and place which, like ancient hieroglyphics, brings them into the realm of eternal life through the written word . . . FIVE STARS

What stood out for me was her skillful way of capturing and rendering the mythic and magical elements that arise throughout the novel, which, for all the high fantasy, makes it real and palpable. I also love the quirky and thoughtful charm of her characters. The rich tapestry of personage and mythology drew me in from the start - a satisfying accomplishment for this unique book about the secret lives of cats in ancient Egypt. I want more! Sequel? Saga?

One of the most popular subjects for historical fiction novels is Ancient Egypt. This is probably because of the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx along with other monuments which still stand. Through hieroglyphs on the walls of tombs we have learned a lot about Egyptian mythology and what life was like in ancient times. Most historical novels look at life during this period from a human perspective but we know that Egyptians worshiped cats, so it would make sense to have a novel about Ancient Egypt from a cat’s point of view.

Per-Bast A Tale Of Cats In Ancient Egypt by Lara Dawn Stiegler is a a mystery set during the time of Ramesses III from 1100 to 1200BC. Egypt is in turmoil. A plague has been spread from rats to stray cats to to the house cats of Egypt and its only a matter of time before the humans get it. The Egyptian empire has survived many problems but after several years of war and a labor dispute this new plague might destroy Egypt’s golden age.

Things look grim and get even worse when the High Priest of Karnak Temple dies in a fire along with his cat Sahu. A palace cat named Neferure is convinced that the death was no accident. No one believes Neferure’s theory so she searches for answers on her own. What she finds isn’t just a conspiracy against the Egyptian empire but a plot against the gods themselves. Can one cat stop the fall of Egypt?

This story was different from any other story I’ve read. Per-Bast has a good mix of humor, drama and mystery. I liked how the cats are portrayed as being as smart as humans, they can hear and understand people but they can’t communicate with them with the exception of the Pharaoh. I also liked how the cats on a social level we’re similar to humans with the house cats looking down on the stray cats, all of them having different personalities and believing in the same gods as the humans.

My favorite parts of this book was the relationship between Neferure and Sahu, even when one has passed, the other shows a great amount of loyalty. I also loved the stories of the gods that the cats share such as Ra passing through the underworld along with the story of Ahmes’s lineage. While there is a lot of seriousness to this book there are funny parts such as hearing a depressed crocodile complain that he can’t get a meal, a cat that tries to please his human by giving him a dead mouse and a hippo who can’t be moved.

One thing that I need to mention about this book is that if you think that a mystery set in ancient Egypt from a cat’s viewpoint might be corny, you are mistaken. This book is well researched giving detailed descriptions of temples, a history of families in Egypt and it does a good job telling the stories of the gods that the Egyptians believed in. If you want to learn more about ancient Egypt history and their mythology, this book presents it in an entertaining way. Per-Bast A Tale Of Cats In Ancient Egypt is good storytelling presenting history in a way that it hasn’t been looked at before and its a tale that readers of all ages can enjoy.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A cat-chy experience in the world of ancient Egypt 10 juillet 2014

A fun read that you learn from. Per Bast is like a history lesson in Ancient Egyptian Mythology, but done in a way that makes it fun and enjoyable. To follow the story from the cats perspective was such a unique approach, that it made the story much more entertaining. Of course the cats take on very human qualities, and the frailties and insecurities that we also carry. In truth, I've never seen my cats exhibit much in the way of insecurity because they are always positive they are infallible, so that was a nice change of pace. Yet the story was more than just recounting the myths and legends on which the people of ancient Egypt based their lives, it also was a mystery and a bit of a thriller. The tension was kept high throughout, so that the reader could hardly help but root for the hero cats.

If I had any problem with the story, was there were an abundance of confusing, often un-pronouncable names, that made the reader need to go back to make sure they understood the good guys from the bad guys. Yet, for me, realizing that the people of that ancient time really built their lives around these myths and gods, it was a great reading experience. It offers a chance to understand the perception of the period, only this time, it came from the four legged variety, adding a bit of poignancy to the story. An enjoyable read from an angle.

NOTE: The Kindle Book Review received a free copy of this book for an independent, fair, and honest review. We are not associated with the author or Amazon.

As someone who loves historical fiction about ancient Egypt, I was quickly and easily drawn in, but this is Egyptian high fantasy, a little something different. It is a mythological tale, full of gods and monsters. I have to admit that I initially judged this book by its concept, because: cats. Talking cats. It did not sound promising. However, the strength of the prose and the solidity of the setting won me over. Besides, if you have ever known a “supervisor cat,” the kind of cat who watches everything you do, it is not hard to believe they are well up on human and divine affairs. I was also interested in the use of the actual drama between Ramesses III and Queen Tiye – a true story that did not end well. In sum, I recommend this book as a real departure from the run of ancient Egyptian novels.
