Présentation de l'éditeur

Position Pieces for Cello, Book 2 fills the pedagogical gap between the first book of Position Pieces and the two Thumb Position for Cello books in that it covers the fifth, sixth, and seventh positions. Position Pieces for Cello, Book 2 systematically introduces ways to find the correct location of each position and also to understand the various finger patterns required. As with Mr. Mooney's other books, this is accomplished in an enjoyable and creative manner through the use of cello duets. With titles like "Surfing Cellos," "Jumping Flea," and "The Happy Certified Public Accountant," these pieces are really fun for students to play! This book will prove to be an indispensable tool for intermediate level cello students.

I'm an adult learning the cello. This is an introduction to the Tenor Clef and includes positions through 7. I was able to work through this on my own. (with an occasional session with a friend cellist) It took me about a year, but I feel fairly competent playing in the Tenor Clef and some of the upper positions.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 1) you must know tenor clef already & 2) the photos are worthless 5 mars 2010

This book, which introduces the 5th, 6th, and 7th positions, assumes that the cellist already knows tenor clef. As long as you are aware of that, no problem. I was hoping that this book would help me learn tenor clef since that's where these positions are played. It seemed to me that they go hand in hand. Why would you know how to read tenor clef already if you didn't know the positions to play it? Just like why would you study the positions if you didn't know tenor clef (which, ah ha, the author must agree with since that's how he wrote the book.) They go together, for crying out loud, so teach them together already!

The other disappointment is the photographs. Again, I was hoping to learn where to put my hand / fingers. The background of every single photo, by which I mean anything and everything other than the person's fingers, is completely black. You have no idea where on the cello neck the person's hand / fingers are located. I am completely dumbfounded by this as the photos, which presumably someone thought were necessary, are completely worthless. Just imagine your hand in some position, floating in space, and that is every photograph. Could be first position for all I know.

Lastly, and this is minor but still annoying, there are quizzes which ask which finger is on which note, which note is played by which finger, etc. BUT NO ANSWERS ARE GIVEN!!! I assume the questions are not meant to be rhetorical, but at this point, who knows.

Bottomline: if you know tenor clef, and if you know where the fingers go, this book is probably good practice for you. If you want to learn these things, look elsewhere.

Essential book to learn intermediate level Cello technique. Includes several dozen pieces to elucidate play in each position, some of the pieces are very memorable, some are tricky to play, all are great etudes.

There are tons of duets that systematically teach the higher positions up to thumb. There's plenty of mixing of positions but with emphasis on a particular position/finger pattern. There are enough songs in each position that a student can skip ones they find uninteresting and still have enough to learn what needs learning.

These positions aren't all that common, and it's rather tedious going through each finger pattern. Maybe consider skipping right to Fun in Thumb when a student finishes book 1 instead of giving them book 2.

Rick Mooney has published several great instructional books for cello, and this one is no exception.
This book teaches 5th through 7th position in an intuitive and non-boring manner. The exercises build upon each other, and are well thought-out.

My cello teacher also loves this book.

I would recommend this book to any low-intermediate cello player who is looking to move beyond 4th position.
