Présentation de l'éditeur

Now in its fourth edition, Politics of Latin America explores both the evolution and the current state of the political scene in Latin America. Distinguishing itself from more traditional works on the subject, this unique text demonstrates a nuanced sensitivity to the use and abuse of power and the importance of social conditions, gender, race, globalization, and political economy throughout Latin America. The first part of the text is composed of thematic chapters that outline the region's geographic setting, history, economics, society, gender, race, and religion, setting the stage for a more detailed analysis of the politics, democratization, political culture, political movements, and revolution in Latin America. The second part of the book consists of carefully constructed case studies of ten representative Latin American nations: Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua, and Bolivia. Each case study traces the historical and political development of key actors and institutions, analyzing contemporary power configurations. FEATURES OF THE FOURTH EDITION: * Focuses on contemporary developments in the region, especially the election and reelection (from 2002 on) of several progressive governments that provide an alternative to the neoliberal policies of the 1990s * Incorporates recent political events (from 2007-2010), including the presidential and legislative elections in Brazil, Venezuela, Uruguay, El Salvador, and Paraguay * Analyzes critical new legislative developments, including the legalization of gay marriage in Argentina in 2010 * Updates all tables and charts with the latest census and economic data * Includes an entirely new chapter (11) on the relationship between the United States and Latin America, which offers an in-depth look at Obama's policies toward the region and places his administration in the context of long-standing themes in this complex relationship * Restructures, expands, and adds statistical tables to the chapter on democracy and authoritarianism --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Broché .

Essential Reading 7 octobre 2002
Par Bert Ruiz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I can think of no other text that explains politics in Latin America better. The authors provide an outstanding review of history, culture, religion and revolution in Latin America. Moreover, the research of Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Argentina, Chile and Brazil by assorted scholars in part two of the text is excellent. Anyone who wants a deeper understanding of Latin America must read this book.

Comprehensive 17 janvier 2011

Each chapter is comprehensive and delivers in providing a background, profile, and analysis of politics in selected countries. Unlike another reviewer, I did not see a particularly leftist bias. If anyone is interested in reading truly leftist material filled with criticisms of developed countries and international institutions, I recommend using a research database or even google using key terms like "neocolonialism" and "Dependency theory" in conjunction with "Latin America". Or pick up the latest copy of Annual Editions' "Developing World". There's a difference between discussing facts and applying interpretations to the facts, and this book does more of the former than the latter. It is dry and oftentimes repetitive, but it's also comprehensive and informative.

This book tends to be very repetitive, and student's rarely enjoy it. I like it but after a few chapters you keep reading the same thing. I may change the text next semester. For being biased as the other reviewer mentions, yes, is biased in the sense that shows exactly what US has done in the region, especially their infamous interventions, support to counter-insurgency groups, dictatorships and other things that most americans would not like to hear. We as south americans know this by experience, we lived it, now north americans can read about it.

I have this book for a political science course, so I didn't hunt it down for pleasure reading. The author does a decent job of summarizing the history and politics of Latin America, but some statements in the book seem a bit odd to me. For example, in a sub header titled Contemporary Struggle of the Indigenous People, it states (partial sentence here) ;bilingualism has increased without the disappearance of native languages. REALLY? They may want to revise that statement.

Great price and Great service. So interesting, I read some of it myself. Appears to give a great overview of Latin American Politics.
