Amazing. 15 juillet 2007

I also have his first book. He is an amazing guitar player. The CD is also nice to just listen to. This book will provide plenty of hours of practice to keep you busy. You definitely get your bang for the buck as there are also plenty of songs. The tabs show you which fingers to use and the DVD is really helpful. I highly recommend this, if it were lost or stolen I would buy another.

technically challenging, authentic sounding pieces 25 janvier 2010
Par Loren Woirhaye - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Couverture à spirales Achat vérifié
Having spent over a year working (hard) at this
book and learning to adequately play most of
the pieces in it I can say for sure that it's
just excellent.

The author studied with Paco De Lucia.

The style of flamenco here is influenced by Paco's innovations,
but it's in touch with the old stuff too. Not the most
modern style played by brash young players looking to
innovate, but still the stuff you've probably dreamed
of being able to play.

The DVD doesn't explain techniques but if you watch
carefully you'll pick up some subtleties.

I did not buy or review the first book of solos. I'm far
from a beginner and I wanted challenging material.

Juan Martin has been a little maligned, unfairly, for teaching
and speaking English so well, as if that makes a player
less authentic or expert. He's a very fine guitarist
who approaches flamenco with authenticity, variety and
grace.

The inclusion of not-so-difficult Sevillas falsettas
in grade 8 seems out of place to me. I would put them
in grade 6 or 7 but Martin already put some Sevillanas
in 6... so grade 8 is a little padded-out in my opinion.
The rest of the grade 8 stuff is quite challenging
material. There's a rumba flamenca piece in grade
8 as well, with the author doing his best to bring
complexity and a nuanced, melancholic "aire" to a
form which, for many afficianados of the older flamenco
forms, is cliched and hard to take seriously.

For "toque libre" there is a granadinas, a tarantas,
and a rondena. All are original Martin compositions.

Learn the stuff in this book well and you can play professionally
and people will rave about you.

The package includes a CD which is good listening. There
is a somewhat annoying "binging" metronome on one Bulerias
track. It is a teaching CD after all, but each piece
is played with a beginning, middle and end so it doesn't
get tiresome like some method CDs. A good choice to do it
this way.

The DVD is mostly the author just playing every piece.
You can observe fingerings and right hand technique and
connect it with what you've heard on the CD.

For the price this is a perfect resource for where I'm at
in playing Flamenco - proficient in all techniques and
moving towards building a professional-level repertoire.

There are other methods out there at the same level but
you'd be hard-pressed to find a CD, a DVD and complete
transcriptions of this level of material at this price.

Juan Martin's flamenco guitar method 17 juillet 2006
Par Alan Bennett - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Couverture à spirales Achat vérifié
I'd already purchased Juan Martin's Flamenco tutor volume 1, and was thoroughly delighted by it : it is well-graded, with a logical progression, the music is great and Juan's smiling explanations and remarks are crystal-clear. I could not wish for a better introduction to playing flamenco guitar, and I have recommended it to all my classical guitar students.

The second volume is a logical continuation of the first. I've yet to get to work at it, but after scanning through it rapidly, I am convinced it will yield hours of enjoyment (and hard work) to enthusiastic players. And as always, Juan's sensitive and brillant playing really wants you to get at it !

Great book for getting into flamenco 17 décembre 2013

They are really impressive compositions and the standard music notation includes position markings. So you don't have to look at the tab if you don't want to.

The CD has almost all the compositions on it (there are two or three not included). And, they are presented in order of ascending difficulty: grades 6 through to 8. That might not mean anything to you. So, grade 6 is the beginning of the professional performance pieces and grade 8 is getting right up there. There are two grades above grade 8. And once you reach them you can play everything. Grade 6 to 7 is what is usually required to get into the better university music programs. So these pieces are hard.

You might want to try the other book first if you are not a good player. This is his second book of solo flamenco guitar tunes.
