Présentation de l'éditeur

Drawing on his own experiences of working as a vet, Malcolm Welshman brings to life a wealth of colourful characters -- including the formidable practice receptionist, Beryl, with her one steely eye -- and an ark's worth of marvellous animals. As enchanting as it is funny, this wonderful story will delight any animal fan. When Paul Mitchell arrives for his first day's work at Prospect House Veterinary Hospital, he never expects this...Oh his very first day, he is bitten by a feisty hamster...but this is a mere prelude to a cavalcade of hilarious -- and often painful -- encounters with fish, flesh and fowl. From stalking a feral cat to rescuing a cow stuck in a gravel pit, life is never short of animal adventures for the newly qualified vet. On top of treating all manner of creatures at the practice, Paul and his girlfriend Lucy, also nurse a host of waifs and strays back to health at their home. Besides six budgerigars, two love birds, a hoard of guinea pigs and three tabby cats, their menagerie includes Gertie the Goose, whose talent for house security saves her from the Christmas Day table, and Nelson, their lovable -- and stone deaf -- Jack Russell.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 So Far, I love it! 2 septembre 2012

I'm giving this book 5 stars because I love it. I'm about half-way through and am in no hurry to get to the last page -- but I did not want to wait to share my feelings about the book. I do not know the author nor am I being paid in any way for writing this review. Amazon says that 5 stars means you love it and I do, thus the rating.

I loved all the Herriot Books and watched the All Creatures series several times. I also considered becoming a vet myself at one point. Some of my favorite people have been vets, including an old-time country vet who cared for my pets for many years and spent an impassioned hour one afternoon discussing the pros and cons of going through vet school.

So I couldn't resist this title and decided to give it a try. The author is very funny, and his descriptions are vivid, conjuring up images such as Julie Andrews singing, the wall-eyed receptionist with bottle-black, brilliantined hair and scores of other perceptive little observations and descriptions which he shares with his reader. I sat up way past my scheduled time for sleep enjoying the world and images Welshman was creating with his words. Seeing the vet hospital for the first time was fabulous, with a few brushstrokes he had the neglected garden visualized in my head and the staff vividly portrayed, their interrelationships and personal foibles sussed and real.

This work is not a modern day recreation of All Creatures, and it's not a novel. Like Herriot's series, it's a memoir of a young vet's first experiences in his profession. The time has changed as Herriot's work begins in the late 40s or 50 and Welshman's in 2004, but the protagonist in each is sharing their adventures and misadventures, their work partners and patients, all seen through the idealistic view of youth.

It's well worth taking a chance on and it's free right now. I'm enjoying each minute and look forward to his subsequent books.

I usually love animal and vet tales. Pets in a Pickle was an exception. It had great potential to be an entertaining yarn. Sadly it fell short of the mark. It was not very funny, the descriptions of his relationship woes were fatuous, (and hardly helpful for a floundering romance). The whole book could have been condensed into a witty little short story. Waste of money.

Great anecdotes, love the style of writing, very much like James Herriot. Can't wait to get stuck into his next book.

When this book was offered, as a freebie for my e-reader, the advertising teasers suggested that it reflected the warmth of Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small with the humor of Mark Twain. Perhaps it was the distinct British "flavor" with which this novel was written (Mr. Welshman IS British) that helped me to miss the subtleties of the genre and to miss out on the promised humor. Alas, not all gifts are worth their cost.
When Mr. Paul Mitchell, recent graduate in Veterinary Surgery, arrives for a job interview at a well-known Veterinary Hospital, he is offered the job as gardener. It seems his appearance lead his perspective boss to assume shoveling "manure" was more his talent than caring for hurting animals. There are points in the next eight months, which is the duration of time the book covers, where he ponders if that would not have been the better choice. The reader is given the tour of his early career as he cares for animals suitable for an exotic zoo - guinea pigs, aged dogs, kittens, cows, horses, parrots, geese, snakes - all while he manages to develop a relationship with one of the Veterinary nurses who works in the same hospital.
If the reader likes animals, a rather chaotic pace with romantic undertones, this book would be an excellent choice. I found the chapters to be more loosely connected stories more than a coherent novel but would be better suited as collection of short stories. The characters were flat, never being allowed to breathe or develop beyond the initial impression the reader is given of them. While some of the predicaments in which the young Mr. Mitchell finds himself could have been humorous, the set-up for their plausible occurrence was over-contrived, improbable or sought humor in creating a "hostile work environment."
I suspect this book is the first of a series. If so, I wish Mr. Welshman all the luck in its success. However, there was not enough in this first volume to encourage me to seek to learn of the further exploits of Mr. Paul Mitchell, Veterinary Surgeon.

Really enjoyed this book. Was glad to find a book with animals that wasn't a tear jerker. This was funny and left me feeling good
