Présentation de l'éditeur

Brandon McKinney has scraped and sacrificed for what little in life he’s ever had. Though it’s been fifteen years since he escaped his father’s abuse, the damage remains. Trust seems as far out of reach as his dream of becoming an architect, and though he’s come to accept being gay, he can’t deny the shame and confusion he feels at other urges—the deeply-repressed desire to submit.

Jonathan Watkins is a self-made Silicon Valley billionaire whose ex-wife took half his money and even more of his faith. Comfortable as a Dominant but wary of being hurt again, he resorts to anonymous pickups and occasional six-month contracts with subs seeking only a master, not a lover.

When a sizzling back-alley encounter cues Jonathan in to Brandon’s deep-seated submissive side, he makes the man an offer: Give me six months of your life, and I’ll open your eyes to a whole new world. Brandon doesn’t care about that; all he wants is the three million dollars Jonathan’s offering so he can buy the construction company he works for. But he soon learns that six months on his knees is no easy feat, and shame and pride may keep him from all he ever wanted—and all he never dreamed he had any right to have.

(Publisher's note: This title contains heavy BDSM play. While consent is clearly established and frequently reaffirmed, some moments in Power Play push hard against the outer edges of consent.)

Biographie de l'auteur

Rachel is an M/M erotic romance author, a freelance writer and editor, and the Managing Editor of Riptide Publishing. She's also a sadist with a pesky conscience, shamelessly silly, and quite proudly pervish. Fortunately, all those things make writing a lot more fun for her . . . if not so much for her characters. When she's not writing about hot guys getting it on (or just plain getting it; her characters rarely escape a story unscathed), she loves to read, hike, camp, sing, perform in community theater, and glue captions to cats. She also has a particular fondness for her very needy dog, her even needier cat, and shouting at kids to get off her lawn. You can find Rachel at www.rachelhaimowitz.com and tweeting as @rachelhaimowitz. EPIC Award-winning author Cat Grant lives by the sea in beautiful Monterey, California, with one persnickety feline and entirely too many books and DVDs. When she's not writing, she sings along (badly!) to whatever's on her iPod shuffle, watches lots of movies, and fantasizes about kinky sex with Michael Fassbender. 4.0 étoiles sur 5 Very Intense & Not For the Weak of Heart 9 avril 2012
Par J. Faltys - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
This was an incredibly intense read both mentally and physically and I'm literally exhausted after reading it. As a reader of a few books based in the world of BDSM I thought I knew what to expect, but this book completely caught me off guard. The scenes were of a level I never read before and won't be something I soon forget. And with this being the first book in the Power Play series this experience isn't over yet.

Jonathon and Brandon's relationships starts off innocently enough with a drink at a bar where Brandon clearly seems to be the one in control, but things soon change completely and Brandon's forced into a subservient role to Jonathon to get what he needs to take over the company he works for. Their time together doesn't go as either planned due to neither of them being truly honest with each other and it's only at the end of the story where there's finally hope for the two of them to have a mutually satisfying relationship with each other.

Even after reading this story I still don't understand the desire of participating in a BDSM lifestyle, especially for someone like Brandon who was mentally and physically abused by his father. To put himself in a similar situation will either end up being a mistake or being very therapeutic for him. Jonathon too was a conundrum that I don't have any better understanding of from when I first started reading. He seemed caring one moment then cold the next and I'm hoping that the next installment will dig deeper into his psyche now that these two have come to a better understanding.

This is definitely not a book for the weak of heart. Having an open mind is a necessity to immerse yourself in the world presented here, an intensely emotional world nicely balanced with the physical aspects. It's an intriguing and thought provoking story that has me wanting to come back for more and hopefully gain more insight into this lifestyle.

As reviewed on Kinky Book Reviews
BDSM has two mantras, if you will, Safe, Sane and Consensual, and RACK (Risk Aware Consensual Kink). I will be honest and say that, for me, this book pushed both of those as far as possible, but luckily never broke them. Is that a good or bad thing? I'm still trying to decide. The story's premise, in my opinion, sounds awesome. An experienced Dom, a billionaire to boot, taking an inexperienced, unknown sub and showing him the options available to him.

While reading this book, I laughed, cried, bounced for joy, squirmed in excitement, panted with arousal, cringed in pain and fear, yelled at both characters, and even had to walk away several times, and I would do it all again. This book is not for the faint of heart. Jonathan doesn't lie when he says he's a sadist. There is pain. There is torture. There is even a couple of times where the safeword is used and dismissed as being invalid so the scene continued on, which is a major no-no for me. However, the book is realistic. Jonathan isn't one of those amazingly all knowing Dom's you see in a lot of erotic romance. He is realistic. He makes mistakes, but he tries very hard to do what is needed.

