My first meeting with Duffy and it won't be my last! 7 avril 2010

I love Konrath and am working my way through his books -- and now I am adding Schreck to my favorite author list.

This collection of short stories are entertaining and remind me of Chinese food -- fills you up for now, but you end up hungry again in a few hours to read more by these talented authors. Both Daniels and Dombrowski are tough and flawed, but with hearts that do care to make their world right. The cast of characters around them are fun and seem to remind me of people I know.

The only complaint I have is regarding the formatting -- I wish this book had an active TOC; one I could click forward to the next story vs having to page forward (or back). I had previously read several of the short stories in another collection and wished there was an easy way to skip over them.

Highly recommend! :)

If you know these authors, then you know what your getting into. If you don't know them, well go ahead and give them a try. You'll be hooked. Its just a fun book to read. Both the authors are very solid in their profession and you will be happy. Its a quick read with great characters from different story lines.

Much More Than Finger Food 9 avril 2009

To quote George Costanza, "Worlds are colliding!"
To quote Groucho Marx, "...and what a collision!"

Schreck's 'Fearsome Foursome' is in the rarest of forms, the humor throughout is in the vein of previous works and better than ever ...and the action is fast, welcomed and exciting thanks to the switch between Jack's and Duffy's points-of-view from scene to scene.
A great effort and a joy to peek into what must have been a joyful process of collaboration.
What's a Bulger? 18 juin 2012

When I began this story, my first reaction was, "What's a Bulger? Some type of wheat? A new, hip description of a fat person's belly that I'm unfamiliar with? Then they said "Ray Bulger," so I realized it was someone's name, someone in "The Wizard of Oz." Oh, Ray Bolger! Okay, I know it's only off by one letter, which is easy to do in any writing, but Guys, you should have looked it up on Wikipedia. It's distracting.
Enough nitpicking, and on to the story. It's not supposed to be a classic novel, and it's written for a specific, targeted audience. Fourteen year old boys, I believe, just like action-adventure movies. So I shouldn't have been reading it in the first place, since I'm neither 14 nor a boy. However, I had read so much hype about the authors making millions selling ebooks on Amazon, I wanted to see what all the noise was about. It's a throw-away style, frequently emulated, rarely done in an interesting or readable way. I did find this one readable and more amusing than I expected. Would make a good read while riding the commuter train. However, if you're craving a short story that's a little more sophisticated, try Stranger Than Fiction-An Urban Tale.
The best part about it, and I believe the key to the authors' success, was the Q&A session at the end. I could have read the witty, buddy-movie, cross-banter all day. Laughed out loud a couple of times. Made me wish I was friends with those guys and was meeting them at the local pub after work. My solution. Give them a talk show. Me and every 14-year-old boy on Earth would watch it.
Duffy and Al Stole my Heart 28 mars 2014

This is a short read, but I really enjoyed it. I loved how different characters from different series were put together in this short story. I now want to read the Jack Daniels mysteries and I would love to see these two author's getting back together for more Duffy/Al/Jack adventures. I'm hooked. Even though I had never read either author, after reading this, they will both be on my "to read" list. The relationship between Duffy and his basset hound Al is wonderful. Being a dog lover myself, I can empathize with the devotion.
I just started the first Duffy/Al book in the series, and am looking forward to more from this great duo, as well as getting into the Jack Daniels books.
