We never really find out why Stewart decided to walk across Afghanistan only a few months after the Taliban were deposed, but what emerges from the last leg of his two-year journey across Asia is a lesson in good travel writing. By turns harrowing and meditative, Stewart's trek through Afghanistan in the footsteps of the 15th-century emperor Babur is edifying at every step, grounded by his knowledge of local history, politics and dialects. His prose is lean and unsentimental: whether pushing through chest-high snow in the mountains of Hazarajat or through villages still under de facto Taliban control, his descriptions offer a cool assessment of a landscape and a people eviscerated by war, forgotten by time and isolated by geography. The well-oiled apparatus of his writing mimics a dispassionate camera shutter in its precision. But if we are to accompany someone on such a highly personal quest, we want to know who that person is. Unfortunately, Stewart shares little emotional background; the writer's identity is discerned best by inference. Sometimes we get the sense he cares more for preserving history than for the people who live in it (and for whom historical knowledge would be luxury). But remembering Geraldo Rivera's gunslinging escapades, perhaps we could use less sap and more clarity about this troubled and fascinating country.(May)

In 2002, in the midst of war and a typically harsh winter, Rory Stewart embarked on the seemingly insane undertaking of walking across Afghanistan. That it was madness was explained to the accomplished Scots journalist, but he was not to be dissuaded, especially since the journey was part of the larger scheme that he had already accomplished: to traverse the Muslim world on foot by way of Iran, Pakistan, India, and Nepal. Thankfully, he lived, and nearly as marvelous a reason for celebration is the book that resulted, a glowing achievement in the rich history of travel writing. Stewart's narration of his own work further reveals a traveler of deep insight and humility (without a trace of sentimentality), and a man of rare courage and grace. Superbe aventure dans un pays si méconnu,

Le texte est très bien écrit, donc agréable à lire, l'histoire est belle et donne un vrai aperçu des peuples vivant en Afghanistan, tout en mêlant une pointe d'histoire. Un très beau livre pour ceux aimant les voyages

She nearly twice my age and twice my size." Over the years there has been as expansion of Caribbean authors, and we hope to see more of their work published. Melanie Springer was new to me but her novel has so impressed me and kept me on the edge of my seat as I waited to see what was happening next. A colourful portrait of our island Barbados in the summertime at one of the busiest seasons of the year, and that is obviously, The Crop Over Festival. Melanie in a class of her own and in novel Pearl, you will see as she entertains you with great humour, heart-beating suspense and at times an overwhelming of sadness for some of the characters dear and not-so-dear characters. As in most West Indian societies the young boys in their teen like to tease the older girls as they are growing up and allowed to wear more sophisticated clothes if you want to call it that or special attire in the form of what is new on the market. Pearl became a victim after being laughed at by her brother and his friends and anything she did. They were always making fun of her but she had the upper hand on them, and she let them know that she was going to report their bad behaviour to their elders. Frightened the boys Omar, Chicken and Jeffery got jittery and started making some plans to work some 'obeah' or witchcraft on her. It is long before Pearl one day is found in her bed by Omar, but she does not budge. While the festivities of Bridgetown Market, Party Monarch at Cattlewash Cohoblopot and even Kadooment are in full swing Pearl is still in that bed in the same position. I do not want to spoil the story for you by saying much more, but I guarantee you won't be disappointed as you read on to the last page.