I did wish for a bit more of Jonathan's POV interspersed throughout the story. For a good part of the book, the glimpses into his emotions were the only things that kept me from washing my hands of it entirely. I fell in love with both of these characters from the very beginning of the book. But when things got rough, I had to keep reminding myself of why he was doing things and of his side of things, or hoping for one of the well timed switches to Jonathans POV, or I would have easily hated him. Often, I questioned whether or not, if he knew certain things that the reader knew, if it would make any difference or if he just wouldn't care. That's not a question I like having for a Dom I'm reading about. I loved Bran just as much as I loved Jonathan... even when he was being an ass, because I could understood WHY he was being an ass. I connected with him much easier than I did with Jonathan. Hmm, wonder why that is.. :)

With all of the things above, some of you are possibly asking why I rated this book a 4.5? I can only explain it this way. At one point, when I hit a hard spot for me to read and was ranting a bit, a friend asked why I was still reading the book if it upset me so much. The only response I could give was that I cared about the characters. I had to know what happened. Cat and Rachel wrote such wonderful characters that I fell in love with so early on that even when things got messy, I was still involved. Sometimes the good or bad of a book isn't in how happy and sweet the book makes you, but in how intensely it pulls your emotions, good or bad. This book sucked my emotions in and wouldn't let them go... and as I said above, I'd do it all again.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 very intense, emotionally & physcially exhausting read 25 avril 2012

4.5 stars.

Power Play: Resistance by Rachel Haimowitz and Cat Grant is a very intense, emotionally and physically exhausting read that breaks all the rules in BDSM. With heavy sadism and sometimes barely consensual sex, it is not for the sexually faint of heart. It is a powerful novel that is so strongly compelling and riveting that it is impossible to put down.

Bran McKinney is tough, macho and very much in control of himself and his life. He is a self-made man who has put his painful abusive past behind him. He is actively pursuing his goal of owning his own business but he is frustrated by his inability to secure a business loan. Bran leads a solitary life and his sexual encounters are brief with no emotional ties.

Jonathan Watkins is a charming billionaire who denies himself nothing. He is a Dom and sadist that avoids relationships by engaging in emotionless hookups and the occasional contract with submissives. He is so confident in his perception that Bran is submissive, Jonathan offers him a deal that Bran finds impossible to refuse. Bran will receive three million dollars if he will become Jonathan's sub for six months.

Their D/s relationship is an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions. Bran has NO idea what is he agreeing to, and Jonathan fails miserably in giving Bran the guidance he needs. Jonathan is determined to break Bran and he will stop at nothing in his attempt to strip him of his pride and inherent strong will. While there are some aspects of submission that appeal to Bran, he is not a true submissive and Jonathan is unable (or unwilling) to accept this very important distinction.

The struggle between Jonathan and Bran is raw and gritty. The punishments that Jonathan metes out are harsh and quite sadistic and so incredibly painful it is sometimes difficult to continue reading. But it is impossible not to want to know where Ms. Haimowitz and Ms. Grant are going to take Bran and Jonathan next. Will Jonathan break Bran's spirit? Will Bran concede power and control? Is there any possible way to salvage the fragile relationship the two men shared before entering into their contract?

Power Play: Resistance by Rachel Haimowitz and Cat Grant is a commanding novel that will stretch your boundaries as much as it does Bran's and to some extent, Jonathan's. Their D/s relationship is not all bad; both men gain valuable insight and information about themselves from their experiences. They both grow as individuals and as partners. While I would not classify this as a romance, there are some romantic elements to their relationship. The ending is the perfect beginning for Power Play: Awakening the next installment of this provocative yet extraordinary series.

Spoilers in this review

I read this from beginning to end, so that's an automatic 3 stars from me, but I was really angry with Jonathan the entire time. I thought he was a really bad dom, and he took a difficult situation and made it much much worse. It was disingenuous in the extreme to say that Brandon was willing, and not factor in the money. That Jonathan set up the relationship with such weird parameters shows how he has intimacy issues. He never looked to what bothered Bran, he just wanted him to bend to his own needs, no consideration of the subs needs. I feel myself rambling but I was so enraged about that. He actually felt sorry for himself and he was using a stun gun on that poor man!! He was awful to Brandon and no experienced sub would have put up with it. I didn't like him and though he had a flash of insight at the end, it wasn't enough to satisfy me. So while I was engaged the entire time I read, it was mainly to shout at Jonathan (in the same way one shouts at the TV...) about all the terrible choices he was making.

This book grabbed me from the beginning and I had a hard time putting it down. It was very intense and graphic at times, and the road these two characters took was definitely not an easy one, but it was a hot, well-developed story about the rougher side of BDSM. I really liked the way these authors made Jonathon & Brandon so human; many BDSM stories have larger-than-life characters who are so "perfect" that they don't seem real--Nobody can accurately read another person's needs and desires all the time, and everybody makes mistakes. I'm hoping for a sequel- I would definitely like see further development of the relationship between these characters.
