This exhibition catalog reproduces 104 drawings selected from one of the most important drawings collections in the world in full size whenever possible and in color. Ranging from the Italian Renaissance through the Dutch and Flemish Baroque to the 19th-century French masters, the works here are superbly reproduced, making this volume difficult to set aside. Following an introduction describing the history of the museum, each drawing is presented with physical description, provenance, exhibitions, bibliography, comparative illustrations, and a text that discusses the artist's technique, subject matter, history of the work, problems of attribution, and other points of interest. Some of the drawings are previously unexhibited or unpublished. This is for both general readers and scholars; an important addition for all art collections.

The Boymans-van Beuningen Museum of Rotterdam contains some of the most important drawings by Old Masters of Dutch, Flemish, Italian, English, French and Spanish schools from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries. This catalogue includes drawings which are part of an exhibition traveling from The Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City, May 15-August 5, 1990; to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, August 18-October 21, 1990; and to the Cleveland Museum of Art, November 13, 1990-January 13, 1991. The drawings range from very early German and Italian artists such as Pisanello and Gozzoli to early Netherlandish artists such as Schonganer, Altdorfer, the van Eyck School, Hieronymus Bosch, to nineteenth century French artists such as Ingres, Manet, Degas and Cézanne. Other distinguished artists represented are DÜrer, Rembrandt, Rubens and Watteau. The catalogue entries contain extensive and up-to-date literature on the drawings as well as information on provenance and technique. Discussion on matters of attribution and information is given in the footnotes and not in the running text, leaving the entries to be read as small essays on the drawings. All the 104 drawings are reproduced full-page in color. Also included are 220 comparative illustrations in black and white of similar drawings by the same artist, or other related works of art.
